mineralman55
Original ARs had really thin barrels. So does that impugne the long term reliability or the accuracy of these rifles? Expect, what, 5000 rounds before needing a barrel change? I'm just interested if anyone knows?

blue109
The military fattened the barrels up after soldiers in Viet Nam started bending them. there is a big post on ARF by one of the OGs at picatinny who was heavily involved with the A1/A2 upgrade. he said the bending barrel thing was the reason for the fattened up barrels, but it turned out to be wrong. the drop gauges were getting caught on the gas port and the testers were assuming it was a bent barrel.
