Xkalifornian Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 Greetings from Arizona. Great to be here, and great forum! The terms neophyte and noob are understatements pertaining to me (please be gentle). :binkybaby: I have a M1A and an AR-15 and am looking to combine the platforms to and get an AR-10. My goal is to buy or build an AR-10 ON A BUDGET! The all caps are for you guys who would gladly help me spend what little funds I have. I do have time though, God willing. The rifle will be for self defense and range (maybe hunting). Like I mentioned, I'm a complete novice and don't know where to begin (other than soaking up as much info from this site) Once again, great to be here and I look forward to your recommendations. Thanks, Mark
unforgiven Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 Welcome from Indiana brother Mark. The term "AR10" is specific to Armalite corp.,if thats what you'r looking for it's a damn good rifle.
Xkalifornian Posted August 11, 2013 Author Report Posted August 11, 2013 (edited) Unforgiven, You see, I am indeed a true noob. I did not know this. I think I would like to build a 308 AR. Thanks for school'in me. Edited August 11, 2013 by Xkalifornian

planeflyer21 Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 Welcome from Arizona, Mark! Where are you located? There are quite a few of us here that are here...we get together when we can.
EasyEJL Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 welcome from florida! and a 308 AR and "budget" don't belong in the same sentence. if you are persistent and careful you might be able to put one together for a bit under $1500, but not a whole lot less. just in the major components lower - 300 upper - 200 barrel - 250 BCG - 250 you're at 1000. then stock, parts kit, handguards, etc can easily be any amount at all and the buffer tube is 308 specific as well.
Xkalifornian Posted August 13, 2013 Author Report Posted August 13, 2013 Welcome from Arizona, Mark! Where are you located? Also near Fort Huachuca. welcome from florida! and a 308 AR and "budget" don't belong in the same sentence. if you are persistent and careful you might be able to put one together for a bit under $1500, but not a whole lot less. just in the major components lower - 300 upper - 200 barrel - 250 BCG - 250 you're at 1000. then stock, parts kit, handguards, etc can easily be any amount at all and the buffer tube is 308 specific as well. This sounds about right. On the other hand, thoughts on a complete Fulton Armory?
blue109 Posted August 13, 2013 Report Posted August 13, 2013 From a budget standpoint....best thing to do is try to find a complete DPMS rifle in stock somewhere, and then upgrade over time. Otherwise...prepare to be poor :)
Robocop1051 Posted August 13, 2013 Report Posted August 13, 2013 Southeast corner about 10 miles from the US/Mexico border. Also near Fort Huachuca. Aw crap! We just had a big "meet and shoot" outside of Sierra Vista last year. I drug the wife out there for Hell Dorado that same weekend. As for the Fulton Armory, they make a great shooter. Not quite the "budget" rifle by any stretch though. If I were to make an honest suggestion.... The DPMS "308 Recon" or the Armalite "AR-10A A4 Carbine". Both rifles could be had complete for about $1,500. Very affordable and both are well built rifles.

MikedaddyH Posted August 15, 2013 Report Posted August 15, 2013 Welcome... I have a few 308 lowers left and can always get a barrel for you. BUT , Budget... No !
EasyEJL Posted August 15, 2013 Report Posted August 15, 2013 This sounds about right. On the other hand, thoughts on a complete Fulton Armory? i'll admit, I have a soft spot for this one, as its the side cocking model http://www.fulton-armory.com/fariflecal556mmupruniversalprecisionrifle-3-4-2-1-1-2-1-2-2-1-4-2-5-3.aspx
shibiwan Posted August 15, 2013 Report Posted August 15, 2013 Hi fellow AZ noob. :) From a budget standpoint....best thing to do is try to find a complete DPMS rifle in stock somewhere, and then upgrade over time. Otherwise...prepare to be poor :) Yup - that's basically what I did too. They had a good choice at Cabelas (everywhere else in AZ was backordered) and I ended up picking the CMMG MK3. -S
Rsquared Posted August 15, 2013 Report Posted August 15, 2013 Welcome aboard. Always keep at tight hold on your wallet with this crowd. <laughs>
Xkalifornian Posted August 16, 2013 Author Report Posted August 16, 2013 Thanks to all for the kind welcome. Initially I thought a build was in order, but know I'm gravitating towards a complete rifle. DPMS Recon, M&P10, then upgrade, or save my pennies and choose a nice Fulton or go for a Colt. Want to do it right the first time. Tough decision! <dontknow>
Rsquared Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 You're right. The first time is a tough decision. But don't worry.....you're first time probably won't be your last time.
