Im looking to get into some type of AR 10 and would appreciate some guidance, I happen to have a Garrand 308 and a M1A 308 so thats why I prefer to stock 1 ammo and keep it simple..so the other night I missed out on a Gunbroker AR10 Armalite, new, case & two magazines..1050$, and it had the solid stock that I want, with a scope mount. So I was reading trying to learn, and found a commentary about the 3 platforms, Armalite, DPS and 1 other I can't recall...I would like to hunt with it as we are loaded with deer here, (and I'm out of jerky), I have a spare nikon308 scope, but no nothing about Red Dots or Holograms and those are  kinda small in comparison. So....Palmetto ? Armalite ? MP ? any thoughts/endorsements greatly appreciated.

The 3 platforms are Armalite, DPMS, and Rock River, with the DPMS platform being the most common.

Bad thing about Rock River is you are stuck using their stuff.

I own their Coyote rifle,I like the gun but wouldn't do it again.

Aero precision has a good product and I own a lot of their products.

The thing to remember is plan it out and stick to the plan,Areo precision makes it a one stop shop.

Thank You guys for your thoughts, IT REALLY HELPS to learn from those smarter than myself, Jtallen83, your suggesting building an Armalite platform rifle with Aero brand parts ? if so would you suggest what parts..18" barrel ..2 stage trigger etc. ?

I think he was telling you that if you want a full, complete rifle, buy an Armalite. I concur.

If you want to build a rifle, make it on a DPMS-based platform, and use Aero Precision major components.

If you want to get into using all Armalite guts (complete operating system and recoil system) in a DPMS-based outer hardware build - I can tell you that it works, flawlessly.

Here are the details on that:

98 clarified my suggestion perfectly, factory built an Armalite is a great rifle, Aero parts for a build might be more satisfying in the end. I would suggest a 16-18 inch barrel, Criterion is one I plan on owning myself but there are lots of good Barrel makers out there. Buy a LaRue MBT trigger, solid quality, best trigger for the price point by far.

Buy a factory Armalite buffer system, they sell kits for carbine and A2 stocks. These Armalite parts will work with a Aero/DPMS pattern build all day long.

I'm also partial to the A-2 stocks and outfitted all of my 308-AR's with them.

I built my first 308-AR with Alexandria Arms upper/lower and A2 stock with 308-AR spring/buffer, no issues.

The second 308-AR is a PA-10, 14.7" barrel and converted their lower to the A2 stock as well.

I more recently obtained a DPMS Oracle and put an A2 stock on it.  For all three I used the spring/buffers offered for the DPMS:

DPMS LR-308 Buffer Rifle   308-BS-11

DPMS LR-308 Buffer Spring  308-BS-10B

No issues to date, but after doing more research and reading threads on this Forum I'm wondering if these are the correct parts?

I was also told by the shop that sold me the Alexandria parts that I should have used an AR-15 buffer/spring assembly in that build, confusing to say the least.

Somewhat related but I also used an A2 stock for my 450 Bushmaster build, but used an AR-15 buffer/spring assembly in it.  Attached a pic of it below, the first rounds fired out of it at 100 yards.  Two sighters then 5 rounds for the second group, then off to the woods deer hunting.......Cliff

I'd add here that the groups fired in the 1st pic were the first 7 rounds fired from the 450 Bushmaster.  I bore sighted it, fired two rounds that are touching, then 5 rounds pretty much in the same hole. Out of the box that rifle has been the best I've seen with factory ammo for any autoloader.  I'm sure I could even tighten things up some more with a higher power scope, the 1-4 has pretty thick cross-hairs and not much of a sight picture on the target at 100 yards.

I've achieved very good results with my 308 AR's after working the triggers and hand loading for them.  All three absolutely love the 175 grain Barnes bullet over Varget........Cliff
