It can definitely be done, and has been done. Rifle gas on a 16" 5.56 barrel is the true original Dissipator. In the Viet Nam era, it was the M655. It's just hard to get right. "Fake" Dissipators are everywhere, and use a midlength or carbine gas system, hidden under the handguard:

On a rifle-gas 16" .308 barrel?!!? That's too damn small. That needs to go up to about 0.100" to cycle. Shiit, I just gave away proprietary information.

It certainly was you, with your comments. I'm positive of that. You built one AR15, and you think you're en fuego, so you decide to do an 80% .308 AR platform, and you can't read the product description to determine what fucking pattern it is. After that, you talk shiit to people here. You're gonna be fun. For a little while anyway.

Gotta know what state they're in, so I can check my state laws about shipping firearms here, from that state.

Here's one, in this thread: Pics are directly uploaded into the thread straight from the hard drive, but others can't see them. That's an issue. They're not hosted somewhere else and linked - they're attached to the post directly from the hard drive... Page 4.

X-Caliber Barrel & MFG, Anyone know about these?

Odd - the pics are directly uploaded into the thread, straight from the hard drive. No links - straight uploads. Drew needs to look at that, and bitch-slap, or at least "strong pimp hand" the people setting up the new board here. I'll go upload the shiit to a host and link the bastards... Thank God for Photobucket, because Invision Powerboard certainly can't get it done - here are the pics from the post I made above... -

There was nothing with that video that was a departure from the norm, for Noveske. That's the point. They didn't "suddenly decide to make an advertisement like that" - they've always done that. If you've never noticed that kind of advertising from them before - then you weren't paying any attention to anything Noveske. Don't hate Noveske for that video. Hate Noveske because you never knew what Noveske was about. Until you saw that video... -
I like the Vagisil. Use it at work. Everytime some dude starts cryin' again about this or that, he gets smeared down. Doesn't take but about 5 minutes and he's back to work again, mouth shut. I once used Vagisil as an insult here. In the same post, I just told the guy to shut his cockholster. I got warned for it. With the warning (from Drew) came the comment, "I've never seen that used as an insult before, and I laughed my a$$ off about it! Here's your warning..."

They always have made a damn fine rifle - one of the very best in terms of quality and attention to detail. Their hardware is right up at the top of the heap, in terms of manufacturers. Their barrels are fucking BADASS. That comes from John Noveske's time at Pac-Nor, when he worked there, before he made his own company. Johnny quote: I like mine, and wouldn't kick it out of bed - for nothin'! -

I initially had an issue on an AP set with the AP carbine recoil system - too much bolt travel, rearward. It was effing up the recoil stroke, and dropping rounds. I immediately checked how far the bolt face was traveling back, beyond the bolt catch, and it was a pretty good distance - too much. So, just like AR pistol caliber builds, on bolt carriers that don't have a true "bolt" that reciprocates - there's too much rearward travel. You stack $1.75 in quarters in those bastards, and they function fine. Or, you buy an expensive buffer that's exactly $1.75 longer, and it functions fine. That special buffer is a damn bit more expensive than $1.75, too. On my initial AP set run-in, I had those malfunctions. I noticed the additional backtravel, and measured the internal depth of the extension, the spring, and the buffer length. The spring and buffer were good, but the extension measured out at 7.100" internal depth, and should have been 7.000" internal depth. So, working with an extension that's 0.100" too long, internally. I think I stacked up $0.75 or a dollar, and shot it again - problem solved. I think I went with a buck, first, and dropped it to 75 cents. At any rate, I didn't like that solution, got pissed off, and ordered a complete Armalite AR-10 carbine recoil system for it - ran that thing like a scalded dog. Not a hiccup. I was gonna throw the AP extension in the trash, but held onto it - I ended up putting it in the lightweight 5.56 rifle, as a temp, until I can get the right parts for that rifle. When assembling that one, I noticed that the extension barely made contact with the buffer retainer, so I really started looking at it. I tried to put it another turn in, and it wouldn't go - hit the lip on the bottom of the extension against the retainer. Pulled it, notched it, reinstalled it another turn - and that thing runs like a champ now, too, with that extension installed on it. So, you're working with an additional 0.100" in internal depth, plus there's 0.050" between threads on the extension/lower receiver, so you're out another 0.150" more than having the right parts made the right way. That additional 0.150" will cause the back of the bolt carrier to strike the lower receiver, and fuk your recoil impulse/recoil cycle all up - and possibly cause extraction/ejection problems. Did on mine. This is what it does to your lower receiver... In the pics below, you can clearly see that the bolt carrier struck the lower solid in all four corners, and did it a few times. After solving this problem, there haven't been anymore problems. That's definitely enough contact to completely fuk the recoil cycle all up, and cause some other cycling issues. -
The only barrel I've purchased from them was the 8" 300BLK barrel, and it shoots well. Had to clean up a burr in the gas port hole, but for what I paid for it, that was easy.

People here shouldn't be hatin' on Noveske for this video. It's purely Noveske, through and through. If you didn't know that, then you didn't know Noveske. -

The guys that don't understand this marketing by Noveske - just don't understand Noveske. After John passed away, Sheri put up a good video, and had a beer for him. Because that's the way he'd want it. It was the SHOT 2013 vid, and it's since been pulled. EDIT - just for clarification, Sheri is no longer there. She's moved here: http://www.erathr3.com/collections/long-guns http://soldiersystems.net/2014/08/08/erathr3-just-erathr3/ -
That's not the address that you gave them, though... right?...

I'm just doing my part to make sure you come out here in Oct... lmao...

My issue with the AP .308AR receiver extension parts was with the extension. It's got a lip on the bottom, and that lip needs notched for the buffer retainer. If you don't notch it, you're hitting the buffer retainer - and the tube needs to go in one more full turn. For emphasis - THE TUBE NEEDS TO GO IN ONE MORE FULL TURN. It must, or it's not gonna function correctly. Mine was giving me fits, and didn't measure right - you can get around the extra 0.100" in depth and still have a running rifle. But only if you notch that bottom lip and turn the receiver extension in one more full turn. Once I notched it and screwed the damn thing in, no more issues. I know I mentioned that enough to get the attention of the AP owners... lmao... JT, perform that task and function test the rifle again, before you send it in, brother. Now... where was that a$shole that said people should just shut up and contribute, or say nothing. Where's that fucker at... -
Jacob, don't let her know you're building it - and she can shoot mine when you come out in Oct... See if she like it, without asking questions that would give away your plans...

That's one of the songs from the Quentin Tarantino movie Death Proof. The song definitely fits for some hot, badass women - if you know why it's used. Johnny would approve of that vid, completely. -
^^^ Yep. That's exactly what I put on my little lightweight. Also, one on the Gunsite Scout Rifle, and it's still alive. One more on the 45-70, just to see if it will live, and it's at 150 rounds through it so far. Tough red dot. (and one on Pinky, one on the M1 Carbine, one on the AR45 and one the 9mm, one on several different other 5.56 guns...) ^^^ I think the one on the 9mm is a Bushnell TRS25... The PA red dot is a tough bastard...

Picked up on this in the X-Caliber thread: On a 5.56 rifle, 16" barrels with rifle gas don't do as well as on the .308 platform - the .308 Win round just has the capability of producing ALOT of gas. Not so much with 5.56. A 5.56 16" barrel with midlength gas will be shooting like a powder puff, with a decent comp on it. Gas port diameter for that config should be around 0.080" diameter. Even with a standard carbine buffer, she's be just fine. If she wanted a little more taken out of it, the H1 buffer would be the ticket. You go rifle length on the gas system, and you're gonna need more handguard to get to the gas block that's another 3" further down the barrel, over a midlength system. Rifle system would also push the weight of the gas block that much further forward, increasing swing weight - might not be alot, but it's something, and perception is reality... My $0.02...

1, I do get it - you didn't state anything about that, either. 2. Anything that lets you acquire the target, in whatever manner you so choose. There are lightweight sights out there. 3. Not acting like a child at all. I've read your BS elsewhere, and see how you are. Trying to limit that from happening here. "...you think all rifles should be listed with a scope weight" - I never said anything like that, not in the least. 4. I doubt that. Mortar is on video and show me. I'm glad your brother is a LEO - I'm not. I din't give a shiit if you've lost any respect for me, either. Not one shiit. 5. We could always do with one less... 6. You don't know a damn thing about my "shooting style," as you say. Not one thing. 7. Yes, and yes. Just so YOU know, I can keep sub-MOA groups all the way to 800 yards, in more than one caliber.
-
You're a good man. Not doubting you, but I just had to check. Rock on, wildman! lmfao!
-
Nah man - breastman is using that in a completely different context, though he might not even understand what he's posting... Completely. He's specifically talking about the fact that he made a "Gen I" .308AR a certain weight - and he made sure to say it wasn't a "Gen II" that he was building, with that weight... For .308ARs, I'll say it again, there is only one "Gen II," that that comes from the specific, patented design that DPMS is producing. There really is not a "Gen I" type .308 AR, just because DPMS decided to make a "Gen II." There are just .308ARs out there. Breastman didn't address my comment about that, did he... Hmmm...
