  1. Welcome Charlie! Good to have another Armalite Guy on board!
  2. BS but not out of the ordinary....might also be a bit of a lawyer thing.
  3. Reamers are out! I can't pay more for an assortment of reamers than I paid for the barrel, this is just a hobby.....sorta. I ordered regular HSS bits figuring I'd go real slow one size at a time with lots of lube, i figured I'd just bring the portable vise and cordless drill to the range with me.....if I don't decide to just send it back to X-Caliber and let them sort it out, tempting but I'd like to gain the experience myself plus I'd be stuck with whatever I tell them or whatever they decide. This is going to turn into an expensive build if I figure in tooling and then test fire ammo.......
  4. Now X-Caliber has offered to take the whole upper in and diagnose the issue, I put the emails quotes in the X-caliber barrels thread. Part of me wants to do this on my own for experience but then I worry I'll break a bit off per my usual luck. They won't give out the port size they use but mentioned this was a first for them. I couldn't get the bits here in town so I ordered a set, gives me a little time to think about the options.............
  5. Had one laying around in case of a squib load. Now it looks like X-Caliber may want the whole upper to diagnose the issue...not sure what to do now!
  6. I contacted Justin about my under-gassed issue on the Matrix build. They will not give out any port sizes but he offered to take the whole upper in and diagnose the issue. "-What buffer system are you running? I am curious as to what might be happening since this is a first, but drill bits do get dull and maybe it is a little small? I will send you a shipping label for it?" "I would be happy to get that back from you to check it. We do test our barrels before we do gas port sizes and make sure it works with carbine and rifle buffer systems and we do not give out the gas port sizes as those are valuable industry secrets so when people ask we do not answer the question of gas port size." "-It could be the barrel but I might be able to diagnose it better with all your stuff in it." I'm torn now, send it in or drill it out myself??????? I had to order a set of bits as nobody had them here in town.
  7. A number 43 bit is listed as .089" but I'm looking for .1095"? I checked the present size with bits I have .077" fits, .083" does not fit. I'll get set up with the sizes between .089" to the largest.1095" and work my way up from the smaller till it functions.....I hope!
  8. Hemi has it right, I've done a few and this is the best system to use, never got a call-back, there still happy 15 years latter. The names can change but that is the system or method to use! I always hated taking out those old tile systems with the thick, hard ass concrete....no room to really swing the sledge!
  9. Looks like I need to go to a 7/64 (.1094") as the Fulton 16 inch rifle length gas port is .1095". The 7/64 is closer to that than any numbered bit. I think I'll use the dowel and set it up in the drill press so I can 100% control the depth. I've got another comp day tomorrow so I hope to get it done and try a few rounds. Thanks Guys!
  10. Looks like a 7/64 (.1094) gets me a match for the Fulton Armory rifle length gas system on a 16 incher(.1095). I've got that already. I think I'll set up in a drill press so I can control the depth for sure! Hope this works, she felt smooth the way it was but then that was without much buffer or carrier movement:)
  11. never mind.......
  12. What type barrel is that port size on? I have a 16 inch rifle gas that I think needs more umph.
  13. What do I need for tools and bits to drill out an undersized gas port? Any specifics I should look for on the bits or will any decent quality bits work? Once drilled is there a deburring procedure or can I just send a few rounds through to smooth it out?
  14. That is exactly what came to mind as I checked everything over. How do I go about measuring my port size, what tools would I use? If I find it undersized then I should be able to just drill it out larger, correct? Think I'll email Ex-Caliber with the issue and see what they say.........
  15. It's not as fast as I can send them or as fast as I can pull the trigger, you edit the quote to suit your point, it was "send them as fast as I can get back on target", there is a difference. Don't care about sub-moa at 800 yards but I can put them through a drivers side car window at 800 yards all day long. Many many sub MOA rifles at 200 yards, if the rifle won't do that I don't want to waste the space for it. I do like the looks of that fluted barrel, odds are I will have one on my next build. I don't worry about zombies, you shouldn't either as they only eat brains. I seldom hunt with an AR rifle, my AR's are for defending myself and family from a tyrannical government. You seem to dislike the forum here but yet you keep coming back WHY?
  16. Whatever it is it does seem to work well on carbon...........
  17. First 40 rounds downrange, short-strokes EVERY time, never locks back on the empty mag unless I do it manually..........sorry for the bad phone pics; I did my break-in routine for all 40 rounds, cleaned with No 9 and a brush letting it soak for several minutes then dry patches till they came out clean, then a patch soaked in gun juice with HBN then a couple clean patches before firing again. First 20 were ZQI M80 clone ammo, first few rounds didn't hardly budge the BCG then it started to eject 2/3rds of them but wouldn't pick up the next round. This pattern continued with 20 rounds of Freedom Munitions remanufactured 175gr. match. I usually don't concern myself with accuracy at this stage but the last 20 put in one of the better break-in groups I've experienced, 20 rounds at 50 yards with the target flopping around in the wind on a left over political yard sign, I didn't really put any effort into it till half way through the box and I realized it might be a tight 20 rounder; I think this may be a good barrel for me but it won't do me any good if I can't get the function issue solved. I took the handguard off and looked for any gas leaks, everything was clean. No signs of any unusual wear inside or on the BCG. The gas block is still lined up where it was right on the pencil marks. I'm thinking I need more gas or less buffer/spring. Advice?????????/ The wilson BCG cleaned up real easy between the coating and the heavy dose of lube and grease. I did notice some cratering on the primers but no flat like a heavy pressure load would be, otherwise the cases that did get ejected looked good, seemed like I just read something about how this issue can relate to gas load but I don't remember where it was now; I'm at a loss......
  18. I already ordered a plug, Breaststroker must have gotten to me subliminally, I'll save .075 oz. with the plug ;)
  19. Just tried to plug in the last part, a "308 AR" specific forward assist that advertised a "longer pawl". It did assist the bolt by hitting the shoulder but it also prevented the bolt from moving back past it....... Think I'll just put a plug in it but for now it is going to get test fired without filling the hole, gotta get to the range today!
  20. I was laying tile in the kitchen of a church we were building, listened to the events on the radio while I worked. Lots of local church members showed up for prayer and fellowship. My thoughts were mostly on relatives that I knew would be in harm's way soon. Took longer than I thought but they kicked ass when the time came!
  21. Sounded like he offered to bet......I know what he is trying to say but he needs to make his context clear.....like you so clearly explained to him. Technically he offered a bet on a known loser, I took that bet...what do I win????????
  22. This one has GEN II in the model name; http://masterpiecearms.com/shop/mpar556-rifle-gen-ii-black/ There is a Barrett REC7 Gen II; http://www.rifleshootermag.com/rifles/ar-15/barrett-rec7-gen-ii-review/ Kel-Tec SUB-2000 GENII http://www.range365.com/rifle-test-kel-tec-sub-2000-gen-2 Sig calls their second try at making the 716 function reliably a "GEN II" DPMS doesn't have a thing to do with any of these....."GEN II" is nothing but a way for marketers to let people know the weapon in not the same crap that "GEN I" was but is new and improved blah blah blah......about as pertinent as the weight of an AR rifle without sights and a dust cover.
  23. I must have a bad washer then, I thought I remembered getting 180 out of the one that came on my Flaming Pig. I wasn't sure if the small amount of shoulder on the barrel would make a difference to a crush washer, the thicker portion of the washer does not have anything to bear on. Is a good crush washer better than the shim system?
  24. And not if you vote for a Paul..........
  25. For .5 oz. you could put a dust cover on it...............much more usable in the real world with a dust cover. https://www.primaryarms.com/Strike_Industries_Enhanced_308_Ultimate_Dust_Cove_p/si-ar-udc-e-308-03-bk.htm
