I've fired the S&W 460. It's a great PISTOL round for long range shooting with it's flat trajectory and clean recoil. But for a .308 replacement, I can't think of anything the .460 S&W can do that; out of a rifle, the .308 doesn't do better.

I am all for new ideas when they make sense but that thing seams like a step back in the name of macho. The .460S&W was designed for a handgun, in a handgun is where it shines and in a handgun is where it belongs.

If they can come up with an auto loading pistol that can fire such large rounds then THAT would be something.

You have completely missed the boat, MaDuce.

You need to look into the stuff that TeppoJutsu has done with the ,458 SOCOM.

Once researching that, you might understand.  Or not.

Met a young apprentice/Marine was talkin about starting a firearm shop about a 1/2 hr. away from me and doing something with the .458 SOCOM.

If the whitetail deer population comes back in this country I may have to build one of theses. 4 years ago I could get 12 doe tags and one buck tag. Rolling does with that thumper would be a blast. it defiantly has my interest. I was just rolling around the idea of building a SOCOM.

I'll wait for some more testing but it sounds promising.

I have a Marlin 1895 in 45-70... I wonder the ballistic difference?

Off of MD Smith's reloading page, this was the closest .45-70, with a 300gr JHP:  Varget 62.0 gr. 2,090fps (Compressed load)

I believe some of the Buffalo Bore loads make that look tame.

Edit:  They have some SMOKIN' loads!  BUFFALO-BARNES LEAD FREE 45-70 MAG +P  300 gr. TSX-FN (2350 fps)

300 gr. Jacketed Hollow Point (2,350 fps/M.E. 3,678 ft. lbs.)
