shepp
Ok so as I mentioned in my "savage" post I really like the .308 hog hunter. Pros: bolt is smooth like butter, shoulders well, fixed sights, threaded end on barrel Cons: internal box mag (4 rounds) stock is kinda flimsy Listened to a few recommendations on the mossberg MVP .308 patrol and fondled one Saturday. Pro: detachable sr25/pmag, fixed sights, front fiber optic pin on sight, threaded barrel end with flash suppressor Cons: bolt was super sloppy when open ( the gun at the store was really bad in my opinion) stock also cheap. Been doing some reading on modding the stock on the hog hunter and actually tried to join a savage forum to ask these questions but to join you need to be avid In savage history lol. I did find an thread on ar-15.com, but idk exactly what they're talking about could some one dumb it down for me? http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=6&f=5&t=383806 The 3rd post down by cyclic specifically I'm not ruling out the MVP patrol, the bolt slop really turned me off tho, I talked to bubba about his .223 and he had assured me it's a great gun and he plans on getting the .308 too, but I think if I could easily upgrade the savage I'd go that route
htbde
Another option is this. My buddys kid has one and loves it. I haven't shot it yet. http://ruger.com/products/gunsiteScoutRifle/models.html
shepp
I had an issue with my "cheapy Remington " this past fall they're on my poop list right now. Rug ar scout is cool but the savage scout is comparable and cheaper, I wish I could find one to fondle. Here's another thread I found. http://www.savageshooters.com/showthread.php?21993-Stocks-for-Savage-Hog-Hunter-
shepp
The thing that turns me off to the scout style rife is to mount a conventional style scope you must remove the rear sight, I want a bolt gun with back up sights. shepp
Could I run something like this? With a savage DBM?? http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/product.htm?pid=54810&cat=1215
planeflyer21
Cons: bolt was super sloppy when open ( the gun at the store was really bad in my opinion) stock also cheap. Ever cycle the bolt on a Lee-Enfield No.3 or 4? The real question is: does it lock up tight when closed? Not sure about the Boyd's stock for the DBM. Most of the Savages I've looked at closely have parts attached to the bottom of the receiver, via slots or tapped holes…my guess is that the Hog Hunter doesn't have them, contributing to the reduced price. Thanks Jon and yes it did lock tight, and it was smooth. Must be why that guy is running the CDI bottom metal for AICS type magazines, it looks to hold the mag in the mag well. StainTrain
Even if you could buy a 20 rounder for a bolt, it would be awkward to use due to its size. That being said, I really like these scout rifles. Edited February 19, 2014 by StainTrain
Microgunner
I'm going to parrot other's suggestion, I really like Ruger's Scout Rifle for a fast handling detachable magazine bolt rifle.
StainTrain
So far the ruger mags are reasonably priced and fairly reliable. The Rem 700 SPS and Savage 10 are pretty fast handling as well. Off the shelf, I think Savage has better stocks,. As far as detachable mags go, H-S and Accuracy International are IMO the front runners. Edited February 20, 2014 by Matt.Cross

Not only that,,I reloaed , and shot 5 more rounds. Total.9 pigs for 10 shots. Respectfully Terry

Tripledeuce
If I'd have had a semi auto 308, I probably could have shot 15-18.
StainTrain
Yeah, but nothing says you earned it like working that bolt like a banshee.
EasyEJL
I've got one of these in .223 and its a joy. its a savage, police sniper model. they made it in 308 as well. I was shooting out the x in the center of the target at 100 yards with it.
unforgiven
Nice,I'd like to see that in .300WM.
98Z5V
So far the ruger mags are reasonably priced and fairly reliable. The Rem 700 SPS and Savage 10 are pretty fast handling as well. Off the shelf, I think Savage has better stocks,. As far as detachable mags go, H-S and Accuracy International are IMO the front runners. Yep, plus Accurate Mag for US-made versions of the AI mags. Still similarly priced to the AI genuine mags, though. Just as good, every bit. In testing with the Rem 700 DBM setup, I thought I'd be able to run my Ruger GSR poly mags through it - doesn't pick up rounds in the 700. Feed lips are too thick on the GSR poly mags, and it sets the round (and mag) a little too low for the 700 bolt to grab a round. No worries, though - run the GSR poly mags in the GSR, and use the Accurate Mags in the 700. Of note, the Accurate Mag 10-rounder will actually hold 11 rounds in the mag body, and you can still lock it into the 700 DBM on a closed bolt. You can have a chambered round, plus 11 in the mag, for a total of 12 rounds of ammunition in the rifle. No extra tension on the bottom of the bolt with 11 rounds in the mag, and you can still cycle through 12 rounds just fine. <thumbsup>
shepp
Easy that looks pretty bad ass. Bottom line I'm looking for a bolt hunting rifle .308 (30-06 would be better) I like the hog hunter and the MVP patrol as started. Savage scout isn't totally ruled out either although I don't like the idea of removing the rear sights to install conventional scope mounts. Rsquared
30-06? How bout an 03' Springfield? I believe they were made to hunt also. <laughs>
shepp
Pretty popular hunting round here in wi honestly one of the only "cheaper" rifle rounds to stay on shelfs here, every Walmart and gander mountain in the state has plenty of it
shepp
Think I'm going to order a .308 MVP this week...
Tripledeuce
One thing to consider!!! Many states limit the number of rounds you can have in a hunting rifle. Cali. If I rember correctly, is 5. So is Colorado. Respectfully Terry
