ChaseFan9
This is the monkey paw, I'd really like to thump someone with it. Put the loop around your wrist and swing the ball, which is a 2" oak knob Oak? I figured you'd have a steel ball in the end....

blue109
Helped a buddy install a camera system in some rich lady's house. Was relatively easy to install. 8 cameras of varying quality using coax for power and signal. Wireless camera at the driveway gate spliced into gate power. Only real "work" Was cutting a hole in the roof to bring the coax down and finding the best way to route/hide the cable. The coax and the wireless receiver plugged right into a hub, and that plugged right into a small CPU designed for the purpose. Had a small internal memory, with provisions for external hard drives and moniters. Minimal setup. Was pretty much plug and play. Soon as I can afford a simple system I'll grab a few cameras and dig in.

Wireless, with a DVR and 10,000 hours of memory. Amazon has many similar packages.
mrmackc
The system I am building is Uniden with a 7" control panel with capacity for four wireless outdoor day-night cameras each has motion detection several modes of operation. Signal transmission between camera and control is wireless but the cameras have to have normal house power to operate. The output can connect to TV or computer and you can access the system with a cell phone. It is way smarter than I am.
blue109
The power requirement is why we went with the wired cameras. We didn't want to find and splice into the hard lines. Lady wasn't paying for that much effort lol.
mrmackc
I agree a wired cctv camera system works fine in a single building setup and is less expensive to buy and install using coax. My cameras are located in outside buildings that do have power outlets, so wireless works okay and is easy to install.
Rsquared
I use a combination of these.......http://www.discounthomeautomation.com/On-Q-Legrand-Cat-5-Color-Bullet-Camera-IndoorOutdoor-OQF2299?sc=25&category=535128 And these....................http://www.discounthomeautomation.com/On-Q-Legrand-Color-IR-Camera-Kit-OQCM1029?sc=25&category=535128 And they plug into modules like this.http://www.discounthomeautomation.com/On-Q-Legrand-Cat-5-Based-Camera-Module-4-Port-OQCM1011?sc=25&category=535133 These can then be plugged into DVR/PC. Pretty decent pricing for them also. All powered over the CAT5 cable used. One cable for everything. These were a nice upgrade when I went to them a couple years back. hunterbob
I lived in the boonies and these are facts... I always had a plan and my Son and Wife knew exactly what it was, matter of fact; they would say it word for word to me when I repeated it. lol Pistol In bedrooms hidden 45 near door and Winchester 1300 behind that one.... Dog to alert us and outside lights with motion detectors.... For intrusion situation wife guards back door and is concealed (44 Mag) Son covers hall and other windows in bedrooms... I take the front door with 45 ACP 10:30 PM lights are out and walking down hall to Bed.... There's a knock at the door.... I find black woman in distress and wants to come in a use phone... (outside screen door is still locked) Son took up position to back me up with shotgun... He is not visible .... but can see clearly... and down the hall behind me. Wife is in position with lights off near back door.... I go to get phone and bump door and a big perp 6' 4 jumps into the opening, with a sign post raised to strike... I point the 45 and Son points shotgun through screen door......We holler wrong house and drop the post .,,. We used the dog to clear the property with.... no problem... Have a plan

planeflyer21
That's great Bob! Some friends of friends had a plan for if someone knocked on their rural door. Everyone yelled "Someone's at the door! Get the shotgun!" Friends and family didn't knock, all other made appointments and were expected. mrmackc
Those are really a couple of good plans, this is what I was hopeing would appear in this thread! Where ever you are, double lock the doors. A security storm type door isn't too bad to look at and gives an added bit of security. NEVER answer the door without a pistol or revolver in your hand after dark or in day time either ,if you can't see who is at the door even if you are barefoot and Nakkid! And let the others in the house know you are going to answer the door. It is better to scare the crap out of someone than be killed. mrmackc
What is the best motion detector-dusk to dawn security light for the money and where is best place to buy? Store or online? Edited August 14, 2015 by mrmackc
blue109
I worked at a place that had some really cool ones. They were motion lights with a camera in the center that followed you. Had about a 90° swing. don't know the brand but they were impressive. Nothing says I SEE YOU like a flood light tracking you up to the front door
mrmackc
Awesomely I found a motion detector tracking light on AMAZON. It is a versonal nightwatcher security light and the basic version is$149. But no camera. Edited August 15, 2015 by mrmackc
blue109
The bar tender at the place didn't know much about them, but said they were about $250 each. Place was in a rough part of town, and I actually saw shady looking people turn and walk off the property when it started tracking them. Must be some psychological aspect to an active system like that.
slugger43
We have motion detector lights at the perimeters and a plain dusk-to-dawn at the doors. Using something with a lot of adjustment is a great idea. We can see our entry areas without opening the door. Doors are metal, heavy deadbolts, always locked, home or not. After dark, you had better be good friend or family if you show up on our property. .45, .40S&W, short 12 gauge pump happen to be our choice of persuasion. Peep holes in the doors are a heck of a good idea, also. Dog will hear 'em if we don't, a great alarm. I can tell you for a fact that a 1911 will convince people not to return. Son-in-law got me a sign that reads, "If you can read this, you are in range". It's one of the reasons we get along.
ChaseFan9
If your door's on the thin side, add 7 or 8 coats of Rhino Liner. A buddy of mine tested it out on 1/4" steel plate, and it SUPPOSEDLY stopped a couple rounds out of his Barrett. I can't wait to verify this one.... shepp
Slugger I've got one that says nothing in this house is worth your life with a shot up target one it. My motion light is nothing special got it from menards and its mounted to the over hang of my roof at my garage, if has three separate light pods and the motion sensor. On the motion sensor you can adjust light and motion sensitivity, my front door is almost straight to the left of it and I can't make it out the front door with out it going off. I've got the sensitivity set so it'll pick up the end of the drive way some times a car will set it off

unforgiven
Something as simple as 3" stainless steel deck screws in the striker plate of the door knob will help also.
slugger43
Something as simple as 3" stainless steel deck screws in the striker plate of the door knob will help also. Super point. Really simple but most locksets come with a small striker and something like #8x1" screws. Old Aunty Agnes could kick in one of those. Long screws and a four-screw strike plate are a really cheap and cost-effective security device. You can also get deadbolts with longer bolts that go deeper into the jamb, and longer hinge screws don't hurt either. Door chains are OK, but not very strong. The flip-over limiters used in a lot of motels are a lot more effective and quicker to use. Same thing here though, as unforgiven noted, buy some longer screws for these, also.
