imschur
Im a big fan of 1911's and single action Smith & Wessons like the models 52,745 and 945 etc
Madhouse
The 1911 is my favorite, but I've got a bunch of polymer framed pistols too.
JD
I've only owned a couple polymer frame pistols. I sold my M&P 9 and bought a Beretta PX4 storm 9. The Beretta is more accurate but the M&P seems like a better built pistol, I'm happy either way.I like 1911's but the mag capacity of 9mm polymers is what makes me a fan of them. The price of 9mm ammo doesn't hurt too much either.I also own a Beretta Neos .22 pistol and a High Standard .22 revolver, Both are great shooters. So I guess right now my favorite would be the semi auto polymer 9mm. No offense 1911/.45 fans.

MrLowandSlow
I think it depends on what its purpose will be....duty, concealed carry, competition, etc. I think the Glock family is hard to beat. From the subcompact 26 to the competition oriented 34 to the devastating-for-duty-use 21, there is a Glock for everyone. They're reliable, accurate, and affordable. I will give MAJOR credit to a 1911 though, for they are the most beautiful design I've ever seen.
TANGO2072
I prefer GLOCKs ( 17 / 22 ), work forces me to use a SIG P226DAK ( 40S&W )....
sccritterkiller
For home defense and plinking I like the Berretta 92. Ammo and parts are cheap, accessories are endless. The light recoil makes the wife comforable using it if she should need to and the Crimson Trace grips fit on very well. It is one of two semii-autmatic guns I own that I have never had a problem with and they both are shot regularly in the best and worse conditions. The other being my Extrema. choppers454
The 1911 gets my vote. I grew up with them and shoot them the best....
SigSense
Quality and reliablity can be found in the Sig line. Love 'em all. But recently have found myself collecting CZ's.
Matt.Cross
The 1911. It's actually been around since 1908 ('11 was the year the military adopted it) and you can't argue with 102 years of reliability. :)
Para308
I just purchased a SIG P210-6 pistol made originally in Switzerland. It has nothing to do with Sig-Sauer which were made in Germany.According to the serial number it was manufactured some time in 1988. When I purchased it from a dealer (a hobby for him) it was with pictures and the understanding that is was in pristine condition. I was not disappointed. In fact the reverse. When I took it apart everything looked like the proverbial "the little old lady took her car to church once a week only!" Actually it was in even better condition than that. The machining and tolerances are superb. Anyway it came with micrometer rear sights and the test target came with it. The 6 shot group showed a spread of 1.75 inches and the range was 50 meters -- that's 54.68 yards to those of us who are metric challenged. The price was approximately $1650 but is was worth every penny. From what I have seen and researched and what others have said to me, that pistol would fetch anywhere from 2400 to 3200. I am extremely pleased with this pistol purchase.

jmatt511
1911 pattern semi automatic pistol. I actually prefer the 1911 to 19911A1 models., but you either go with a new Remington or an older manufacture.
ryantowry_81
that is such a loaded question......that is like asking which set of breasts a man likes to see best, it would take less time to list the ones he does not like.... <laughs>personally the only ones i have shot and not really liked are taurus sub compacts, never really felt good shooting them.If i had to pick a favorite it would be my glock 20 for its durability and i love 10mm and for carry my kahr pm45
SWshooter
The 1911 is undoubtedly the most versatile and refined of any auto, from a 6" long slide to an officers compact. Calibers from 22 lr to 50 GI. However, you wouldn't arm your average security guard with a 1911. If you wanted to arm yourself with a simple to operate, incredibly tough, absolutely reliable handgun the Glock would be my first choice. Matt.Cross
I saw a Browning Hi-power today at a gun show and fell in love all over again. I gotta get one of those soon.
SWshooter
This is a great discussion. I really like Hi-Powers, they are very ergonomic. I had a really nice commercial model about 72, 73. I carried it a lot and soon found out that for the size and weight of the gun it fired a puny cartridge. I went to a 5" 1911 for the bigger round, but it was still too heavy. I ended up with a Glock 17 because of the weight and the round count. When the 20's came out, I carried one for a while, but still too heavy. After many permutations I'm back to the 9mm for concealed carry. with today's ammo the lethality is much better than it used to be and there are some really compact 9mm's available now. I carried a S&W 39-2 for years and recently switched to a S&W 3914, the 39-2 is getting to be a collectors gun, and the 3914 is smaller and lighter and has the same round count. I also have a Glock 19 with a Lasermax that is my really serious 9mm handgun and a Kel-Tec PM-11 that is a throw away if I feel the need to carry out of state. I've also been known to carry a 2 1/2" 66, 4" 19, 4" 629 and a few other revolvers, but thats another discussion. Back to Hi-Powers, now that they are available in 40S&W , I wouldn't mind having one again.
survivalshop
Well , 1911 , I was weened on them . I find my self drifting toward my new XDM 45 , after just firing one mag from it & ya can't beat 13 +1 .(I had to wrap it up for me for Christmas )Of course I carrie a Kahr PM 45, but would not use it for every day range work .So, this is a loaded question . SWshooter
Yes, there is usually a conflict between what you like and what you actually carry. Duty guns are usually dictated by the agency and CCW by practicality.A fellow once asked me why I carried the 39 instead of the Glock 19, I told him because I can carry anything I want to now, and if I want to carry blued steel and walnut I can. I carry the S&W 19 once in a while just because it is such a beautiful handgun. I just have a real fondness for S&W revolvers. The first revolver I ever shot was a Smith 357, and the first handgun I ever bought was a Smith 27 357 mag. I told a young fellow a while back, I don't have enough time left to waste it carrying an ugly gun. Unfortunately I usually end up carrying a single stack 9 or 380 just for the convenience and comfort.
lobowidowmaker
1911 in any of its various flavors is my favorite. Much modified alloy frame Para-Ordnance P12 is my main carry gun. Rotate through a fairly large stable of polymer pistols as well. In the winter when more outer clothing allows will sometimes carry an N-Frame Smith & Wesson - usually a 25-5 (45 Colt). Every once in a while will sneak in a Colt Single Action Army in a Mernickle holster.
