    Single shot rifles

This thread got me to thinkin' and doing something I'd been meaning to do for years. I contacted SSK and inquired how many barrels they chambered in .375/06 JDJ. The answer was 14-16 and they added that even fewer were chambered in .376 Steyr. FWIW, I have never put a shoulder stock on it and don't even have sights of any sort that would lend itself to rifle use. But the barrel itself is capable of it.
  2. Well, there can be. The rabbit hole can but doesn't need to go deep unless you want it to. Start slow and maybe you can get more involved but there's nothing that says that you must. I started with a single stage press and just what I needed to reload safe 9mm ammo. It took me years to become a handloader. There's still a great deal that I don't know.

And I thought Cajuns ate pretty much anything! 😊 I had SSK make a .308 Win barrel for my Encore, and after getting it in realized that I could have added another 1.25" and had a barrel that could also be used as a rifle just by putting the shoulder stock on the action. I didn't make that mistake with the next barrel, the .375/06 JDJ chambered barrel (Handcannon) that I had SSK make for me. The designation should tell you that the parent cartridge is a .30/06, the cartridge itself is a wildcat. Here it is as a handgun, but the barrel and expansion chamber/brake make it long enough for use as a non-NFA rifle should I ever want to use it that way. Due to the Encore having virtually no action length the 16 1/4" barrel is doable as a handgun. My wrist has had enough for one day after firing 20ish rounds of full powered ammo. It pushes a 300 grain bullet to 2300 fps with very little muzzle flip due to the brake, the recoil all comes straight back. Of course it can be downloaded to make it more tolerable. It's powerful enough for elephant and accurate enough for squirrel. It was designed to put a solid in one side of an elephant skull, pass through 4' of bone and the brain, and come out the other side. In testing it went straight through 36" of solid fresh cut beech across the growth rings. Penetration in beech is much less with an expanding bullet, 7". It's the first cartridge I had where I felt confident enough that if a deer was standing not too far behind a not too large tree, that I could shoot through the tree and bag the deer. It's an easy 300 yard handgun. Here it is as a handgun with a 1911 and a .45ACP as a comparison. In the out of focus cartridge pic' the cartridge is holding a solid bullet. If one looks closely the expansion chamber can be seen as a graceful belling at the muzzle.

JMJ, are Nutria good for anything?

That's a nice rifle! Made even better because it's "family".
  6. You should to do so soon then. As with everything the left touches they destroy it. Right now they're working on destroying the lobster industry. That's a good part of the flavor (in more ways than one) of the coast. Let me know if you plan on it.
  7. That's a lot of bullets. I think if there were any surprises you'd have seen them and maybe did with those few flyers. I built the Takedown as a SBR just to see how small a rifle I could build. It takes down and would fit in a knife roll and no part is longer than 11". But accuracy is disappointing, at least to me it is. It's good enough for Steel Challenge though which is where I use it. If I still hunted it would be good enough for small game. Maybe not a squirrels head though, and it has no "holding" qualities. It's not a long range rifle. I assume the Volq' barrel will have a tight chamber but I don't know for certain. I've never had a tight .22 chamber in a semi-auto so don't know what to expect. It's been on order since 5/15 and should ship in a few weeks. I'll see what I see after it arrives (obviously). Right now the Takedown wears a red dot, but I have a 2-9 scope that I bought for it that it rarely wears except for testing. It might wear it more frequently if the new barrel works out. The scope would stay on the new barrel. My accurate .22 is a Browning T-Bolt. The last time I shot it on paper at 50 meters it was incredibly accurate. That was 50 years ago. I bought it in Weisbaden (west Germany) Rod & Gun Club and while I know that it has hit everything I've put the 50 year old 7/8" scope on for all those years I haven't fired it at paper again in all that time (except to check zero). I should. That would be some enjoyable time at the range, esp' after I get the new barrel. If we get some warmish weather I'll do it soon otherwise it'll wait for spring. I no longer like the cold. I see you're in Wisconsin, you know about cold weather. Right now we're having an extended warm spell, but it can change any day. I have considered putting a better scope on the T-Bolt for long range competition (NRL?) and if it had a heavy barrel I would in a heartbeat since I don't hunt anymore. I still might do it for more trigger time and to get the rifle out of the safe and back doing what it does so well, launching bullets. It's a shame to have it in there as a safe queen.
  8. It's been a long time since I shot a long barrel 10/22 at any distance. That's squirrel head worthy. Nice! I don't think my 10/22 Takedown Charger can do that. But I have a Volquartsen barrel coming in for it and I've been told that it'll turn it into a tackdriver.

    Single shot rifles

I've been kicking around the idea of my next TC barrel being chambered in 300 BLK for truly quiet subsonic loads. But 2+ years ago I priced one out and if memory serves it was $500+ I have no idea what it would be today. I've got to be caught up on my mandatory upgrades before I buy the barrel which really would be more in the toy category (want vs need).

    Single shot rifles

My state has no regs mandating single shots but I like and use them anyway. Or I did for hunting when I was hunting. I have them in TC Encore, a .45/70, and a .17 Rem. . In Contender I have a .223 that I use for subsonic 35s. The latter is hellyweird quiet. Why did I get "into" them? I used to hunt with a bolt action but realized that all I ever needed was one shot for the close range jump shooting I used to do. So why carry around extra length and weight? FWIW, I got to playing with .45/70 loads and since the Encore has modern metals and is a modern action it will handle pressures the rifles of the period could never think of handling. It almost reaches .458 Win velocity if ones shoulder can handle it. Of course it'll also do much slower and easier on the shoulder velocity as well. The .17 Rem? The bullet "gets there" before the hammer falls or so it seems. I pushed 25 grain "needles" to well over 4000 fps (4200?) but had to back it down because the bullets were coming apart in flight. Today I keep the velocity down to 4020 fps. Hit a 'chuck with that and it sort of explodes but holds together. There's no recoil, so the 'chuck can be seen to get really big, then back to normal size. The innards turn to mush and if the entrance hole is found it just weeps juice. Hit a squirrel and the back side comes flying forward so fast that the squirrel jumps forward. It's a neat cartridge but not for meat.
  11. Oh, why is the mag extension painted? It's normally in the side pouch at the end of the eyeglass case so it can be seen while the mag body itself is covered by nylon and hidden. In years past I had 1911 mags in there and plainly visible. While we were shopping I had a friend point to them and state, "I know what they are! But I'll keep quiet.". What if he hadn't? Nothing would have come of it but for him to prove himself an anal sphincter. But I went to 9mm and the double stack OD mag extension pretty much makes the mag invisible and even if seen it doesn't look like a magazine. I was "made" one other time, well sort of. When we grocery shop the Fatboy rides in the child seat. Either the wife stays with it or I'm with it. We both have carry permits, but even if we didn't Maine has Constitutional carry. On one of those days a gent pointed to it and stated, "You know that can carry a handgun?", to which I replied, "Yeah, how about that!". The look on his face was priceless.
  12. OK. I ran out of time to get the picture to post above. Ridiculous to not allow us time to get things correct. I'll keep trying here. Ah, success!
  13. https://postimg.cc/K1Xs54zq I hate stuff in my pockets so a pocket dump would be useless. Instead I’m doing a Maxpedition Fatboy dump, seen at the top. On the Fatboy is an added black pouch for cell phone that’s not in the picture but normally carried when I’m out and about. Contents, clockwise starting at upper left, car key, truck key, flood type flashlight, wallet, Gerber clip knife that I use as a money clip, spare eyeglasses, box cutter type knife, CC permit holder flipped over, pen, spare extended mag, S&W 9c (40 rounds total for any zombie invasion), spare 18650 cells, custom spot type flashlight with a reverse clicky, mace.
  14. About the Cats Tongue test that you requested... I need heat for that and that's something Maine has little of this time of year, even in a closed car. We may see 70°F in a day or 2 and that is unusually high for us for the time of year, but I would think more heat would be better. I see you're in Iowa maybe you have what's needed there? Where I'm going with this is Yes, I can do the test you wanted here in Maine, but I can also send you a piece and you can do it. If so, I make one request and that's to let me know how it turns out.

I'd need an address for the envelope. Or I can do a substandard test here. Please let me know.

My concern is that there was a message in this space indicating it was public. I don't want ANYONES address to be in public view.

If it does turn to goo I'll let you know. So no news will be good news. But if you inquire to make sure that would be fine.

This is weird - it's like you two are having a private message, but it's viewable to the public (and apparently I can join in).

Yeah, it's public. Open up a message area and it tells you that it's public before you write anything. After starting this I think I found the private message area right next to it but I haven't tried it. I'm nothing if not slow. 😄

  15. I just looked on postphoto and my EDC pic is old old old. I'll get back to this.
  16. I can do that. I'll find a pipe to put a piece on. I think at the end of the week the outdoor temp will be 70 so the car should warm up.
  17. Welcome to the forum from central Maine! We have similar interests, I shoot steel challenge and USPSA. In SC I shoot in rimfire rifle open division (SBR) and in USPSA a PCC SBR. Next season I'll probably also shoot a rimfire pistol open as well.
  18. Aren't they just for the muzzle brake to wear to prevent shooters on the right and left from hog tying the user until they're done shooting and leave?
  19. Still have the Volquartsen 10/22 Charger takedown barrel on order (since May 15) it was supposed to ship 10/20 but has been pushed back to 11/11. I was expecting it. I emailed Vol' a month ago and asked if the Oct date was accurate and was told to expect it to take a few more weeks. Steel Challenge season is over so there's plenty of time to wait for it. In the meantime I got in 500 rounds of 9mm, that was the limit allowed otherwise I'd have ordered a few k. Minor stuff... I used my last 2 point sling, so put another 2 on order. I like having at least one on hand. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N75HB15/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And ordered a roll of this. I'd been using skateboard tape but saw this and wanted to try it. So far it feels good, nice and sticky, both sides, and not much thickness to change the fit. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08CS3Q3Y4?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details Canuckgaucho, I've heard good things about the 180 over the years. Good getting around the excrement.
  20. Hobbies! Well, a very mild heart attack and open heart surgery has curtailed lots of things I did in the past. I have had a love of firearms and shooting since my very early teens and I've doubled down on that, branching off into casting bullets and I never thought that would happen but prepared for it during the klinton years. As I age I've also been experiencing loss of muscle mass despite exercising, so I've been selling off many of my conventionally stocked long guns and have been replacing them with bullpups, SBRs, and handguns. I still enjoy cooking and eating I just cook and eat differently but probably not what you're thinking. Everything that "popular knowledge" knows about heart disease is absolutely incorrect. I assembled a packer brisket, cut into 3 pieces, into corned beef. or it will be corned beef on Nov' 8. From the corned beef state I can turn it into pastrami if I want to. Dogs are still a hobby too, but we've downsized and gone to much lower mass dogs. Dog and not dogs actually since we had to put down her larger brother a month ago. But we'll get another companion for her when we find the right one. I still do DIY, but on a smaller scale.

    HIPERFIRE

Lots of dust on this thread but maybe it'll help someone. I have a Hiperfire Genesis in my 300BLK and while I don't have a high round count through it yet I liked it the first time I dry fired it. I have the light springs in it to give (not a typo) the heaviest primer strike. It's a very nice trigger and mechanically absolutely nothing like a GI trigger.
  23. I've often wondered if they don't sometimes line up all on their own and we never see it.
  24. The link: https://shopwilsoncombat.com/GAS-RINGS-AR15_M16-ONE-PIECE-STAINLESS/productinfo/TR-HGR-15/ I have one in my 300BLK build and it works fine. I have yet to use the other AR that has it and I have yet to dig out the rest for replacement. Wilson also has AR10 one piece rings..
  25. I was going to ask about one piece rings. I think they make sense, and with no data to back it up I swapped to them.
