cwikjr
I really like my last build except that it's pretty heavy... So going to see if I can make this one a bit lighter... Parts as follows... DPMS Flat top upper. 20 inch DPMS Light weight hunter barrel... Quintin Defense 80% lower... A2 Stock with .308 buffer and spring... DPMS LPK... Still need a carrier group and hand guards or ff rail... Going to go with a classic style look with a fixed FSB and Carry Handle... Either a regular A2 or a set of A1 triangle hand guards... Looking at the PRI carbon fiber Delta FF Tube... I like it a lot but it's kind of pricy... I have one of the DPMS A3 flat top uppers with the dust cover and forward assist for use with the carry handle... Should I use a F marked FSB or a standard A2 FSB??? I'll post pics when I get some of it put together...
blue109
if you need a visual of how a delta looks with a carry handle and FSB... the PRI tubes aren't heavy, but far from the lightest option.
edgecrusher
If you are building light weight, why 20"?
98Z5V
Should I use a F marked FSB or a standard A2 FSB??? F-marked FSB is for a carbine gas system, to give it the same adjustability as a rifle-length gas system. F-marked FSB wouldn't do any good in this instance, with a 20" barreled-weapon. washguy
If you are building light weight, why 20"? Exactly ! and why an a2 type buttstock with that heavy azz rifle buffer?.....you wont save crap for weight :) Wash
blue109
and why an a2 type buttstock with that heavy azz rifle buffer?.....you wont save crap for weight :) Wash the second he puts a carbine extension on there everyone will tell him to get a heavy buffer. :D
cwikjr
I'm going with the 20 inch barrel for balance... My 20 inch .556 AR's seem to balance better than carbines... Going with standard hand guards and a taper pinned FSB... Wish some one made a fixed carry handle upper with A2 sights for the LR-308 never have liked flat tops... I received the barrel Monday it's pretty nice looks like it has a chrome lined bore and chamber... I'll try to get som pics of the parts pile before I start putting it togeather been super busy with 3 jobs,,,
unforgiven
RRA has this : http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=439 not fixed but it is for .308/7.62.
cwikjr
All the parts are in now to get the barrel threaded and put it togeather... It's a lot lighter than my first build when i mocked it up with my other lower... And I have to wait for my lower to be engraved can't wait to get it back... Here are pictures of the parts pile and the mock up...
cwikjr
Well it's pretty much a done deal... Made A1 hand guards fit... Just need a carry handle to complete the retro look...

cwikjr
That's wicked I love it! Thanks!!! It shoots like a laser!!! Sports a vintage AimPoint 5000 now I may skip the carry handle... Here are pics of my receiver engravings i forgot to post them... Yep I ripped off the old ArmaLite logo... cwikjr
I gave it the tundra test last weekend... Temps here were -40 so i put the rifle in my trunk for a couple days to chill it out... Went out to our range and ran 100 rounds thorough it when it was a warmer -20... Functioned flawless my carrier group was dripping wet with Mobile 1 and seemed to like the extreme cold... Very happy with this build!!! Now I'm going to have to do a shorty!!! pewpew.308
14.5 barrel makes it light. Edited March 7, 2015 by pewpew.
guruofhotrod
RRA has this : http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=439 not fixed but it is for .308/7.62. Another option that is less expensive is the DPMS model - JSE has a good price: http://www.jsesurplus.com/dpmsdetachablecarryhandlewitha2rearsightlr-308.aspx Nice looking build! <thumbsup> Edited March 7, 2015 by guruofhotrod

cwikjr
That's nice looking brother! I like the retro theme. Makes me want to be a copycat. :) Final weight? Haven't weighed it... It seems to weigh about as much as my AR-15A2... Could have cut the barrel to 16 or 18 shave some weight... But I like it just the way it turned out... Wish I had better machine tools I'd whip out a A2 fixed carry handle upper for the LR-308 style lowers...
AdamO
It would be pretty sweet to replicate one of these!! https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=UCmHxieQduE What I want to know is how. Armalite was getting that thing to under 6 lbs in the first place!! Thats a lofty goal even for an AR15! Armalite was getting that thing to under 6 lbs in the first place!! Thats a lofty goal even for an AR15! I think Chuck over at Gunlab is doing a Sudan Version of the AR10 and a AR-16... If I remember right the early Hollywood ArmaLites had a thin steel barrel wrapped in fiberglass... Those failed in the 56 rifle trials... I don't think the Dutch AR-10's weighed in at 6lbs... cantshootafish
I'm gonna try a polymer lower from Tennessee Arms to lighten my next build. They will be available in 4 weeks or so. Only $75 to buy it now. I'm still not sure which free floating forend would be the lightest yet though.
