Rifle Vs. Carbine buffer system: is one better than the other?

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of selecting my rifle, whether it be a complete rifle or parts... is there a functional/reliability advantage of going with a rifle system vs. a carbine system?

I prefer the A2/fixed stock, so would prefer that, but if there is a better reason to go with a Carbine system, I'll do that and find a compatible stock that I like.

Collapsible stocks are good if you have Body Armor on or other large outer clothing/gear , not to mention fitment of stock for shorter arm people .

That part I understand... the LOP, weight etc. That's all pretty straight forward.

I'm just wondering if there is any difference as far as felt recoil, reliability etc... my only two AR builds were both 20 something years ago and I used A2 stocks because that's what I used in the Marines. I've handled and fired a couple of carbines since, but few and far between so nothing to compare. I've only handled and not fired a 308 AR.

I guess to clarify, with an 18" mid length upper, what differences would I expect to experience with say, an M4 type carbine lower vs. an A2 type rifle lower, with all other factors being equal?

Another advantage the Carbine Stock Buffer system gives you is changeability of different weight Buffers for Tuning & felt recoil . Understand there are many factors to felt recoil ,but having the ability to change Buffer weights , that are readily available with out a custom made Buffer , is helpful .

Of course that changes with the 308AR , depending what 308AR Buffer system is in the Carbine stock .

It may sound complicated , but its not , basically ( we have a Pinned Thread on buffer systems) Armalite AR 10 uses a different system the the DPMS based system . AR 10 uses a longer Receiver Extension then the AR 15 Carbine Receiver Extension , their 308 Buffer Spring & an H2 AR 15 type Buffer , where the DPMS Based 308AR uses a DPMS 308 Carbine Buffer of their own design , but a AR 15 standard Carbine Receiver Extension .

Both systems can be used on any 308AR , as long as the proper components for each system are used .

But edgecruser pretty much sums it up .

Nothing you would be able to detect I'm guessing.

What I meant by this is what SS explained in a far more LOQUACIOUS manor. You can use different weight buffers with both types. There is more combinations ( to mess up too) with the carbine system. I would reference Clint's chart, from heavy buffers.com. When building I only use his parts, heavy buffers, to reduce felt recoil. Another method is using an adjustable gas block and tuning that way.

K.I.S.S is a recipe to success. FYI

We can all be quite loquacious, given the correct topic...  :lmao:

I hope @StainTrain is still using this term in his AARs...    :laffs:

Texas bro...Texas.

I don't always drink brandy, but when I do..... I always become loquasiously inappropriate.

Didn't think anyone outside the upper mid west drank brandy in that quantity.

We got a contractor my boss knew hooked on brandy old fashions he went home to TN and people looked at him like he had horns growing out his head when he ordered one. It's said Wisconsin consumes more bandy than the rest of the country combined
