OldSarge
Hello all! First post. Please bear with me.I have a Sig M400 5.56x45, and a Windham 7.62x39. I finally took the plunge and bought a Windham 308. I got all of my accessories to make it mine (quad-rail, foregrip, etc.), and a Nikon ProStaff 3-9X40 BDC scope. I took it out a week ago. Got a nice big bruise on my cheek. I had to roll my head sideways trying to get a good sight picture on it, and it bit me good. Several times. I am thinking my scope may be mounted too low. The eyepiece is flush with the charging handle to the rear, so I may even have it mounted incorrectly to the rear. I just don't know. I am trying to figure it out, but this is my first relatively high magnification scope, and I want to make sure I don't keep throwing money at mounts, etc. if they are not the root of the problem. I am hoping that those of you on this board with more experience can show me the light! I bow to your experience!Regards,OldSarge
Toolndie7
I dont think height is gonna help with eye relief. Ive got my scope as low as possible and also about flush with the CH and I have about 3.5" of eye relief. Your scope specs out about the same eye relief as well? try re adjusting your cheek weld? OldSarge
Just wondering if maybe the stool at the range was too high for me, as I was shooting from the sitting position. Could be. I will have to try different things. One thing is for sure, that old boy has some recoil! Edited February 23, 2016 by OldSarge Wrong word used. I thought the higher Burris mounts suggested by the local gunstore owner that specializes in "Black rifles" was off a bit when he suggested a high mount for my Bushnell 1X4 BDC scope. But after I mounted it with the eye relief correct for the LR308 DPMS rifle with the original 6 position butt stock it works fine even with the center line of the scope 2.8" above the bore of the rifle.I tried to mount my 50 year old Weaver K1.5 with the original weaver mounts on my older Remington 700 .3006 and it was about 1.5" lower than the Burris mounts, it was a disaster, bruised cheek and jaw shooting from the bench. The tall mounts look awkward until the rifle is shouldered and eye ball is looking through the lenses.
shepp
I would try a different mount, play with it. I replaced my vortex scope because I didn't like how I had to move my head around to get a good look thru it. Turns out it was my mount cuz the new scope did the same. The old one was a Burris p.e.p.r ended up replacing it with a Nikon mount. welcome to the forum from southern Wisconsin

survivalshop
It is a good thing to get your Optics as close to the barrel as possible , but with AR's ,thats a hard thing to do for most shooters. Depends what Stock or Stock system you have & your facial features , everyone has a different Cheek Weld on a Stock , adj. cheek risers are a help for some . I personally use extra high rings on all my AR's , no matter what Stock I have on . Its also a difficult thing to get a measurement , you have to have a resettable & comfortable Cheek Weld & go from there . I mount a Scope & look through it after getting my Cheek Weld set & if not getting a good sight picture , I figure by moving my head , where i need the scope to be ( Up or Down ) usually up & use a small tape measure to see how far I had to move my head & come up with a measurement from the Rail or Mount & look for the Ring height that comes as close to that measurement as possible . Some Manufacturers have their measurement from the Base of the Ring & some have it from the flat of the Ring that sits on the Rail or mount . Gets confusing , some don't give a measurement & just say , low ,med , high or extra high . Eye relief is set by a full sight picture , viewed from your secure Cheek Weld . If you have a insecure stock seating in your Shoulder & it is slipping off when you take a shot, you will get Scope eye every time or if eye relief set too close . OldSarge
Thank you all! I am going to try what you've suggested. I am not new to shooting at all, but not well-versed on the black rifles. I shot one in Basic Training and then again qualifying for mobility purposes, but that was many years ago., Just got back into them the past couple of years. Love the 7.62x39 Windham so much that I decided on the Windham for my .308. Awesome quality rifles! I think I am going to buy a rail I saw online that will raise the scope height by .83" and hopefully that will do it. I already have some cheek risers for the standard stock. Hopefully these things will do the trick, but regardless, I will report back!Again, thank you for your help and advice!Dave

OldSarge
I guess I do, too! I have lived here for a little over 33 years now. Pretty good town. Too darn many cars! I work for the same place I served enlisted as a civil servant. I still wanted to serve. My country has been good to me, and I want to return the devotion. Regardless of what you see on TV these days we are still great! Thanks for all of your welcomes and well wishes!
