One way to check the condition of the gas rings is to extend the bolt all the way, then stand the complete BCG up on the bolt (balance it for a second if you have to, so it doesn't fall over). If it stands up on it's own weight, and the bolt doesn't collapse into the carrier, then the gas rings are fine. If it falls down and the bolt sinks into the BCG, you need new rings.

And those standard parts needed modified for what reason? Why didn't the parts fit into the lower that you already bought? That's kinda the question here - and the warning to others. Maybe they've fixed what they were doing wrong, but they were definitely doing something wrong for quite awhile. That's the whole point. If it's fixed, it's fixed - and new production from them should be okay. However, there are uppers and lowers out there that dealers may have been sitting on for a hell of a long time now - those might not work so well for consumers. Not bashing them - I hope they got it all together now. The buyer needs to beware, though.

Iron Ridge had to fit that standard off-the-shelf lower parts kit to your rifle, though, didn't they?

However, with the demise of the Marlin levers, Mossberg took notice, and they're making a damn nice lever gun now. Check that thing out. <thumbsup>

What are you gonna lap?

First, don't EVER slam a Go/No Go gauge into battery by the bolt release. EVER. That's one way to really screw up a semi-auto firearm. You RIDE the bolt carrier forward on the gauge, and if it doesn't seat, you have a problem. Hope you haven't done anything worse to the rifle by doing that, besides whatever issue it already has. Chances are, you've done more damage to it by doing that.

That will probably never, ever happen. These things can't be built from new parts as cheaply as the AR 15. That's just how it is.

Neither one of those is made for .308 ARs. Those two are out.

Kinda hard to immediately commit to keeping it pinned in 3rd gear right off the top of a 100-foot hill that you can't see over... <laughs> I worked up to that, and it was in the clip - last time I hit it. By the next day, the high winds had completely changed that whole takeoff. It would have been suicide to try to go out there and do the exact same thing right off - and that gets alot of people out there. The dunes can change daily. :o

1.46lbs on the UBR. 1.68lbs if you used the .308 PRS, but that's not counting the receiver extension (which the UBR comes with). So, the UBR has some beef to it, but it's still slightly under the weight of the PRS. With a 20" .308 barrel on there, even fluted, it's still going to need something out back to give it some balance. A PRS would do it well, the UBR would almost be the same, and anything else is going to leave it front-heavy. It's a .308 with a 20" barrel, so it's not going to end up as a carry-all-day, light gun. <dontknow>

Awesome, man - I miss the hell out of slug season there. I'll have to call my brother and see how he did. He's WAY INTO bowhunting, but he always goes out for slugs, too. Hunting is hunting for him. <thumbsup>

Militarily, my gear of choice was Tactical Tailor, going all the way back to the mid-90s. By the late 90s, I was using as much of it as I could. From the early 2000s, all I used was the MAV 2-piece vest setup. Since that gear always worked so well for me, I still currently run that rig, but the MAV 1-piece now. If I need more than that, I've got a padded belt setup (that's all I use when just shooting handguns - no vest necessary for that stuff). The med bag is on there most of the time, but I sometimes change it out for a Maxpedition Roly Poly.

Jon, it can hold 9 total. 7 in the tube, 1 in the chamber, and you can ghost-load another one on the lifter tray (that's with 2 3/4). <thumbsup> The only way to get more in there is with a longer mag extension. That shotgun will eat anything, too. Doesn't matter what the load is. Digests it all without a problem.
