98's .338 Lapua Magnum

Finally got one.  This is a Savage 110 BA Stealth model.  They introduced it around 2017, and discontinued it when they came out with @Magwa's model.  First time, on this model, that they blueprinted the action.  Has the Savage Accu-trigger, which I'm a huge fan of, and it comes in the MDT LSS chassis.  24" barrel.

Witt Machine brake went on it as soon as it came home.  Don't really like the glass I got with it, so that's coming off, as well as those ridiculously high rings.  The scope was ordered, and is in at GunPusher John's, going with the Athlon Ares ETR Gen 2 UHD scope, 4.5x ~ 30x.  Getting mounted in Burris XTR Signature rings.

Shot it last weekend, kicks like a MOFO, because it's light.  The stock it came with sucked, so that's gone.  MDT Skeleton Carbine Stock already on it, and some MDT chassis weights on the way now.  Beef this thing up al little, drop the recoil.

Enough talk - here it is right now:

what balistic calculator do you use?

JBM Ballistics, to make all my dope charts.  I use the accurate weather from the Kestrel, and the true speeds from the Garmin chrono, and make the Dope Charts.  I rely on the Dope Charts 95% of the time.  When the weather is super-fukked up, I'll run the Kestrel just to get Density Altitude at the time, and use that DA to modify the holds/dials on the Dope Chart data...

The Kestrel has Applied Ballistics calculator loaded into it.  If I bluetooth the LRF to it, lase, get a distance, the elevation and windage corrections pop directly up on the Kestrel screen.  However, if I rely only on those two things, and I don't know the gun - what do I do when the batteries die?...

No, no way, brother...   Just working on loads, firing at 100 yards, and looking for pressure right now.  First test was a success, completely.  I need 2750 fps from this 24" barrel.  I hit 2792 fps on the 3rd load.  No need to even shoot the other two loads, with the higher charge weights.  I got what I wanted on the 285s with 87.5 gr RL22.  I know I'll get the 300gr projos to 2750 with the Accurate MagPro powder.

Looks good

Thanks, brother.

I wanted to keep running the 285 ELD-Ms.  I have about 75 of them left.  Figured I'd stick with it.  Looked them up, and they're $50~$60 a box.  Didn't want to pay $110 a box for the 300 A-Tips.

Well, shiit...   The 285s only come in 50-a-box.  The A-Tips come 100-a-box!  They're the same damn price!   300 A-Tips it certainly is...

Just looking at G1 drag factor, I found the load data for MagPro in the .338 LM and 285s / 300s on the Hodgdon load site.

They only listed 3 of the 300 grain projectiles.  300 Berger Hybrid, 300 Lapua Scenar, and the 300 Sierra MatchKing HPBT.   They didn't have anything for 300 A-Tips.  But a 300 is a 300, so I'm not gonna blow myself up working on these, no way.

So, G1 drag factors.

300gr Berger Hybrid - 0.822 G1

300 Lapua Scenar - 0.736 G1 (<<<  that one shocked me...)

300 Sierra HPBT - 0.768 G1

Looked up the 300 A-Tip...   0.863 G1.   That's the slipperiest bastard in the whole pile.  Won't have a single issue making 2750 fps from a 24" barrel.

FWIW - the 285 ELD-M has a G1 of 0.789.  That's a badass projectile.  :hail:

So higher the drag factor the better?

Higher the number = way more slipprier.  I just made a new word.   :lmao:  Bigger number = less resistance, fly much more better through air.  At least, that's what @Magwa was yelling at me, last time out here.   :laffs:

It is awesome you got a 338 Lapua I love the new butt stock.. and yes the higher the number the slipperier the bullet.. and slippery is what you want.that Mag pro will get you where you want to be as far as speed the only thing with it is watch the heat and or cold try to match the weather that you test in no extremes. yes I imagine it kicks like a mofo but dead weight will cure that....I have not as of yet worked with Atips but I know a guy who has I will pick his brain...time to get some nice boomstick.
