edgecrusher Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 So the info I've gathered is my 12.5" Leonidas barrel is going to shoot at or around 2400 fps, and I'm wondering if anyone can give me an idea on optics. Right now I'm looking at Browe combat optic and Trijicon ACOG's. Here's my concern: With the ballistics, what is my best choice for sighting? Will the .308 reticle work best? Or is a 300 blk or 7.62•39 a better fit?
Robocop1051 Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 I'd go EXPS2-0 for now, maybe full HHS in time.
edgecrusher Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 I'd like a 4x magnification with a ballistic drop type reticle, I'm avoiding a red dot on this one..... I think
edgecrusher Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 It looks like it'll be close to (real close!) to ballistics for a 7.62x39 out of av16" barrel.... May try a Browe http://www.browe-inc.com/products/BCO%252d005-BROWE-Combat-Optic-7.62x39-Chevron-Reticle.html

edgecrusher Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 Nice, going to explore some more options, looking for fixed power, and it seems that caliber will perform very closely to the .308 out of the 12.5" barrel
98Z5V Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 7.62x39 might be similar to 300BLK, but 7.62x39 isn't like .308 WInchester. That matchup won't work out greatly. Tough call on what to put on the Leonidas. Gotta give that one some thought. Maybe a smaller 1-6x24, or some of the newer 1.5-8x24 scopes out there.
edgecrusher Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 (edited) According to the ballistics of the round and what a ballistic calculator for the Leonidas said it works out to be close. Maybe I did it wrong. Still looking for fixed power though. No variable power scopes preferably, that's why it was initially between the Browe and ACOG. (I'd totally rip an Elcan after fondling Ron's.... But it's nearly double in price!) Edited June 22, 2014 by edgecrusher
edgecrusher Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 And according to hornaday ballistic calculator I'm looking at 100-0 200- -5.5 300- -19.1 400- -42.1
survivalshop Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 (edited) Your saying 2400 fps from that 12.5 , what weight projectile ? Rifling twist ? Edited June 22, 2014 by survivalshop
edgecrusher Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 It was using m118, 1-10 twist, from second hand info with same barrel
Rsquared Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 They make the fixed power Elcan also dude. They're about half the price of the Spectre line. I've been knocking around the idea for yet another SBR I'm planning on. Yeah, yeah.......yet another SBR. Even I'm beginning to think that it's too many.......................................................................................................................... NAHHHHHHH!
edgecrusher Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 Have you checked out the ranging reticle for your Leonidas build? Was the Elcan sighting close for ranging? (I should have asked this first... Duh)
98Z5V Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 Brother, if you do a variable mag optic, and end up scoping the thing, run a Leupold (whichever you choose). Contact their custom shop and they'll make marked turrets that match your round/projo weight/mv/drop over distance. <thumbsup>

98Z5V Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 He wants the Mk8, of course.... and we should encourage that! DSG has the Mark 8 CQBSS for HALF PRICE. 1.1-8x24, that damn thing is NICE!
Rsquared Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 Didn't know that they had a different reticle for the Elcan.
edgecrusher Posted June 23, 2014 Author Report Posted June 23, 2014 Didn't know that they had a different reticle for the Elcan. There's a 7.62 and a 5.56 version
Rsquared Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 Oh (slapping myself). I did know that. That's why I had to wait a couple days as my local pusher got the 7.62 flavored one. It ain't easy being stupid.
edgecrusher Posted June 23, 2014 Author Report Posted June 23, 2014 Lol, must be drinking too much water! Aaaaand?
unforgiven Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 Got me looking at those Raytheon products, great product line. <thumbsup>
