Just heard on Motor Week that the 2015 Ford F-150 will have an aluminum body and bed.

This will reduce it's weight by 700 pounds.

This is a truck crowd, what do y'all think of this?

Pounds  = power, literally.  This should give it a perceived (and real) boost in power over the other 1/2 ton trucks available.  For drag racing purposes, the drop of 7lbs of static weight is the equivalent of gaining 1hp.  That equates to a 100hp gain in the vehicle, all other things being equal.

Aluminum bends in one direction.  As soon as you try to bend it back, it breaks.  I see this design costing owners ALOT of money in the long run...

My $0.02.

My  2005 F150 has a Aluminum hood , but I think thats it , the rest is steel . My wife's 2011 Mustang has a lot of Aluminum body panels on it . With the loss of weight , drivability may or may not suffer .

My next truck is that new Ram Diesel 1500 anyway. 28mpg overall with 9000 lb towing capacity., but Fords point is they have to meet Mpg guidelines, and weight equals more fuel.

I've owned two Ford pick ups and one Ford van and fuel economy wasn"t even in the equation with those trucks.

It's about time they chose a different track.

But even those gss hogs got better mileage than the Chevy 3500 454 dually we have now. That thing's lucky to get 9-10 mpg on the highway, if you baby it.
