Hooking up a buzzer near the paddock(doesn't have to be loud) that you can activate from the firing line just prior to commencing shooting.Realistically this one is a bit overkill. Start slowly, observe and go from there. It is doable

Truth brother... I had the vacuum operated originally, swapped to cable operated. Only idea worse was the use of vacuum operated windshield wipers, as you go faster vacuum drops thus windshield wiper speed drops

Part of the shorter barrel in the bush isn't just a weight savings thing but the ability to move/swing the barrel around in more confined areas. My primary bear country gun is a 45-70 16" lever action and I notice it compared to 18" bolt action rifle in bush. If your max range is 400yds, your not going to notice velocity loss with the shorter barrel.
