preeze
hello everybody!so I'm new to the AR platform in general and just picked up a used Armalite AR10 T about 2 weeks ago.seems to be a first gen model with the old mag and a 24" black barrel.paid $925 for it at a friends gun shop and bought 80 rounds of Winchester fmj bt 145 grain ammo.first 10 rounds shot, 3 cases got slammed in the bolt when ejecting.it didn't short stroke because there was a live round being chambered everytime it failed to fully eject.cleaned the rifle, and fired 3 rounds the next day.all 3 also failed to fully clear the bolt and got slammed.next weekend, 2 out of 3 got hit by the closing bolt!!all of the empties are aiming nose out and pinched about 1/4" from the base.could this be the ammo? or do I have more serious problems??it ejects fine by hand but not when shooting!any input would be GREATLY appreciated.thanks

You might want to go to ArmaLite's web site and down load the owners manual and take some time to framilurize yourself with it. ArmaLite rifles are known not to play nice with underpowered ammo. You may want to look at a minimum of 150 grain... but for that perticular rifle I would look more toward the 168 grain.
preeze
thank you very much!I was thinking ammo was the problem seeing as how the rifle appears to be mechanically sound.I've viewed the pdf. manual at Armalite but could only find one for the A1 and A2 not the T model.I'll pick up some good ammo this weekend and give it a shot.thanks again,Jon
Retired JM
If the problem persists after the ammo change, then I would suspect the mag. Gen 1 mags were problematic at best. Gen 2 ironed out all of the problems
mrraley
Here is a quote directly from page 17 of the owners manual that I have on file...If your AR-10® Series firearm is chambered for 7.62 cartridges, it will fire all standardized U.S. military 7.62X51 mm cartridges and all factory loaded cartridges in .308 Winchester caliber. Do not attempt to fire any other cartridges in this firearm. Projectiles between 150 grain and 175 grain weight provide a good combination of accuracy and functional reliability, with 168 grain particularly recommended. If your AR-10® Series firearm is chambered for any cartridge other than 7.62mm, it will fire appropriate cartridges manufactured to SAAMI standards. The AR-10®(T) has a specially lapped match grade barrel. It is superbly accurate when used with Black Hills molybdenum disulfide coated match ammunition, Federal or other match quality ammunition. Naturally, accuracy is less impressive if lower quality ammunition is used.

preeze
thanks all, you've been a big help.and one of the first things I did when this started to happen was fire a round after I took the mag out. it still pinched the brass, so I know it's not the mag.I'll hit the gun shop this weekend and grab a few different brands of 7.62 in 168 grain and see what happens. survivalshop
I hope the different ammo works out for ya, but the rifle should have no problem with milspec ammo , IMO.The heaver weight bullets may help ,but I think there is some thing else going on . Remember run her wet with oil & while we are on oil , what oil are you using ?
preeze
Hoppe's 9 oil.used it all my life with no problems.mechanically, everything seems fine with the rifle so the cheap ammo was my first guess.
