  1. Greetings back atcha from Iowa.
  2. Welcome from Iowa
  3. Do you mean... this trigger? http://tacfirecon.com/ Yeah, I think it was that one.
  4. Swissy, where did you place your pre-order?
  5. Hooray, this morning, November 13, Maglula says their DPMS/SR25 mag loaders are now available! Go to the Maglula home page and scroll to the bottom. It's now time for someone here who knows a dealer to negotiate a group buy for us. Remember, this is the Christmas shopping season!
  6. Now according to the news the LAX shooter used a Smith & Wesson .223. And according to Forbes, which is usually reliable, "everything points to an act of domestic terrorism carried out by an ideologically driven member of the modern Patriot movement." Geesh. Has anyone noticed that news stories of this event hardly ever say the words "assault rifle"? Have the press figured out that it's the man, not the gun? Maybe, maybe not. Forbes carries the 'right wing nut job' angle on this story, but nobody else. In fact, the news on this is pretty low-key. Could this be because there's only one fatality? Not really. There's been plenty multi-death shootings lately, but none of them have made the national news. But those deaths happened 'in the hood' and the airport is not 'the hood.' Oh well. Journalists are strange critters.
  7. Friends, The last few months I have been making regular visits to the home page of Maglula, Ltd. hoping for news on the commercial release of a magazine loader for DPMS .308/SR25 magazines. Their website always kept saying that the mag loaders would be out in October 2013. Well, a couple things have just happened. One is that October came to an end. The other thing is that they re-worded things on their website. Instead of saying 'coming in October', they say 'excited to bring you new loaders!' like they will hit the market pretty soon. Elsewhere on the site they say the loaders will be out in November -- which is, as you know, this month. I'd be one of the first to get a Maglula loader for my DPMS mags. They're a pain in the butt to load. Is anyone in our group in a position to negotiate a group buy of these mag loaders for us? It doesn't look like Maglula does sales direct to consumers, so the group buy would have to be a deal through a dealer.
  8. JP Recoil Eliminator. Just sayin'
  9. Kyle's American Sniper is a great read. It was so good that I bought his American Gun the moment it came out. It was a great read, too. It might even have been a bit better. I had no idea that particular firearms played such specific and important roles in US history.
  10. "in 2008 the federal Environmental Protection Agency issued new National Ambient Air Quality Standards for lead that were 10 times tighter than the previous standard. Given the new lead air quality standard, Doe Run made the decision to close the Herculaneum smelter." "after the Herculaneum smelter closes its doors in December, entirely domestic [u.S.] manufacture of conventional ammunition, from raw ore to finished cartridge, will be impossible." http://bit.ly/1bn2V9L Anybody want to bet that the real point of the EPA lead standards was to take a shot at US ammunition production? Obama said he would shut down coal-fired electricity in the US, using EPA standards, and he's thrown thousands of coal miners out of work. Welcome to the Imperial Government.
  11. It's official: the takers outnumber the makers. And that was already two years ago. This situation is what we voted for! =>Census Bureau: Means-Tested Gov't Benefit Recipients Outnumber Full-Time Year-Round Workers - CNS News - October 24, 2013 http://bit.ly/168z7xK "Americans who were recipients of means-tested government benefits in 2011 outnumbered year-round full-time workers, according to data released this month by the Census Bureau. They also out-numbered the total population of the Philippines."
  12. Install lots of video, street cams, porch cams, etc. Good idea anyhow, while you're shopping for a new neighborhood. CYA in the mean time. This tech is cheap.
  13. If I was gonna get serious about .17 I'd go for a .17 Fireball. But I wouldn't be puttin' rabbits into the stew-pot with it though. Maybe a fox tail for the antenna on my car.
  14. In spite of lots of looking around, I'm not finding very much real info on carbon-fiber barrels. I have a DPMS LR-308T and for walking around in the woods, it's a lot of weight and that takes out a lot of the fun factor. I'm thinking most of the extra weight is in the barrel. The stock weighs next to nothing and I don't see how much weight can be lost anywhere else. BTW I have Spike's heavy buffer and I'm not giving it up.
  15. It would be good to get the opinion of a squirrel hunter on the use of .17, if there's a plan to eat those critters. Which are tasty, I'm told. It might be there's so much punch to a .17 that it wrecks a lot of meat. I've heard, for instance, that CCI Stingers (.22) wreck a lot of squirrel meat and a slower round is better.
  16. Friends, The gun show is coming back to town and part of my mission there will be to shop for a good used sidearm, in 9 mm semiauto. I'm wondering if it's a bad idea just in general. The sellers may not know the history and use of the sidearms and may not want to tell the truth anyhow, for instance. Also, the pistols are all tied up with cable locks, so you can't tear them down and look for poor maintenance, corrosion, etc. Will these guys unlock the pistols for a takedown and inspection? Either way, is there anything in particular, or rules of thumb or general things to check? For instance I've heard that if the barrel rattles in the slide, that's supposed to be OK if it's a Colt. Is it OK for other pistols? How about tightness of the slide, etc? Or anything else to watch for? One thing I've noticed is that there's not much of a discount for used sidearms, the prices are close to NIB, which makes it possible to pay for near-new when it's pretty much used up. So detecting good quality would be the important thing. I'm very fond of the Ruger P95DC and would be interested in one of those or in something double-action-decock-no-safety and would look for other makes with those features, any recommendations? And of course any random advice is welcome. P.S. I tried to post this under handguns, apologies if I still didn't get that part right.
  17. .30-378 Weatherby?
  18. It's possible that this news article is a hoax. "Inmate Detainment Center" and a few other things just don't seem quite right.
  19. Do NOT order the grip from Tubb. The woodworking is so crude that it would take literally hours of sanding to make it as smooth as the picture. And when it was sawn off of the main block of wood, you can see where the saw bound up -- there's a saw gouge from top to bottom nearly 1/4" deep and the wood is burned from where the saw torqued. The inletting in the wood where the receiver inserts is off kilter and will not properly fit the receiver. There are no holes for the springs for the safety and takedown detents. No person alive has a hand large enough to hold the grip itself. I cannot imagine they let work like this out of the shop. I am sending this back and hoping for the best.
  20. I have two JP Recoil Eliminators, and neither one has flats for a wrench. Unless they've changed their design, Sooner will need another idea. What I did was put a screwdriver through the side of the brake and pull like heck. I'm not sure you can improve on that, other than wrap the scredriver in a rag first.
  21. I just placed an order for a Tubb Precision T2K RH Wood Grip (Walnut) from David Tubb for $69.95 (plus shipping). It turns out you can order the same thing from Midway for $92.99 (plus shipping), but you have to back-order with an expected in-stock date of October 13. I nearly ordered this earlier, and this is mentioned on another thread here, but there was some doubt whether or not this walnut pistol grip would fit a DPMS LR-308. According to the video at the company website, the grip 'would not fit an AR 15'. On the other hand, I got an email from the company saying it *would* fit a DPMS. With the blurb at Midway saying it fits "AR-15 and AR-10 rifles" and a discount (for now) of $23.04 via the Tubb website, I decided to take the plunge. I did manage to find another source of wood pistol grips for AR-type rifles from Pro-Grip, but I'm not sure I like the idea of the safety selector swinging down into a slot, and it looks like the design has maybe too much "pull length" on the trigger engineered in. Also, it's more expensive, at $135. I seriously would have been tempted to spend more money for a Nill Tactical grip, which is utterly beautiful, but couldn't find anyone who sells them. I nearly bought a Colt 1911 Grip Adapter from Pearce Grip so that I could put a 1911 Master Grip on it, but online comments changed my mind. Turns out the Pearce unit is plastic, doesn't fully support the entire grip panel behind the trigger, is wider than the standard 1911 hardware (meaning one-piece grips won't work), and always requires that the grip panel be inletted for the safety selector. There's companies out there that produce complete sets of wood furniture for AR-15s, like here, here and here. However, none of them offers a kit with a free-float tube for the DPMS, and none of them (I emailed them all) will just sell the pistol grip separately. At least, none of them answered the emails, and by now it's been months. Wow that was a lot of shopping. I take it as proof that there's an untapped market out there for AR wood grips. That Nill Tactical grip is awesome.
  22. I just ordered the Timney AR-15 drop-in trigger module. Sure took a lot of comparison shopping to decide what to do with the trigger on my DPMS LR-308T. Nearly got the Jard but decided not to on account of all the work required filing off bits of metal. Trouble with filing is that you can't use it to add metal and screwups are basically permanent.
  23. I just placed an order for one of these and they confirmed shipment a couple hours later. Kaw Valley Precision .30 cal. Linear Compensator. I'll be able to compare it to the unit from Bison Armory and will get back to y'all with the results.
  24. Friends, I just got some ammo from a friend, cheap, and wonder if anyone here can tell me something about it, like manufacturer, load, etc. It comes in brown 'manila' cardboard boxes of 20 rds. each, marked: 20 ROUND 7,62mm BALL BF 08-32 and a symbol which is a circle with a cross in it. Each cartridge is marked: BF 80 32 and a symbol which is a circle with a cross in it. Know anything about this stuff? P.S. I thought there was a sub-forum here called "Ammo" but couldn't find it. Sorry for any inconvenience.
  25. -- Kalashnikov switches to private hands in $41mn deal -- Russia Today -- September 23, 2013 http://bit.ly/1eBKXFu "It was conditional the investors be Russian nationals, and the two men have already pledged to invest an additional $78 million over the next two years to pay off debt of the AK-47 producer, which makes up 95 percent of Russia's light weapons." "Bokarev picked up the shares because he has a "financial incentive" and Krivoruchko sees the investment paying for itself in five years.
