Working up some new Barnes TTSX loads for the 300 Weatherby Lubed, sized, trimmed, chamfered, uniformed the flash hole sorted by headstamp loaded up a ladder and went to the range. 1st group varied over 50fps, second group not good either, 3rd or 4th group max sammi had 1st 3 within 5fps spread and last 2 almost 100fps slower. Same with the max + .5gr batch, WTFO? Luckily last 2 batches were 3 good ones in a row and 2 slow, got me thinking... Looking at the brass when I got home I had mixed Weatherby R-P 300 Mag and Weatherby 300 Mag brass. Case volume 6.41 cc h20 vs 6.67cc h20, dry weight almost 15 grains more with the R-P. Looking back at my data it looks like R-P with 79 gr H4350 was close to the same velocity as Weatherby with 80.5, assuming all the slow ones were the Wheatherby I checked dry weight on a few Normas, and a couple other brands I had 1 or 2 of, all close to the R-P. Weatherby brass has more volume then the rest. Got to sharpen the eyesight at the reloading bench before sending 25 bucks worth of reloading components down range at 3400fps!

Yep. Carbon copy different color.

Modulus Arms is the other one. With the 5D it's easy to end up with extra parts, if you get the milling kit you don't need the mill. The 308 extender part costs the same whether you bundle it or buy it later if I remember correctly. It does ar9/ar15 with the basic pro kit.
-
There is another brand as well that appears to be a clone of the 5D, shows up about page 3 of a google search. I think I went with the 5D rather then the 80 because of the cutter and router base, but to be honest I can't remember exactly why I chose it. I did look at both pretty extensively before making a choice, close call. The 5D I have does do 9/15/308, good chip extraction, and is very beefy. I also went with the recommended router, and a foot switch is a great addition as well. Zero issues.
-
What Jig are you using? The latest 5D Pro worked quite well for me on a AR15 lower, have the 308 parts for it also but haven't done one yet.

If you want to bring a build in under $1,000.00 that won't let you down when the zombies attack, Sightmark is on the list.

The Spec series uses the big battery. Lasts forever. The detachable mount returns to zero very well, even though I don't think it is an advertised feature. We put one on a friend's AR 40 pistol and it required absolutely zero adjustment, right out of the box. I adjusted mine once when I installed it and never have had to touch the adjustment since. Little over $100? I'm impressed.

Think I see a Sightmark on that DB Have nothing but good things to say about my R-Spec.

Tried out a Stern Defense Drop in FCG for blowbacks in the carbine, definitely not the feel of the SR Gold I have in the 308 but not bad for $139. 2lb+2lb 2 stage in its stock configuration. Comes with an extra green spring for a lighter "Not recommended for blowback bolts" setup, might try it in one of the DI guns, maybe it bridges the gap between $300 dollar "Breaks like glass" FCG's and Millspec single stage "creep, creep, bang"

Back from the range, final results in: 16" Carbine Sprinco red spring / 10 oz KVP tungsten buffer chewed through 180 gr plinkers, 180 gr major loads, and 155 gr 1500 fps+ with ease. Good "back on target" split times. 4.5" pistol Ditto above except for didn't run any of the lawman 155's From several trips to the range with various combinations, it seems to me a 10 oz buffer will run with several different spring weights, both pistol/ carbine, but a 7.5 oz buffer will only run in the pistol even with the EA1095 spring Slower cycling makes cheap mags work better, and factory mags work flawlessly. Springs I used from light to heavy KVP Extra Power 308 carbine Sprinco Red EA1095 Buffers: KVP 7.5 and 10 oz Just my opinion, but it seems possible to over buffer to the point that rounds will feed but bolt travel is insufficient to engage the disconnector, resulting in burst mode Also my opinion, it seems possible to under buffer to the point that the bolt speed is fast enough that either a. parts are moving so fast that the disconnector doesn't grab, or b. the effect of slamming into the "end of travel" jars the disconnector enough that it does not grab. Whatever the mechanics involved the results can be a bit bloody, out of battery slam fires and such, highly recommended to avoid at all costs!

Is that a commercial vs Milspec thing?

Local Gun Shops That Stand Out - Good to Go
Albroswift replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
In the middle of liberal-ville, Bellevue WA, you will find Lowpriceguns.com Little shop Quick service Lots of AR lowers very knowledgeable about the legal stuff, pistol builds, braces vs stocks, etc. Never been over 10 min for FFL stuff. I live in Seattle but nothing here, as bad as SF. -
Envious is all I can say

Stuck cases 300wsm,trouble shoot more or convert to 6.5

Just read through your thread, 2 things jump out. Headspace and timing As you tried 2 different barrels, could it be the bolt causing the headspace issue? I'm relatively new to AR Platforms but been reloading since before the Clinton Administration and stuck cases and headspace issues transcend platforms I would be curious to try one of the spent rounds in a case gauge. May need to cut the neck off or neck only resize the brass to get it to fit. if the bolt starts moving back without the resistance of the shell, possibly could pick up enough speed to bend the bolt catch on the way back . Did you ever replace the extractor, or just the spring? -
+1 on slower bolt speed making the cheapie mags feed better, even the uber cheap ones. Red spring maybe even better judging from last sundays data, although I didn't have an orange spring to try.

yes, southpaw shooter. Mag looked like a disassembled mag, didn't find the follower. Been thinking about it, 7.5 buffer works in 4.5 in barrel / ipsc 180 gr loads with KVP Extra power spring, Sprinco Red Spring, and EA1095 spring Rare double tap With the EA1095 7.5 buffer didn't work in 16" carbine even with EA1095 spring. 10 oz buffer works in carbine and pistol with Sprinco red spring or KVP Extra Power Spring. Occasional double taps with the EA1095/ Carbine. Didn't try 10oz/1095 in pistol I think with the 16in barrel the dwell requires a 10oz+buffer regardless of spring. Red spring /10oz buffer winner chicken dinner

pretty sure you can get anything to go off out of battery if you fuk around enough with it...

Bloody range report AR40 Pistol and Carbine First tried red spring/ 10 oz buffer in the carbine. Flawless. Even a couple of the iffy mags functioned well. Recoil was sweet. Then took the EA1095 and 7.5 buffer out of the pistol which had been working well with the factory mags, and put the 10oz/ red spring combo in that. great results. Then put the EA1095 + 7.5 buffer in the carbine, had a couple of jams even with the glock mags, and like an idiot I kept going, until I had a lawman 155gr HP go off out of battery blowing one of the cheapo mag into its basic components and taking a chunk out of my chin. Blood everywhere, had to finish up the 2nd project of the session (springs and red dot on a glock) periodically blotting blood out of my beard and off the bench. To summarize, in 7" tubes, 15.5 oz Stern Defense BCG: RED Sprinco/ 10 OZ buffer excellent functioning combo for pistol, carbine EA1095/ 7.5 oz buffer good in pistol, although same combo in the other pistol we built this year did have some double taps EA1095/ 7.5 oz buffer NO BUENO in carbine. Curious why worked with 4.5" barrel with 180 gr IPSC loads but not 16" barrel with 155 gr +P, all other things equal. Forgot to try the red spring with the 7.5 oz buffer, a little out of sorts after the blow to the chin. Looking back from the 50 yard berm

Mild handloads are fine with the right powders. You probably know most /all of this but I like talking reloading Just need enough pressure to: 1. Inflate/ seal the brass to the chamber 2. Get a clean burn 3. Cycle the action- after achieving 1 and 2 here is where I would start messing with different springs, but usually don't need to unless going uber lite. I have had good luck with Titegroup for medium recoil auto loads, leaves a gray coating on the crown but burns clean at medium recoil loads. There are a lot of other powders that fit the bill as well. My medium 45 load is 4.5-4.7 gr Titegroup 230 gr Xtreme round nose 1.265 COL 4.5 gets a little under 700 fps in the Kimber Ultra Carry 4.7 gets a little over 750 fps in the full sized. manageable recoil and accurate. And economical. Cleanest powder I've used is VV3N37 in autoloaders but need to load mid to upper end. (Costs more and uses more, but clean and snappy) Clean up with dry patches.

Got the red spring, it is longer then the extra power JBO/KVP 308 spring, shorter then the EA1095. Got it in the carbine with the 10 oz buffer, report back tomorrow hopefully.
