392heminut
It's my understanding that kevlar can break down over time and it's recommended that ballistic vests be changed out every 5 years. When I started the PD I bought my own Second Chance vest and replaced it several years later (about 8 years I believe) with a department issued vest. It was rated to stop a 44 mag when new. I took it out to the range a couple of years after getting the new one issued and shot it with a 158 gr. 357 mag HP. Bullet went all the way through the vest!
blue109
We get new ones every 5 years. Sweat and movement can break them down. I wouldn't let someone shoot me with a brand new vest on...or 2 new vests layered up. Edited August 11, 2013 by blue109

MaDuce
If you think the guy in the video is dumb, just read some of the comments on it. Sheesh. Here's an interview with him. Interviewer was being a jerk to him. I personally somewhat agree with the youtube comments. He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but if things get ugly, he might be the man I want backing me up. Judging from the interview, it sounds to me like he was well aware of the risks and accepted them anyway. If that's true, then he's no dumber then any dare devil. Robocop1051
I just got my newest vest this morning. We get new ones every 4-6 years. My last vest was dated 4/2009 and it was a Safariland level IIIa. My new vest is a Survival Armor "Falcon" series, also a level IIIa. blue109
my vest is a paca...but the man is getting cheap and everyone is getting new vests out of the galls catalog. I was meticulously measured for my paca by a shop that specifically caters to LEOs. Now its a supervisor with a tape measure if you are lucky. Possibly just a quick eyeball if they are busy. Of course they still hang little motivational posters all over about safety being the priority while guys are leaving vests at home because they fit like crap.
