DPMS owners: a 308 hog rig

Wondering if anyone here might be willing to shed some light on narrowing down the vast array of DPMS 308 options for me.  This will be a hog hunting specific rifle for my dad.  I've only fired a couple of 16" 308's.  Sig 716 and a PWS and factory out of the box I was shocked how well I could stay down on the target and re-acquire for quick follow up shots.  I can only imagine what they might have been like with a brake of some kind.  99% of the game will be from say 75-125 yards at most.

Would love to hear what DPMS owners like/dislike and which direction you might push me.  Chances are great this will be set up with a reflex sight/no mag it's just not necessary at his distances he shoots irons as it is right now and is happy as a clam kills a lot of pigs.  I think my primary goal would be to get a setup that is reasonably tame so he can get on follow up shots quickly it's not uncommon for them to come in groups of up to 10 where he is so hammer down repeating is desirable.  Maybe they all behave that way with a brake?  Do I need to consider one?

Thanks for any thoughts and Happy Thanksgiving

I own a DPMS Oracle 16". I like the Oracle as it has the 16" HBAR barrel and is blowing my mind how accurate it is. I have had no malfunctions of any kind (run it wet). I mounted a 1.5-4.5 X 32 Bushnell Banner on it and it's compact, easy to swing and fast to get back on target. A muzzle brake would make it even faster, I don't find it obnoxious at all to shoot. Who am I kidding, it's a damn BLAST to shoot! I swapped out the DPMS stock and grip for the Hogue set and prefer it WAY over the stock stuff. A new single stage trigger is next on my list. I feel real comfortable saying mine covers every thing from home defense to hunting out to 600 yards. My 870 shotgun (home defense), 30-30 Winchester (brush gun) and a .300Win Mag (reach out and touch ya rifle), don't see the light of day anymore. All in all, I'm very happy with it and was a damn deal at $659 SHIPPED!

Good gravy that is a price!

Is this what you have?

If you don't mind letting me know where you purchased it from either that would be great.  That is an insane price!

Yup that's what I own. I bought it from a dealer in Utah. He had 10 of them on sale right before Christmas last year.

Recent photo of my "little" rifle. You'll think I'm crazy, but I like the glacier guard. :laffs:

That's low for a 308 like just above introduction price.........

Edit

also remember thats MSRP, they're all going to be higher on the manufactures website. Like bean said they can be found lower

If your thinking of a 16" barrel for this , your on the right track , 16" , Rifle length Gas system , muzzle break & I believe a Rifle stock would work for less felt recoil , the Magpul MOE rifle stock is a winner & very comfortable , but nothing wrong with their Collapsible products , just depends on fitment .

 Buying or building ?

& Happy Thanksgiving to all .

Interesting on the rifle stock for less recoil wasn't aware of that, but I will say my old Colt HBAR is like shooting a 22 I can stay down on anything with that as fast as I can squeeze off a round.  Maybe that is part of the reason I had always put it up to the heavy barrel.

Buying a complete rifle and I'm digging all the variations DPMS has on their 308's pretty much something to suit just about everyone.  Have found a few on ArmsList for well under 1k with ancillary items might wait a week or so and see if I can find a screaming deal on a bare bones stock rig.

DPMS LR308 Oracle is what I have. Was looking for a ruger 762 and saw the Oracle advertised on a local F.B. buy and sell page for a bit less than $700 new in the box just 40 miles from home and a young guy answered the phone he was starting up his business has a class 3 FF L  got the rifle a Bushnell 308 BDC 4x18 scope and Burris rings and 40 rounds for less than$1000 out the door. He is local LEO and a vet does all night vision and surpressed hog hunting.  I also kept the original hand guard.

Since then He has sold me a Wittness  .40 S &W and my MIA National Match for better price than any where I can find.

I bought a secondhand (but still NIB) DPMS LR-308T (basically an Oracle with a FF handguard from the factory) back in May for $850. The guy had hung a Weaver Kaspa 3-12x50 on it and MagPul MOE Rifle Stock and then decided to build a .308 AR rather than gussy up this one.

With a Rock River trigger, I was able to get this rifle to put 5-round groups inside a quarter at 100 yards.

I ended up swapping the grip for a Hogue (great move, IMHO), changing the ridiculously high (but still not receiver-height) gas block for a low-pro from Fulton Armory, and a Fulton Rifle-Length FF tube. Then threw on an SEI Good Iron brake, and one of Slash's heavy buffers with AR10 spring. She now shoots soft as a 5.56 rifle. With all the recent changes, I'm still trying to find her favorite load as far as accuracy is concerned. She'll still put FGMM 168s within 1.25" at 100 yards, but I know this rifle is capable of better.

Looking to pick up a Leupold VX-HOG 1-4x20 to try out on this rifle. Luckily Christmas is right around the corner...

Buttonbuck not trying to persuade your build or buy, but they have some really smoking deals right now on 300blk out rifles.

I cant speak for myself about hunting with them but i have shot 2 different 300blk out rifles they are very accurate out to 200 yards and low recoil .

Just my 2 cents......

Thanks for the info on the 300 I have a couple of friends who shoot that platform and enjoy it.  We just have so many piles of 308 and it's served so well it's an ain't broke don't fix scenario.  I have run across a hand full of local 308's I'm going to take a look at over the next few days from ArmsList so the wheels are churning thanks for the input all.  One might work out really well he's keen on trading for my minty Colt HBAR which just stares at the walls inside the safe would be perfect scenario for me.  Fingers crossed.
