It's a reverse psychology ploy to keep them from getting in gunfights where they have to face a .45ACP. I don't blame them, I don't want to be up against one either. :D

There was a study a couple of decades ago on caliber used vs. distance the gun fight started.  IIRC, the .38 and .357 had the closest engagements, 9mm not far behind, with the .45acp coming in the furthest at 21'.

 

The author concluded that people who carried .45s were smarter and didn't let perps get too close.
