glass recommendation

Recommended Posts

The Vortex's recommend to far or this one:

I have that Primary Arms 4-14x44.  Great high-end of the cheap-ass scopes.  Don't know if I'd feel comfortable with it on anything with more recoil than a 223.  I have it on a .22lr.  Works great as a trainer, though (crappy eye-relief and mushy turret clicks, but it works and its clear)

Yes.  The eye relief on the PA leaves a lot to be desired.  The thing that I liked about it was the reticle subtended correctly and as DRD said, the glass is better than most in that price range.  The Burris Fullfield E1 is clear as well, but I am not sold on the E1 reticle.

This Bushnell 1-4x24mm FFP is a very good general purpose scope for under $200. You can't find any other illuminated FFP scope at that price. Bear in mind that this is meant for CQB/mid-range use.

I've got one of them on my 300 BLK

Amazon: $199.99

Now, you are talking about buying Back-Up Iron Sights which will cost you a minimum of $90 for a quality set.....that could be $90 you could add to your already $500 budget.  You know you want it scoped so don't throw money away on other sighting systems that you kinda don't want.  That is going to kill your funds that you could use to purchase better glass.

He wants to shoot while he makes up his mind ( see his post # 13 ), its why BUIS was even mentioned. Good idea to get used to the rifle with Irons until he picks the right scope, good practice . Iron sights or BUIS/MBUS are always good to keep practiced at , as you know , of course.  <thumbsup>

I agree 100%. I read that. I was under the impression he had $500 to spend from his original post. My suggestion was to put that money he was going to spend on the iron sights with that $500 (or $410) bucks he has budgeted and get a scope.

Everyone should learn to shoot with irons.

That's a good point, besides being a good point by itself. But you have to wonder, who did not get that BB gun, and then that pellet rifle, and then that .22... or at least, step into that progression somewhere as a child.

Are there lots of guys that didn't start shooting BBs at the age of 5 and just, as adults, walked straight into shooting the big stuff?

You get the mid-dot reticle with Bushnell.  The Leupold glass in the redfield may be the equivalent to the Rifleman or VX-1, but it is not the Leupold glass in the VX-R or VX-3.....and no where near the Mark 4, 6, or 8.

You are in a certain price point and regardless of who makes the scope, they are not going to invest in the same glass, coatings, and seals as they do their higher end lines.   In that range, some are better than other, but only slightly.

All the ones you have asked about have good warranties and are solid companies.

I want to buy the mbus pro for that sweet price but I've read psa shipping is painfully slow. I'm to impatient I'll go crazy checking the status and tracking

You can hassle them and they usually ship almost instantly (the day after you pester them).

On a related note, I put in 2 separate orders over memorial day from PSA. One of them (the Burris PEPR) shipped out immediately on Tuesday while the other order (PWS FSC30 + NiB BCG) is still "processing". Go figure.

I had the Nikon 308. It was OK but I wasn't completely satisfied with it. Didnt like the BDC reticle, exit pupil size on it. Returned it to Cabelas and got the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP MRAD instead. Only thing going for the M-308 is the 20 MOA mount but that mount had issues of its own.

Can't go wrong with the Vortex Viper, really. It comes with almost all the bells and whistles found on higher end scopes.
