Yup, your barrel is throated pretty good (the beveled part at the chamber opening). As Tom said, most 45's have a two part feed ramp, the frame portion and the barrel throat. That bevel leaves a small portion of the case unsupported, but the 45 ACP round is a low pressure round so it's not a problem except for the very rare times a case has been reloaded too many times and lets go in that area. In 30 years of reloading I've never seen it happen, only seen a few pictures. The ramped barrels that Jon referred to have an integral ramp on them and the frame has to be milled to use one, after which the frame can't be used with a standard barrel. A lot of folks are under the impression that the ramped barrels came about to correct feeding problems, but that is not the case. If you look at a 1911 barrel with the integral feed ramp you'll see that there is full support around the base of the cartridge. These barrels came about back when USPSA shooters started using the 38 Super in the Open Division because they found that lighter, faster bullets made the compensators on the pistols work better. They had to load to make Major Power Factor (bullet weight x velocity divided by 1000 = 175 or higher) and that's when the problems started. Cases started rupturing in the unsupported area of the barrel throat causing a malady known amongst USPSA shooters as 'Super Face' which consisted of little marks peppered all over your face from the debris that blew back through the ejector channel in the slide when a case let loose. <laughs> The ramped barrel was developed to fully support the cases of these hotrodded rounds, and the more reliable feeding was a byproduct. Nowadays pretty much all competition guns in 40 S&W, 38 Super/Super Comp and 9mm are ramped but almost none of the 45's are. It's just not an issue with the 45's. Now that I've bored the crap out of everyone with this bit of history of the evolution of the 1911 platform I will return you to your regularly scheduled programing! <lmao>

I use Winchester primers for the bulk of my reloading, but if they aren't available I'll use whatever else I can get. I'm with Tom on the Varget powder for 308. In .223 I'm using H335.

Relatively speaking, brass is a pretty soft metal. I've realoaded for 30 years and loaded stuff from 380 ACP to 30.06. I've seen burrs on the rims of pretty much every caliber of brass that I've reloaded and have never worried about it. I can't recall ever having a malfunction because of a minor burr. Now that's not to say I just ignore the bent rims and rims with chunks pulled out of them by the extractors, those go in the trash.

Tom, of all the people I know, you are the one I am least surprised to hear that from! <thumbsup> <lmao>

I posted this on my Facebook page! <thumbsup>

And if you find some mags they will probably be the most expensive you've ever bought!

Anyone have expeience with a Sig 239 9mm? (For wife)
392heminut replied to SPBCTS's topic in Handguns
My wife used to shoot USPSA matches with me. I had a Para Ordinance in 40 S&W that I built into an Open Class gun for her (compensated and red dot scoped). She's only 5' tall but she shot the hell out of that thing! The fat grip didn't seem to bother her at all. It just goes back to what SPBCTS said, if they are comfortable with it they will be a lot more able to shoot it. -

And a lot more likely to have it when they need it too! <thumbsup> -
Rene, glad to hear the gun is settling in and starting to function better. I agree with SPBCTS, call Sig and let them know what's going on. Who knows, you could get a couple of free mags with just a phone call. As far as extra mags go, I've been using Chip McCormick (CMC) mags for years in both the 8 & 10 round varieties and even 7 rounders for my Officers Model and have never had a mag related issue with them. Some I've had for over 15 years and I've never had to even replace a spring! If you can, take your camera to the range with you and take a pic of the position of the round in the gun when you have a feed issue. Email it to me at l_srader (at) hotmail (dot) com and it will make it easier for me to see what is going on. Carry on brother! ;)

That was awesome. Thanks Robo! <thumbsup>

Another problem - Many hunters are against "Assault Weapons"
392heminut replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
My oldest son, who spent 12 years in the Army, is now living in Alaska. He has all sorts of guns and hunts a lot. He has never owned an AR type rifle and I've been preaching to him for years to get one. It's not that he has anything against the platform (he has shot the crap out of mine whenever he's home) he has just kept putting it off. He called me yesterday wanting any advice I could give him on purchasing one now. Seems the frenzy has opened his eyes and he now thinks he better get one while he still can. My advice was "If you can find one locally and have the money get it NOW, not tomorrow. Tomorrow it will be gone!" Magwa, thumbs up on your attitude on hunting! Other than predators I've never hunted for anything I didn't intend to eat, and have always consumed what I've killed. I've never been a trophy hunter. A friend of mine has a ranch up in central New Mexico gave me an open invitation to hunt elk at his place, as he gets several permits every year. I told him I had no interest in a rack, but would love to put some elk in the freezer. Couldn't do it this year but next year I will for sure! -
Done! <thumbsup>

SPBCTS, you hit the nail on the head there! Another point a friend of mine brought up and is NEVER discussed is that before psychiatric drugs came about this stuff wasn't happening. People dealt with family members with problems, but now we have kids being drugged for ADD, ADHD, and a host of other 'psych' problems. The parents are just too busy to take the time to help their kids work through issues and find it easier to just give them a pill! You will never see a government study on it, but I figure at least 90% of the people who are doing this crazy crap are either on psych meds or have been. Has there ever been a study done on the long term side effect of all these psych meds? I've never heard of one, and I suspect if one has ever been done the powers that be have never released the results.

Actually Jon, COP stands for CONSTABLE On Patrol! As for the SRO situation, being retired from law enforcement for 10 years and having worked in the local school system for most of those 10 years I have a somewhat unique perspective on it. SRO's were pulled out of our schools a few years ago due to the federal grants going away. The SRO's here weren't there just for student protection, they handled any problems of a law enforcement nature that came up at the schools and interacted with the kids. The day shift patrol was freed up to deal with other stuff and weren't answering calls to the schools, which happen a lot more frequently than people know about. The kids had a lot more respect for cops because they found that we were approachable and weren't the big bad policemen they thought we were. (You can't imagine how many times in 23 years I heard parents tell their kids "You better do this or that or I'll have that policeman arrest you!") The SRO's also developed leads to crimes outside the school system because of their interaction with the kids. At this point in time SRO's are about the only ones with a snowball's chance in hell of being armed in a school thanks to the 'Gun Free Zone' B.S.! Besides myself, there are 2 other retired officers working at our high school, one is a counselor and one works security. NONE of us can legally carry on school grounds! HR 218 gives us the right to carry concealed almost any place in the country, but yet we apparently can't be trusted to carry where our own kids go to school? I just don't understand that!

Way to go Armalite! <thumbsup>
-
Article states that info was not released on how many of the staff will be armed. This is as it should be! That is nobody's business but Administration, especially the news media! Just the fact that there may be armed personnel at a school will be a deterrent and will have a big effect on any choices one of these sick assholes makes. <thumbsup>

Damn, this could have been my post, right down to getting my first 4G phone this week! <lmao> The wife and I both got new phones. A friend of her's came over to show us how they work and my head hurt after she left! I am a technology tard for sure! <lmao>

Well, here he is, one of the USMC's newest Devil Dogs. PFC Josh Srader graduated Dec. 7th. He received a meritorious promotion 2 days before graduation!

This is a terrible tragedy! The worst thing a parent could ever have to deal with is burying a child. :'( I have to lay a LOT of the blame for these shootings on the news media. If it weren't for their sensationalizing this crap most of these suicidal bastards would probably just be happy with ending their own miserable lives, but now they want to make headlines when they do it. The other problem is these cowardly a--holes choose targets where they know guns aren't allowed so they can get away with their plans.

WTF! Flu shots are free! :cookoo: Back years ago the local U.S. Customs office had several WWII 'grease guns' and a couple of M1 Garands that were stamped 'match grade' or something along that line. When Customs standardized on the M-16 the Agent in Charge was told to destroy the aforementioned guns. A lieutenant at the P.D. tried like hell to get the Garands transfered to P. D. possession but was unable to do it and all those guns went into the melting pot at the Asarco Mill in El Paso! :'(

Well, I'm sitting in a motel in San Diego and I get to see Josh tomorrow on Family Day! I've sure missed that kid! Robo, I intended to make a print of that pic and have it framed and matted, that's why I have it sized to 8X10 proportions. As with a lot of things I intend to do, it has gotten put on the back burner. Now that I've drug it out again maybe I can remember to get it done! ::)

LAR-8 Elite-O. Just Ordered. (Advice: Handguard & Optics?)
392heminut replied to GS455's topic in Rock River Arms LAR-8
Now that's an understatement! <lmao> -
It was brought to my attention recently that Josh shipped out for boot camp on 9-11-12, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks, and he graduates on 12-7-12, the anniversary of Pearl Harbor! The attached picture is of him in New York City at the World Trade Center Memorial in front of a piece of one of the buildings the summer of 2008. The other pics are ones I snapped from the Hudson River. He and I both were profoundly affected by this trip, but I don't think I really realized just how much he was affected by it!
