There are 4 different sizes that are possibilities: .625", .750", .875", and .936". I've never seen a .308 AR barrel that uses the .625" gas block diameter - that would be one thin-walled barrel! :o Most common are .750" and .936", on standard and bull barrels, respectively. .875" isn't "uncommon," but it's just not as common as the other two sizes. You don't need to be precise in the measuring to determine what yours is - it's pretty basic. About 3/4" in diameter (.750), 7/8" (.875), or 15/16" (for the .936).

Basically, any of the ones that will work on the AR-15 will work on the big brother, as long as it fits under/inside your rail. Determine what the mounting area diameter is on yours, and look for a low profile AR gas block. Tons of manufacturers. Easy enough fix - just take it to a gunsmith that can put a slight polish on that .308 Win chamber. <thumbsup>

Carbine gas system on that one - based on the parts that are stock on that, you could definitely benefit from a heavier buffer (find Slash, at HeavyBuffers.com), but I'd suspect a rough chamber, possibly combined with the ammo... Try some different ammo first, man, and see how it does with that.

How about the full specs on the rifle? Let's get that going here, and see what we're working with. Fixed stock, rifle buffer, or collapsible stock and weighted carbine buffer, etc. Barrel length, gas system length, so on... That'll help. Buffer can have an affect, but it's typically not the sole culprit. It can be, but usually not. <thumbsup>

Yes, ammo can definitely be the issue, as well as a rough chamber. Combine the two, and I can certainly see that breaking an extractor. Approximately how many rounds through the rifle, total?

People that build these .308 ARs need to understand - not aimed at you in any way, too - that the VLTOR A5 system is only for 5.56 ARs, and it's not gonna work with the .308 ARs until someone makes a specific, custom buffer for a ".308 VLTOR A5" setup. In terms of 5.56 parts, that VLTOR A5 buffer isn't a carbine-length buffer, and it's not a rifle-length buffer - it's in between, and weighted differently (3 different weights possible). <thumbsup>
