Its not about acurizing , its about safety. Improper head spacing can be dangerous to the shooter. On the most part ,the head spacing should be OK , if all new componets , but its always good to check it if you are assembling a new barrel or for that matter a new bolt on a old barrel . If you have never done it before , you can read up on in a AR milspec tech manual , Google it or take your completed upper to a gunsmith to have them check it . I check all my builds ,just for piece of mind .I have go,no go & field gages for .223 & .308 and a few others , mostly military calibers.

Not that I know of . I asked Brownells (I think they have them made ) & they said they had no plans to make one for a 308 , but that was last year . I have still have not seen them advertised. I lap mine my self using a different method .

What do you have on order or in the mail?

I've got one of those bearing type cam pins from POF for one of my 308's (the 16 " ) Going to try it out & see how it works . -
Recommendations for 4064 loads with Sierra 168 MK
survivalshop replied to lynxpilot's topic in Reloading
Well , I'm kinda stuck on ball powders (easy on the metering through the powder measure) ,but I did load some of my 172 gr. with 43.0 gr. of 4064 , using a CCI 400 primer ,OAL was 2.770 ( I go to the full 2.800 now ) WW case & they shot pretty good . My notes say safe load, brass looked good ,no pressure signs, but my notes also say could do better. Which means I could go a little hotter. High velocity as you know doesn't always mean more accurate. Like I said , I use ball powder , WC 846 , not a pull down , its was new powder about twenty years ago( I have a bunch of it ) . I use it for 5.56,308 & 30'06 & works very well . Its a good place to start. I have loaded a lot of 30'06 with 4064 for hunting . Note ; I don't know if they changed 4064 formula in the last twenty years, so use the loading manual & start as you would with any new powder. (Yes my 4064 is over twenty years young also) -
Is this a build ? How do you like the amb. mag release ? Is the upper & lower POF ? What Finnish is on the receivers ? POF is right up there on my list for next build.

c-product mag disassembly (lr308)

Yes , they come apart like an M16 mag.. I just looked at one . -
I read that the gas block has the gas tube set higher to clear the flutes in the barrel. is that true ? Does that mean the hand guard is higher also ? How high can the flutes be ? This is not making sense to me with out photo's or measurements.

DPMS Sportical
survivalshop replied to madmikes's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
You can alter them, just like the any AR platform.Triggers & stocks are the same , buffers & springs are different . Free float hand guards are 308 specific. They do make special 308 stocks in some cases, because of the length of the 308s charging handle, but that's not the norm . -
I would like to see some measurements of the barrel at the gas block attachment area of the barrel . Like I said , it would not surprise me if DPMS did some thing out of the ordinary to make you use there and only there ( for the time being ) parts. Look what the did to there upper receiver rail height. Whats so different about the SASS ?

I have this one on my 20 " .936 bbl. --- Gas Block, Titan, with Two Steel Compression Screws —exclusive Fulton Armory design, compresssion fit so it can't work loose —Choose .750" or .936" .750" 49.95 QTY: .936" 49.95 QTY: And I have this one on my 16" bbl. 308.-- Bull Barrel Gas Block $48.00 YHM-9387 This gas block replaces your existing front sight and provides a simple, low profile gas block to your bull barrel. It clamps to the barrel using 3 Allen screws. This gas block has a bore diameter of .936 inches for bull barrels. Manufactured from aluminum and finished with a matte black anodize. Made in the U. Now I'm not sure about the tapering thing , it would be the first that I have heard of that ,if true.It would not surprise me in the least ,if DPMS did that to keep there parts proprietary in nature. They would have to set up completely new tooling to do that or if they have there bbl's farmed out , that co. would have to do the same .

Not that I'm aware of .

18 " bbl. , go rifle length gas system . My 16" with rifle length gas system works just fine .

Cutting Barrel Down question
survivalshop replied to MNellis3023's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
If done right , cutting a bbl. down in both length & dia. should not be a problem . There is more to it than just cutting the bbl. down . It needs to be crowned & or threaded/crowned . Which requires special tooling . If you have done this before go for it , if not, send it to some one who does it for a living & backs up there work. You will loose a little velocity when cutting down , but unless you are shooting past 800 yrds, I would not worry about it . The .308 (or .260 for that matter ) has plenty of power for the ranges you are going to hunt in . I have a 16" that has no problem keeping around 1" groups @ 100 yrds & if I get around to putting a good trigger in her ,she will be under 1" groups . Next year I will be going to a 800 yd. range & give my hand loads & the 308's a real work out . -
Cool , I just saw that in an Email they sent me about the sale . You will not be disappointed with the BCG.

DPMS308 FEEDING PROBLEMS
survivalshop replied to charlie52usaf's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Make sure there are no burrs on the extractor & yours also sounds like its got a rough chamber . The rough chamber will slow the extraction down , which slows the BCG 's rear ward travel. Also check to make sure your ejector is not too stiff & is moving freely in & out of the bolt. With one round in the mag & upon firing , will the bolt stop lock the BCG back ? I have found on some mags , you need to load them up & let them sit a couple of days loaded to break the spring in . -
Naw , just keep building them . I'm also interested in the " EZ ".

DPMS Bull Barrel flash hider change
survivalshop replied to Iheartmy308's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
A set of barrel blocks for a vice are your friend . Do not try to take it off with a receiver block . It may also have some loc tite on it & may require some low heat. Should have ether a crush washer ,shim set or peal washer. It should be threaded , others who own factory rifles will speak up . -

CMMG .308 Rifles and Uppers
survivalshop replied to imschur's topic in Firearm Industry News and Gossip
Wounder if they will be selling 308 uppers receivers , separately. I would like to match my one lower. -
They appear to be just DPMS bolt carriers & you could of saved a couple of $$ by getting one here http://www.jsesurplus.com/ar308.aspx I can put my FA BCG next to the DPMS & looks all the same ,even the "D" on them . Now FA may have different required specs ,but maybe not . They both work fine .
