RRS
Just that this is more of a semi stationary target rifle, so a couple things I suppose; Would have rifle length gas system which would mitigate recoil. Might de-gas what is generally considered to be an over gassed gun (308 AR). The extra length might help with accuracy. A little longer is beneficial in terms of dwell time, etc.. Are you thinking the 18 is a better choice for this build, or just better in general? Thanks for the feedback!

If it's a bench queen go for it, if not these rifles get heavy fast so any little savings helps
98Z5V
My 18.5" is just over 21" total, with the comp on the end of it. Most muzzle devices for these things add about 2.5" of overall length. So, your 20" is gonna end up about 22.5" long for the barrel assembly. That extra 1.5" of barrel isn't gonna get you much. Except more overall length to lug around.
RRS
Okay, so you guys don't see any benefit in the rifle length gas system? Sounds like the general opinion runs 18 w/ mid length gas? Hey, as for gas, considering the hot and cold of these things getting tuned in, is an adj gas block the way to go? If so, any front runners as for brand/model you could throw out to save me time and mistakes on that front? Haha
survivalshop
I only use rifle gas systems on 308AR's , 16",18" & 20 " all have had no issues or over gassing , no real need for an Adj. Gas Block , but some here use them & like them . Superlative Arms has an interesting one or two , they make them in many forms , releases the extra unused Gas instead of just cutting it off from the Barrel . http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/gas-system-parts/gas-blocks/ar-15-adjustable-gas-block-750-clamp-on-prod86814.aspx?avs|Style_1=Adjustable I have one of their Piston systems on an AR 15 & it works great . RRS
Thank you SS. I am surprised this barrel length gas set up issue has not been more definitively resolved, its a stymie fo rthe advancement of 308 builder movement. Alas, I am confused, again. Ha So a Rifle length gas is okay on a 18" barrel? In the end my biggest concern is to avoid building a gun that won't run as intended. jtallen83
Like several others I have a rifle length gas system on a 16 inch barrel . Took some fine tuning on the port size but it runs every thing I feed it now.
RRS
Thanks JT. So the big detractor is the weight issue, huh? For me, a gun intended for temporary placement or permanent installation the length isn't as much a concern, I'm looking mostly for comfort (shooting), reliability, and accuracy in this particular build. Thanks for all the great input guys, much appreciated! I wanna order, but am gonna sleep on it and order tomorrow. Will post the update when I do. ;-)
RRS
The Double Clutch Read this: http://www.scout.com/military/snipers-hide/story/1496625-hello-2015-now-replace-your-308 Now seriously considering going 6.5 CM. RRS
Haha... Seriously, its cheaper to load, better ballistics, I can use my existing purchases, ie; bolt etc., so no harm no foul... I realize it is a 4th quarter change but... Hmmm. RRS
Well, I have almost convinced myself... haha. So many great barrel mfg's these days... Brux seems to have some decent pricing... anyone have any experience with them? This 308 is a venerable old staple, I begrudge it nothing, I've shot more than my fair share, but this 6.5CM is a bitch'in round! Like I said, I am almost convinced. RRS
Just heard consistently positive things as I am doing some due diligence and scanning through the Hide, as well as what I have gleaned from the threads I have read. Broughton looks to be a good one that I was unaware of too, I've know of most of those, hell they're all good right, any of them would make me a barrel that frankly I will only do an injustice to as a shooter. survivalshop
Ya , the 6.5 is all the rage with Target shooter's , if thats what your goal is . Its a speedster & with all high speed Cartridges , your Barrel life expectancy will pay for it . Some have had feeding issues , the Feed Ramps on some rifles need to be tweaked , because of the Cartridges case shape . Good Ballistic's on that Cartridge . Very simple adjustment with a hex wrench and it helps create a very soft shooting rifle. Machining is superb. Their prices are mid-range between non-adjustable gas blocks and the uber-expensive ones.
