Generally we grill (I've got the grilled piped into house gas, so I use it all the time anyhow here in FL), but I do have one thing I do thats a little unusual. Every year, I pull out a flag I have. I don't fly it, or even unfold it, but bring it out and talk with the kids about it. Its a flag that was flown over the Arizona in Pearl Harbor on memorial day. And then we talk a bit about pearl harbor, the military and wars. Its kind of funny, I didn't have any relatives who died there, but standing on the Arizona memorial each time i've been there has been some of the most emotionally moving moments in my life.

Family will come over and we grill out.I fabed up a flag holder from 1 1/4" pipe blk pipe and 10 ga. backplate.Got a little buzz box stick welder.Tired of others breaking.I fly a 3'X2' flag out front majority of the time.A day of reflection for all our brothers and sisters that have sacrificed and contine to sacrifice for this great country of ours.Never forgotten forever loved.

Normally, if the roads are dry, we go up to the Stanislaus National Forest. 8000' up and 13 miles from the highway entrance. It's a haul in there but a perfect spot next to a running creek, a reservoir, Relief Reservoir (Kyaking/canoeing/fishing), is 2 miles further down the road. The spot is secluded and nobody else is around. The scenery with all the peaks up there is spectacular. The roads are dry for sure now. If not we go on the 4th. We also go labor day holiday. We have all the camping goodies including the required pooper tent. We have a hot water shower setup, it's awesome.. If roads weren't open we have an alternative.

Regretably I cannot go this time since I am moving this weekend.

Usually we grill out with the family, fly the American flag, but this year I'm going to spend it out at a shooting range hosted by NRA High Power shooting Juniors(fundraiser)something very different.....

The group I ride with gets together and we take the Harleys over to a little town called Greenfield. A vet paints a very large rock every year (the same one over and over) in military tribute. Then it's off to the vets cemetery and I visit some of my fallen brothers I serviced with. When I was young my father would take us there and we would place flags. But now I actually know them not just names on the stone, means a hell of a lot more now.

Everyone should take the family to a National cemetary.

Everyone should take the family to a National cemetary.

.

That's a splendid idea. However when go to the mountain camping spot it is a guarantied equivelent of multiple 21 gun solutes.

The wife had to work, so I went to the range and shot my 1911 then I rode my Harley. After that I grilled some burgers for the wife so she would have dinner when she came home. I drank some Red Stag and coke zero lol. Then I said a little prayer in thanks for the great day I had because of other vets that weren't as lucky as me. Then I  watched John Wayne movies  The Green Beret's  and The Flying Leathernecks.  The wife and I are DINK's Dual Income (thank you Lord) No Kids. But if we did you better bet they'd be watching it with me and not that other crap on tv.

Calm day with the family and then I went shooting with an old military friend. Of course I took some time to think about all those that made the ultimate sacrifice and those that have and still are serving.

we did the normal thing, then when the wife + I got into bed we put on the military history channel, and were watching the "Last Days of WWII" show.

Put my son on a plane to Okinawa at LAX and then started the long drive home. God bless every person who is or has served this great nation! Because of you we still remain the greatest country on Earth!
