Armalite AR-10 in .338 Federal
98Z5V replied to imschur's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
You can go to Ammo Guide and check out the cartridge/case dimensions - there are 26 different .338 cartridges listed. Some are kinda similar, many are vastly different. http://ammoguide.com/ -
Pure evil... <laughs> I've had hands-on for that one, and it's definitely on the dream sheet - but $4.5k... That money would buy a new crate engine for my Jeep. <thumbsup> <dontknow> <lmao> That's the second time I've seen it for that price, too, which is about as low as it gets. Primo hardware, right there. One day, one day... <thumbsup>
-
:o I just want to hang out and shoot with you sometime. Shoot the crap, shoot your guns... <lmao> That's a SWEET rifle, man. <thumbsup>
-
After gunsmithing on the 1911s, you'll find that building anything-AR is a piece of cake. <thumbsup>
-
Ah, I forgot about the bullet button crap you have to deal with. I'd look there first - at the mag release setup, and how the bullet button is threaded onto the mag release. If you're able to hold the mag in a position to make it feed accurately/correctly, that's gotta be an indication that the mag release isn't holding it into the proper position (when you're not gripping the mag). Make sense? I think I confused myself, trying to explain that... :o <laughs> Edit - what's happening to your gun is called "bolt over ride." Some Google searches on that term should give you some decent results, and maybe how others have solved it. <thumbsup>
-
10/20 - you using 10-round conversions from some company, but all P-MAGs? Bent and mangled rounds (feeding problem) can be caused by mag springs that are WAY too strong, but I haven't seen anything like that from a new 20-rd P-MAG so far. Not even brand new ones, outta the wrapper and loaded at the range. It can also be from the BCG short-stroking, like imschur asked about. That's gonna come from a gas problem, or a buffer/buffer spring problem.

This part is a big deal on the .308s, because the mag catch parts are all AR-15 spec stuff. They have to be turned in just right on the .308 (not flush, but not too far from flush with the button), or they'll turn into a problem later - if not a problem from the start. May not be the exact problem the OP is having, but it's something to check out. <thumbsup> I was wondering about the "bb" reference, too. <dontknow>
-
Well, that's another $200 further away from the .338 LM then... <dontknow> <laughs>
-
Damn. I need to look into it more closely. That'll be worth an additional $200 stamp.
-
It's getting closer, too - Shooting Season. <thumbsup> <lmao> My local free range is opening back up for the season on September 1st, so just about every Tuesday and Wednesday that whole month, I'll be putting in some target time. ;D Can't wait, man!!! Two brand new guns to break in, and a whole bunch of match .308 to put into the circle. <munch>
-
Haha! Bribery!!! <lmao> I posted up the .22 stuff in the other thread - it's all from CMMG. <thumbsup>
-
Here's the bolt hold open plate - open your receiver and set it right in there. CMMG is taking pre-orders now, and think the piece is around $20. Here's a shot of the add-on that makes the forward assist function - drops into your existing CMMG (Ceiner-design) .22 conversion bolt:
-
Oh, I'm motivated! <thumbsup> I'm still waiting to pick up the CMMG drop-in bolt hold open plate, and the drop-in forward assist mod. I LOVE the .22, man!!! ;D I'll be runnin' that sucker just like a full-size AR pretty soon... <laughs>

There is no help. Nothing 100% works. Best thing I've found is to fire them at the range, then only half clean them (all the "new ones" that keep showing up in the safe...). Once they look a little dirty, leave the safe open when she's around - she'll peek in there, trust me. If there's something she sees that she doesn't recognize, you know she'll say something like "Where did THAT come from?" "Huh? That old thing? Been in there for a long time - can't really remember when I got it, but it's been awhile. Wow, the thing is filthy..." If she persists, just say you moved the stuff around in the safe last time you cleaned them, so you could move the dirty ones (that still need cleaned) up front - that way you'll get to them. <thumbsup> I can't guarantee it'll work for you, but it works for me most of the time. If you can't dazzle them with brilliance (hard to do when we're on the spot, like that!), then just baffle them with bullpoopy... <lmao>

Awwww, man - you KNOW I had to look... :o That's the basic one right there, with the Mossberg barrel. Upping the anty a bit to the LW barrel will cost ya another $300, but the LW Supermatch barrel is $500 over the base price. Toss another $200 in the pot to have the barrel fluted, and it's taking my $1,348 base price for the .338 LM upper to $2,048. I'm still planning on it, without a doubt. Might be my Xmas present to myself, if I'm lucky. <lmao> I don't know where the hell this SBR-bug came from, but I've been bitten pretty hard by it... :( I figure it you're gonna pay the $200 for the short barrel tax stamp, why not suppress the thing, too?... ;D <thumbsup>
-
Haha! I'm starting to think it's something more serious than "contagious." It's definitely an affliction. Uncurable, too. :o ;D
-
You are a bad, bad man, Drew. Bad... ???
-
Bad news for the .338 LM update, but good news, too... well, kinda. <munch> I'll go with this ZEL .338 LM, but with all the options on the barrel - that will take it from about $1,400 as a base price to over $2k for a final delivery cost. So, save a little more, right? <dontknow> I had a Kimber 4" pistol getting in my way, but I've dismissed that thing - for the time being. That can wait. What just can't wait right now is my SEVERE ITCH for a SBR... I'll be building a 11.5" SBR over the next couple of months (I honestly, sincerely hope it takes a little longer than that - just as proof to myself that I don't really have a "problem"...). The need for an SBR has over-ridden everything else right now - and I can't honestly explain why. <dontknow> THAT'S the problem... :o SBR = NOW

Forgot to add this part - I broke my digital camera. How that happened, I have NO idea. <dontknow> I simply thought the batteries died, so I put new ones in it - and it didn't turn on. I pulled out my $450 multimeter and tested the new batteries, and they're WAY GOOD. I killed my camera. I didn't drop it, or throw it (been known to happen, really...), it wasn't submerged in anything at all... I have no clue. It's been used and abused, so I think I just killed the damn thing. :o I'll get another one before the shooting-outing, but that's just another delay for me... :'(

A'ight, I've got a literal poop-pot full of shooting I need to do coming up, and I'll need to "schedule" it all to make it right. I've got the Little Woman's 16" Middie to break in (she's going to the range to do that herself, daimet, not me - her gun, she can "suffer through that" herself). Have to break in my 16" billet Middie, of this thread here. <thumbsup> I need to get on some .308 stuff, directed (and ordered, by the way) from Drew - both bolt and semi. My local, sweet, FREE 100-yard range opens back up on September 1st, then we have kids going to school after that weekend, UUUUUNNNGH. Shat! (They need to get their arses outta the house - or get downrange and start holdin' my targets for me...) After that weekend of "the kids in school," I should have some bolt gun ammo pics to put up, and if I time the range right, I can shoot bolt gun on a Tuesday and semi on a Wednesday. I be workin' on Thurs~Sat, relieving my brain on Sunday, and can get results up on Monday. Earliest I'll be able to shoot will be 7~8 Sep, latest being 14~15 Sep. Excitement will ensue... <lmao>

I've got the Magpul sights on all my rigs except for one, but that's just due to cost. You can pick up a set of the MBUS sights for cheaper than you can get a rear Troy sight. Now, on the mention of the Troy's - Ive never, ever seen a bad account of them. From everything out there, the Troy sights are the best of the best. <thumbsup> The other sight that I have that's not a Magpul is a GG&G flip up rear, on a rifle with a fixed front sight base. That's a damn good rear sight.

The headspace that you measure (with the gauges) is the relationship of the bolt to the barrel extension, closed on a chambered round (casing). The extension is sized and mounted on the barrel to acheive the proper headspace. After that, the mounting pin is emplaced, and the gas port drilled, so everything is centered up. After MUCH use, headspace increases, up to the point that the weapon fails the check on the Field gauge. It's armorer-time after that. Reaming the chamber can't fix that. Headspace gauges are about $30 each, and for new builds you'll need the Go and No Go gauges. For in-service weapons that have a pretty decent round-count on them, if they close the bolt on the No Go gauge, you'll need to purchase a Field gauge to be sure the weapon can/should be safely fired again. At any time, if a weapon closes the bolt on the Field gauge, don't fire it. There's a fella on AR15.com (username Cabinetman) that is lending out a full set of .308 gauges, just for the asking. If you're interested in that, the thread is in the "Varients" section, titled "Offer to any .308/7.62x51 owner," or similar to that. He sent me the gauges to use last March (?) and I sent them on to the next guy on the list. They've been going ever since. Free use, if you've got the time to wait for your name to come up on the list. <thumbsup>

Yep - header paint. DEsign Engineering (DEI) makes the best stuff out there: <thumbsup> http://www.designengineering.com/ Their header paints: http://www.designengineering.com/category/catalog/design-engineering-inc/exhaust-wraps-accessories/ht-silicone-coating

That's just wrong, man - It's bad enough that we have to wait on parts sometimes. I see the need to stock up on some things, but... I can't even do that. "Spare" gas tube roll pins grow into a full gun faster than my grass grows. :o Get it while you can, buc. Just tossin' that out there... Spare parts will be hazardous to your wallet, though... ;D
