RRS Posted September 17, 2016 Report Posted September 17, 2016 (edited) Hey Guys, So here is my first .308 gas gun build thread. I've listed what I have, and what I need (*), what I know, and what I don't (TBD). If you see something I missed, or am making a mistake on, please chime in. My current struggle is trying to select a barrel and gas system, I am agonizing over it, but I will continue to geek out on Google and pick brains here till I can decide what to do, this build is intended as a target/LR gun. And away we go: THE RRS AP M5 TARGET RIFLE AP M5 Receiver Set Young Mfg BCG *MechArmor Charging Handle AP M5 LPK Milspec Trigger (Plan upgrade - TBD) *Ambi Safety TBD *Grip upgrade TBD Magpul PMags Rifle length Fixed Stock DPMS Rifle length Buffer Tube Stock 308 Buffer Tubbs Flat 308 Buffer Spring *Barrel TBD *Muzzle Break/Flash Hider TBD *Gas system TBD *Barrel Rail TBD *BUIS TBD *Optic TBD *Rings TBD *Bi-Pod TBD Thanks for the input so far, look forward to wrapping this up in the coming weeks. (* = Have not yet purchased item / TBD = To be determined) Edited September 17, 2016 by RRS
jtallen83 Posted September 17, 2016 Report Posted September 17, 2016 I have found the ambi safety a waste, I never use it and the one on my 716 interferes with my grip. Upgrade the trigger from the start, don't waste the time and money on a mil spec trigger. I have had great results with ADM scope mounts, never shot loose and return to zero every time. Love my Atlas bipod, tough and light weight. The price sucks but buy once cry once. For the money Vortex and the Bushnell tactical series scopes are a lot of bang for the buck. and that's my two cents....

To your suggestions; Ambi - Ya I know right, and especially on a LR gun too, but I just seem to put em on every gun I build, will try to forgo it here. Trigger - Yes I am, just got my head stuck around the barrel at the moment, but I will drop something bitch'in in there fire control wise. Scope mount - Will check ADM out, I've been using Badger Ordnance. Bi-Pod - I like the Atlas too, I will probably bite the bullet and do that. Optic - Was looking at the Vortex, I think it was the PST 6-24X50. Thanks again JT!
98Z5V Posted September 17, 2016 Report Posted September 17, 2016 There's really only one place to look for the ambi safety - Battle Arms Development. Pick your lever configuration. There might be others, but the quality and performance is unmatched.
sketch Posted September 17, 2016 Report Posted September 17, 2016 Ive been after that same vortex for about 4 months they are way behind!

RRS Posted September 17, 2016 Author Report Posted September 17, 2016 STOCK Q: For a LR/Target gas gun, whats the thinking on stocks, preferably with a cheek weld / length of pull adjustment.
98Z5V Posted September 17, 2016 Report Posted September 17, 2016 Without weight as an issue, the MagPul PRS. Not much out there with the same amount of adjustment that it has.
RRS Posted September 17, 2016 Author Report Posted September 17, 2016 Weight is not a big issue for this one, will investigate into the suitability of the Magpul PRS, thank you.
RRS Posted September 17, 2016 Author Report Posted September 17, 2016 WOW, now that is what I'm talking about! https://www.magpul.com/products/prs-precision-adjustable-stock-sr25-m110 But damn if its not also uber expensive too, ouch. Just like most things that fall into the uber category I suppose. Ugh. I might just have to have that though, very cool stock, hmm?
98Z5V Posted September 17, 2016 Report Posted September 17, 2016 I've got one on a 20" 5.56 precision gun - very nice stock. If you search out deals, you can find one for around $225. Sometimes they go on sale for right around $200. Gotta be quick to find them at that, though.
RRS Posted September 17, 2016 Author Report Posted September 17, 2016 STOCK PURCHASED Bought it!! Got it in FDE for $186 bucks + shipping from Bud's. https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/714012916/Magpul®+MAG308-GRY+AR-10+PRS®+Precision-Adjustable+Stock+Gray (Mine is FDE, when I went back to copy link to paste it here, the FDE one was, poof, gone. They still have grey, olive, etc in the AR-10 size though.) Thanks again 98Z5V, that's just what I was wanting. Now for the barrel!!! Looking at FultoArmory right now, have bought a couple for AR's in the past, made by Criterion. We'll see.

RRS Posted September 17, 2016 Author Report Posted September 17, 2016 BARREL SELECTION Fulton Armory Barrels made by Criterion. 18" or 20" or do I dare go 24" is the question. Here's what I am looking at: http://criterionbarrels.com/AR-10 Might as well get this all out of the way now and explain to my wife once. HA!
98Z5V Posted September 18, 2016 Report Posted September 18, 2016 I did the Fulton 18.5" on my first 308AR. One hell of a barrel.
JJ109 Posted September 18, 2016 Report Posted September 18, 2016 I know its a little late. I have this on my build http://www.luth-ar.com/product/mba-1-fde-w-308-buffer-kit/ Ita lighter then Magpul. Includes everthing cause it comes as a kit. If you just bought the stock from luth its only $149.95. Just throwing it out there

RRS Posted September 19, 2016 Author Report Posted September 19, 2016 I am thinking I will buy the FA Criterion barrel tomorrow, in a 20"... Say something now or forever hold your peace...piece... anyway you get the idea. This is a hard decision, I feel like its so hard to get a bead on the right call, err!
DNP Posted September 19, 2016 Report Posted September 19, 2016 Well, guess you're gonna need a rifle in every size. At least until you pick a favorite.

Why the 20" and not the 18.5" barrel?...
