I've heard a few guys talk about building a 6.5 cm but am I the only one building a 260 rem? lol. maybe I missed the band wagon and ended up hitching a ride on a unicycle instead. haha.

According to Todd you are ahead of the curve. The 260 is more capable by about 100fps but the 6.5 has a better factory ammo selection. It looks like that may be changing though with more big name competitors using the 260, those sponsors need to sell new kit so you can count on ever changing fads.

I like the idea that was brought up about two different Uppers , one for Hunting & one for long range , including Glass .

I watched half of that video , thinking I was going to learn something , but its nothing new that , a lighter , faster shooting Bullet is going to shoot , flatter then a larger heavier Bullet .

guess I will have to do some reading up on the 260 also, see how available the ammo is compared to the 6.5 cm, the ballistics? and bullets for hunting and long range targets. might just get the DPMS light weight hunter with the carbon hand guard and then maybe later on a carbon wrapped barrel in either 6.5 or 260 to satisfy my long range pursuit . ARTrooper and Shepp  I am from east central Wisconsin foot of the lake, where we hold the Walleye tournament, (hint).   just thought I would let you know and also Go Packers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was looking into Carbon hand guards, then I stopped into Midwest industries and found out they're metal guards are about the same weight or a touch lighter. Although carbon fiber is soooo much more sexy.

RC     H  still has some .260 nexgen units available with 18" barrel, upper, and bcg which then makes your .260 weigh in at bout  6 1/2 pounds without optics .Thats what I was gonna do,but the ammo is the holdback for me...(great ballistics if you reload) ...so it looks like another .308 in the works of the nexgen variety                  Wash

RRS, great sniper's hide article. I hadn't read that one yet. I completely agree with everything said there. I have seen that it is easier and cheaper to find better factory ammo with 6.5 cm than it is with .260 rem. but for the person who reloads frequently or is good at it (not saying I am yet. lol.), .260 is better for reloading not just because of the better brass available, but because of the amount of brass available in the .308 family that can be necked up or down to .260 rem.

besides that, I would say on the range they are so close I would consider it equal.

the thing I would semi-disagree with is the fact that .260 can be longer create problems for mags. while this can be true because the case length of the .260 is slightly longer, most people I know set the actual bullet back farther in the case than the 6.5 cm and actually making the .260 slightly shorter (not really noticeable by the naked eye though). so I don't see this to be a problem unless you are one of the people loading .260 rem a little longer.

I really like how that article talked about 18 inch barrels. most frequently you hear people saying you need 22-26 in barrels for these 6.5mm calibers and they turn people off of the shorter 16-20 inch barrels. well I think we all here know the benefits of barrel length, more velocity being the main one. but as can be seen in the video at the bottom of the article, a 6.5mm cartridge can be accurate with a 18in barrel even out to 1250 yards! I have even read an article about a guy building a bolt gun in 6.5 cm with a 16 in barrel that still performed amazing.

so bring on the short barrel 6.5s!

RRS, as for the .308 vs 6.5 vs 6mm video, it's a great video. I have thought much about a 6mm as I have taken many deer with .243 win and love the gun and its accuracy. but I choose 6.5mm because it had more energy which I use for taking long shots at deer. the last 2 years I have only been hunting with my .243 because I broke my collarbone in a bad motorcycle accident, and last year I shot the biggest buck I have ever shot with it... but even though it was a lung shot and the deer dropped instantly and was on his back, he got up and walked away. I let him bed down for about an hour and then tracked him for over 3 and a half hours and lost the blood trail across the field as the midday sun melted the half inch of snow we got the night before opening morning. it wasn't a horribly long shot that someone would consider unethical and I have taken many deer at that range (including 30 minutes before because the big boy walked up on the deer and stood looking at his body where I dropped it before I shot and hit him also.) So I decided that even though .243 is one of the best rounds out there for long range shooting and hunting small to medium game, I really wanted something with a little more energy behind it that I could also take a black bear with.

If I was just shooting paper or steel, 6mm would be my bullet of choice. Although might build a bolt gun in 26 nosler, would be a great hunting round but it is a 6mm bullet in a 30-06 case basically.

rcnut, glad to see another local, haven't been that way in ages, I live west of Castle Rock lake

grrrrr. still cant quote you guys, sorry. the price of living in the middle of nowhere with crap internet.

@ARTrooper try doing that and see if it works.

also I agree with the .243 and hunting a guy I hunted with used one and finally went back to his 30-06 after we got sick of tracking deer miles literally. One his son shot we never did find a hole in it, and it took us 3 hours to find it. Not that I've shot a ton of deer but everyone has dropped or been easy to track all with either a 30-06 or .308. My buddy double lunged a deer once with his 30-06 the blood trail went 600 yards, I don't think there was a drop of blood left in the deer when we found it?!? I like bigger holes in my game never wasted any meat pre-say not as much as not finding a whole animal

something happened and I was able to quote. yay! lol.

anywho... the problem with 30-06 is to many people use to big of bullets and destroy more meat than needed. .308 I can't say i ever had any problems either shooting to big or to small a whole, always left em dead within a decent distance of the shot.

That complaint about modern bullets is prevalent on forums pertaining to old timey firearm actions.  Time and time again you see people converted to, then preach about the virtues of hard cast "boolits".

"Eat up to the hole" with lots of DRT (Dead Right There) testamonies.

Few things suck worse than having to trace out a dozen or more bonded bullet fragments and then chuck the damaged meat.

planeflyer, yeah I had a .243 hornady load for deer enter in a deer one time and then hit the far shoulder blade and then bounce back and came out on the same side the entrance wound was and created a huge hole. was pulling fragments out of that side, good news was the other side was perfect. lol.

mrmackc... last night was a fluke. not letting me quote again this morning. the things I try and quote just keep loading and loading, but never pop up. I have satellite internet since I am so far in the middle of nowhere and it sucks, in the middle of the night it is better because less people are using it.

I have excede internet. was the best in the area. I am literally surrounded by thousands of acres of state land on 3 sides of me, so I'm about in the boonies as I can get. power just flickered off 10 min ago, and that is common out here. the bears and wolves run things out here, and apparently some cougars have been spotted recently.

When we moved out here in 89 we had three stations and it took a 72' antenna and a booster, no internet. then in the 90s we got DirectTV or whatever it was called. cost $700 for a box and a mini dish. neighbors had a 10 or 12' dish. we got a land line in 95, dial up internet and later DSN internet, other choice is Hughs or DVDs. I had the same probs with dial up. We are out on a Promontory, lake on 3 sides, one road in same road out. 40 miles either direction to a McDonalds, Walmart. actually it is pretty nice and peaceful.

yeah, I love the peace and quiet and privacy that comes with it. but everything good comes with a price. lol.

Ya us too,in fact I live on top of this mountain so we get 4G thank God, use our cell as our router cause no internet other than Hughes which is slow, limited, and expensive, the data on the cell in only expensive but fairly quick and have a lot of it as a result...

We have the wolf thing here too, sucks, we're rectifying the political reintroduction nonsense though slowly but surely, a popular bumper sticker around here is "smoke a pack", and they don't mean Marlboro's!
