I feel like ranting a bit! Why is Magpul not making lr20 pmag

in colors other then black?  I would really love to have a set in FDE to match the rest of my build. Feel free  to chime in guys.

I believe LaRue Tactical has exclusive rights to one of Magpul's colors, it might be FDE.

Let me Google Fu for you.

Stand by...

Edit: Ah, my mistake, its UDE.

And wow. You are right. Even Midway is only listing black for the 308s...

Does Krylon not come in FDE? It's an honest question, I don't really know but it seems like making your own FDE pmags would be easy with a can of FDE Krylon....

Sorry I don't have a better picture of this right now. I'll get another picture up later tonight... Maybe <dontknow>

I had mine sent to a guy who is a Duracoat specialist. He said there was a type of "finesse" required for painting the PMAG's and he added a special chemical to work with the flexibility of the mag. To be honest, I can't tell they're even painted. I allowed the full 30 days (and then some) for curing, before I started messing with them.

He did all my parts, worked very VERY fast, and had my parts back to me by the end of the week. I had him paint my stock, handguard and several PMAG's. He can color match as well. I sent him Magpul OD floor plates from some 5.56 PMAGs and he matched the paint perfectly. Compare for yourself against the OD Magpul MIAD grip I have installed.

I believe I read somewhere that the demand of 308pmags doesn't justify the cost of creating additional colors. Maybe this could change now that the sr25 mag is becoming the standard.

Making different colors is not hard or costly.  They just dump in the plastic pellets that they use for their other products.  The only extra cost would be for the bar coded lable to go on the plastic bag their mags come it.

I wish they would come out with an Ipad case like their phone cases.  Now that would cost them money.

As someone stated you can change the colors very easily through lots of methods.

Unless you are in a battle zone the finish will hold just fine.

That's going to come off very easy. However, if you can get spray paint in desert tan you can spray it with wood lacquer and once the "yellow" shade of the lacquer sets in it'll be a perfect FDE color. It's not perfectly stout but it holds up far better then just paint.

Testors model spray paint works better then Crylon and can be gotten in just about any color commonly used on gun parts and accessories.

I painted my PRS with Krylon and so far it hasn't even shown a scratch... However, I'm tempted to think of how many cans of Krylon I could buy for the cost of a new PMAG. Is it robust? No. Is it cheap & effective? Yes.

Preparation and sealing is the key to making cheap paint comes out like expensive paint.

A lot of people think prep work is the key and that is all there is to it. However if you do not seal in the paint or provide a barrier of some sort, no amount of prep work is going to keep the paint from being damaged by mild use.

I bet I could use a can of Krylon on a PMAG and make it hold up to at least a few purposeful drops onto the ground. No complicated secret, but put a layer of clear coat over whatever you do. Then using a scotch bright pad you can carefully rub out the "gloss" level until it gets where you want it, while still leaving the clear in tact.
