YA, a home depot tap is definitely a no-no, they are ok at best for cleaning up threads and getting by, once you use a high quality ground hss tap you will know the difference and probably throw the others away.

As imschur stated spiral point and forming taps, make sure you use a machine shop quality tap made of HSS, NOT a tap out of a tap and die set. Try to avoid anything with more than 2 flutes they are just waiting to break off. Call me stupid but what the hell is making this line !

They put enough fear into everyone, and ordered a poop load of ammo (orders that have priority over ours bought with our money),in order to dry it up for a long time, now online ordering, they are still getting gun control just not the full frontal assault we expected. Hell its still so hard to get ammo I just quit shooting my stuff, my buddies all called me hoarders but they have been out for 9 months plus, I still have plenty but with more scare tactics on the horizon I don't want to deplete my stockpile anymore. This problem has been a long time coming, NO ONE is learning manuals anymore, they (kids entering the industry) all want to start at the top, earn top dollar and just want to push buttons, the best cnc guys are usually guys that have run manuals for a long time first, and there aren't that many youg adults that want that type of job anyway because the country as a whole has been preaching that they must go to college for way too long. Now there is a generation of college graduates with useless degrees that can't find jobs. Everyone is just not cut out to go to college, some are just better suited and or have the natural ability to do the vocational jobs that are needing filled now. No offense intended to anyone but there is a big difference between a cnc operator and a cnc machinist, I am sure there are a few of us here that understand what I mean.

Could be a shaving that didn't get blown out of it in manufacture, or maybe the hole didn't get tapped deep enough, both easy fixes.

I still haven't made it to the range, it's hotter than the surface of the sun here now, maybe I will go early one morning, I'm too damned fat for this climate!

I have been living in my house since 94 and the only things I have hired out were the roof and the well pump. My late 1960's era maytags are super easy to work on. The only things I don't do automotive are rebuilding automatic transmissions, and anything on these new vehicles that involves removing the entire dashboard, I would rather take a ass kicking than spend that much time standing on my head swearing at a car!

I would say that had to be well below average.

Ya, sounds like a pretty shitty job! With me it's dealing with customers in general. Do you know how to tell when a customer is lying? Their lips are moving! One can also substitute the word "liberal" for "customer".

Well I didn't get any replies so I just went ahead and did it, tapped it from the side instead of the front and used a #10-32, not sure when I can go to the range but will report back.
