  1. Hi 98Z5V,

I read and followed some of your comments and threads on AR10/LR308 platform with regard to Springs and Buffers with great interest.

I finally built my LR308 - Not Armalite - with Aero Precision Upper and Lower parts. Aero Precision BCG, rifle gas tube and gas block - along with their spring kits. Had to scrounge a little for the parts in this day and age. The barrel is a Ballistics Advantage 20" with .750 gas block (non-adjustable), Rifle gas tube and 1:10 twist. I understood that Ballistic Advantage makes barrel for Aero Precision. It has a Carbine Collapsible stock with standard 7' Mil-spec buffer tube.

When I went out to "break-in" the barrel several things happened. Federal 168gr ammo worked fine. My re-loads with Federal/Winchester brass - 165gr BTSP - IMR 4046 - CCI 200 primers worked fine. Ejection placement was at the 3 to 4 O'clock position. Wolf steel case ammo not so much. Ejection placement was at the 1 or 2 O'clock position.

The buffer weighed in at 3.75oz. and with a no named brand spring. Later replaced the spring with a Aero Precision spring (one coil longer than the no name brand) with the same results. The bolt would hold back on the brass ammo not the steel case ammo. I was thinking that "maybe" it was under gassed.

Based on several of your comments and reviews - I'm going with a Sprinco Orange buffer spring and a heavier buffer. I have a Odin adjustable buffer maxed out to 4.65oz. weight. Will this weight be enough in your opinion??

I will take the rifle out as soon as the weather gets a little warmer here in Michigan. I will also take measurements of the gas block hole on the barrel and look at the gas tube length to be sure everything is in spec there based on your comments and experience. I believe it is, but will double check... I also realize that some rifles do not like certain ammo... Maybe that is the case with the steel case stuff. I really do not know. The steel case shoots fine in my .308 Bolt rifle... I like it because it is cheap, but you get what you pay for...

    Thanks for your time...

Stick with that Odin adjustable for a minute, and see how this thing does at 4.65oz.  Watch it closely, and see how it operates.  IMHO, that 0.8oz too light - and I know that doesn't seem like much.  But, look at the weight steps in buffers.  AR15 Carbine 3.0oz, H1 3.8oz, H2 4.6oz, H3 5.4oz...    Those are 0.8oz steps in each buffer weight progression.

Let's see if it shoots like this.  I'm pretty sure it'll shoot, function, and lock a BCG back on an empty mag - but it's gonna be doing it with some force.  I think the 5.4oz buffer would tame that recoil cycle a little.  Try this gun like this, and let's see what's going on...

      Thanks 98Z5V

I hope your shooting and competition went well. At least that is what I thought I read you were unpacking from...

I took apart the "old" 3.75oz buffer. Like you have stated in many threads - it was an Alum body with 2 - Tungsten weights. I did weigh them and they are 1.45oz each... I'm going to place one of them in the Odin buffer along with the other Tungsten weight in there for a total of 5.45oz... I will confirm those numbers on assembly... That should be enough Ass for the Mass!

I will also receive my Orange spring from Springco today. That will also go into the rifle today.

The only other thing I need to do is measure the Gas Port on the Ballistics Advantage 20inch barrel. I'm going to guess it is smaller than .093 to .096. If that is the case, I will drill it out per your recommendations on other threads. That should get the rifle in a "Balanced" position..  I will go out and shoot the rifle this weekend. It might get into the 40's here in Michigan. It is no fun shooting in freezing weather. Can't keep the scope on target. To much shakin' going on...   LOL

I can let you know how things are going via this messaging. You can take what ever you want and share it if you'd like. It just confirms EVERYTHING you have been telling people. I can't thank you enough for all the things you have learned and shared with others on this forum. It is just too bad people can't read, comprehend or listen to others in the know. Too many morons or "I know better than you" folks around or as you like to say (Jackasses).  LOL

      Thanks again,

      Allen
