When I was in the academy, I damn near failed out because of traffic stops. I hated them and swore I'd never do them when I got on the job.
When I got hired and was in field training, I flubbed my first stops so bad my Training Officer tore my ass till I got it right. The crusty old bastard was a former motorcycle cop, and could make a car stop in his sleep.
I absolutely HATED traffic stops. They are dangerous and never 100% controlled. The retarded part is I've been a motorcycle cop since 2006, and now I make car stops ALL DAY LONG. I still hate traffic, but now I'm the guy who trains the new kids. Funny how life turns out.
I don't think traffic enforcement needs to be handled the way most people fear it is handled. I believe education can be administered as effectively as a fine. Sure, I have my pet peeves that score an instant ticket, and there are certain violations that are considered "zero tolerance". Most of the time, if I can find a fix-it ticket violation over a moving violation, I'll give that out instead.
