mesablu
Hello Gentlemen, I am in the process building my first rifle and need some advice. Since there is a chance Biden might win and ban all online sale of guns/ gun parts so it is probably a good idea that I build my rifle now. I have sourced the following parts from various venders and would like to be sure that all the components are paired correctly, I have not sourced an sights for this. Not only that I would like to know what parts I might be missing or unnecessary, again first timer here. My desired build is for an 308 chambered mid range rifle, so I hope that I am on the right forum. link Forward Assist Assembly https://www.ar15part.com/308-AR10-Forward-Assist-Assembly-Kit-p/faa308.htm Ejection Port Dust Cover https://www.primaryarms.com/aero-precision-ar-308-ejection-port-cover-kit-aprh100107 Charging Handle https://www.primaryarms.com/aero-precision-ar-308-charging-handle-aprh100125 Gas Block https://www.primaryarms.com/aero-precision-low-profile-gas-block-750-set-screw Barrel (w/ out extension) https://www.primaryarms.com/ballistic-advantage-ar-10-308-16-mid-length-barrel-5-8x24-babl308003m barrel guard https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/guntec-ar-15-freefloat-handguard-15-m-lok-aluminum-black-gt-15mlk/FC-714569645946.html Safety Selector Lever https://www.primaryarms.com/expo-arms-ar-15-ambi-safety-selector Safety Spring & Detent https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003339888 Trigger & spring https://www.primaryarms.com/cmc-ar-15-ar-10-drop-in-duty-single-stage-4.5lb-curved-trigger-mil-spec-.154in Hammer & spring https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003326576 Disconnector & spring https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003337737 Bolt Catch (roll pin incompatible) https://www.primaryarms.com/aero-precision-ar-308-bolt-catch-aprh100134 Bolt Catch Spring & Plunger https://www.primaryarms.com/ds-arms-bolt-catch-plunger-zm48634 Magazine Release Button https://www.primaryarms.com/odin-works-xmr-extended-magazine-release-black Pistol Grip, Screw & Washer https://www.primaryarms.com/hogue-ar-15-m-16-overmolded-pistol-grip-with-cargo-management-black-ho15010 Takedown Spring and Detent https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003335390 Bolt carrier group https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/aero-precision-3087.62-bcg-with-forward-assist-phosphate/FC-815421020144.html Castle Nut https://www.primaryarms.com/anderson-manufacturing-mil-spec-carbine-castle-nut-am-26 Stripped lower receiver https://www.primaryarms.com/aero-precision-m5-gen-ii-308-stripped-lower-receiver-dpms-cut-apar308003?quantity=1 Stock https://www.primaryarms.com/magpul-acs-l-carbine-stock-mil-spec-black-mag378-blk pivot pin https://www.primaryarms.com/aero-precision-m5-308-pivot-pin I would appreciate any input or critique to the proposed part list. Your Aero Precision BCG is out of stock at "Cheaper Than Dirt" , I didn't check the rest, but looks like you're on the right track... actually its showing in stock in Clearance AR-10 goodies, so your are in luck... Armed Eye Doc
You have a drop in trigger in your list. You do not need the hammer spring or disconnector spring. I would actually recommend the larue MBT2S trigger. It is less expensive and a great trigger. I have several and love them. Your handguard will not work.. it is for an AR15 which is not interchangeable with a 308AR. Also, please let us know more about yourself in the intro section. That is also applicable to @Karo as well Edited November 8, 2020 by Armed Eye Doc
dpete
Welcome Mesablu! With no Mil-Spec in the 308AR world you need components that will play nice together. You have an Aero Precision lower listed. Put that together with an Aero upper and BCG. You will have the 3 biggest working components of the rifle all from the same source. They will play nice. As was mentioned by Doc, the handguard you chose won't work, it needs to be designed for a 308AR. Again, an Aero handguard will mate with an Aero upper without problem. While you are at it, buy an Aero lower parts kit to go with them. You have most of the parts listed as individual items, is that because a complete Aero LPK isn't in stock anywhere? See where I'm going with this? All parts from same source and they WILL work together. With the current panic buying climate I know finding parts is a nightmare, but getting all the working parts from the same source will save you from after its built nightmares. The kind of nightmares all of the "my rifle doesn't work right" posts come from. When I first joined here I was in the process of building my 308AR. I had read a lot of the horror stories of rifles not working. I already had an Aero upper/lower/BCG/lower parts kit on the way. I put it together, took it to the range, and from the first shot it functioned. No headaches or horror. Just bang.
sagebrush
you will also need a receiver extension kit. armalite receiver extension kit number AR10REKIT01 will work very well. 75.00 from armalite, not sure if available. it includes tube, endplate, lockring, buffer, 1095 spring. this will work with your magpul stock

sagebrush
if you get the quad rail you will need to get nut also for standard m5 upper. box you have to check to get nut with guard. @mesablu Edited November 8, 2020 by sagebrush
mesablu
Thank you Gentlemen for all your advice. I have ordered based on all your suggestions and would have been done by now but the Aero barrel nut that came with my handguard came packed with a AR15 barrel nut and not the M5 barrel nut that it was suppose to. That should arrive tomorrow and once assembled sometime this weekend I plan on posting photos. In the meantime my hunt for .308 ammo has been rough. I have only managed to acquire 80 rounds of TulAmmo (which I do not plan to shoot anytime soon being steel) and 40 rounds of Hornady Black which I would prefer not to use as target ammo initially. Because of the panic and ammo shortage I have entertained the idea of reloading. What are your thoughts on reloading,? I too have been informed that materials for loading is in short supply as well but from it doesn't appear as scarce as ammo. Poking around the below link seems like a viable solution to beginning reloading. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1022385415
392heminut
Looks like most of their reloading kits are out of stock too! I would recommend this setup; https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1013020237?pid=785993 The turret press lets you set up all your dies for one caliber on a turret and leave them set up. Changing and adjusting dies for each stage gets old really fast if you do much reloading, especially if you plan on reloading for more than one caliber. The turrets are interchangeable on the Lee presses and you can buy a turret for each caliber and leave the dies set up on the turret. I've used a lot of Lee stuff and never had a problem with any of it. I would recommend getting a hand priming tool though, the priming setups on most presses can be a pain and very slow. Something like this; https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1012924740?pid=319794
shooterrex
https://www.theamericanmarksman.com/762-NATO-308_c_307.html This is decent ammo. I have shot a lot of it.
mesablu
Hello All, I am about 2 months late in posting this but I have finished my build. Thank you all for your suggestions and steering me clear of what would have created some headaches in this process. I have since gone to the range twice, mainly to zero my scope, but both times have experienced multiple misfeeding issues on about the 2nd or 3rd shot (each time I am only loading 5 rounds at a time). The first time at the range I was shooting cheap Tulammo and figured that might have played a roll in the misfeed and failure to eject the emptied casing causing a jam feeding the next round. This last weekend I fired 20 rounds of 7.62x51mm L2A2 ball ammo (which was gifted to me by a friend and is probably older than I am) and 10 rounds of Winchester 7.62x51mm M80. With both the L2A2 and M80 ammo I experienced a jam and a misfeed. What would you guys consider my issue to be? I believe I can rule out the quality of ammo I am running. Does this sound like a gassing issue and sound like I should try out an adjustable gas block? I am currently using a AP low profile non-adjustable one. Armed Eye Doc
How much lube did you use? These large frame ARs like a lot of lube during break in. Also, did you use more than one mag? More than one brand?
mesablu
I did use ALOT of lube and I currently have 2 20rd promags.

The only way I'd be able to rule out the quality of the ammo that you are using, is if you told me that you've only used Hornady factory-loaded Match ammo to break this gun in. Surplus ammo can degrade over time. Some surplus ammo can turn to absolute shiit. Don't blame the ammo - until you use modern, NEW .308 Win ammo that's recently purchased somewhere...
