Hello all! This is my first post on this board. I'm totally new to AR's and am interested in possibly building an AR-10 or 308AR for large game hunting and target shooting purposes. I don't plan on making any purchases in the near future as I'd like to do as much research as possible. I know I could purchase a complete AR-10 / 308AR off the shelf, but the more I read about the flexibility of the AR platform, the more interested I am in learning the platform and building one myself. I see there are many new members who seem to be in a similar boat, so I'm looking forward to learning alot from the folks on this site!

Very first, you need to study up on New Jersey firearms law.  That will guide your build more than you realize, because there are some jacked up gun laws in New Jersey.

Welcome aboard.

Jeez ya think??!! LOL!! Yes, before I go off the wall like a kid with an erector set on Christmas morning, I know whatever I build can't have "scary" features like collapsible stocks and bayonet lugs. Indeed I'll nail down what makes a NJ compliant firearm.

OP, lots of reading to do, if you're not already familiar with the NJ Assault Weapons Ban, and it's current laws.  Info below:

Your most valuable resource, no schit, will be right here:

No kidding man - do your homework first.  You're in one of those states where you can seemingly "built something innocent," only to find out that you've just committed a state felony...  NJ is some scary schit...

...You're allowed to own guns in NJ?

Actually, the answer is NO!  Folks often say it's easiest to start with the statement "all guns are Illegal in NJ"... And then sprinkle in the few exceptions where it’s actually legal to possess guns in NJ, such as while at home, while at a gun range, while hunting, while driving to and from said gun range or hunting grounds.

Welcome from AZ !

Still building that AR or are you moving to Penn State.

Haha!!  The funny thing is I'm only about 20 minutes from PA.  All my family is in NJ and I've lived and worked here all my life, but I've certainly thought of jumpping the border for many reasons.. not just for its more friendly gun laws.

Welcome from Georgia, one of the easiest states to own a gun in. I don't see how you guys put up with such strict gun laws in some of those lefty states. You're a better man than I am.
