I grew up 15 minutes from Sears Point Raceway (now called Infinion Raceway) I loved going to NHRA top fuels and alcohols in the summer. Also nothing beats being around those jet cars! I'd also like to point out that while the NASCAR world hates her, I'd still wrap Danica's legs around my head and wear her like a gas mask!

Welcome! The wife wants me to fly us out there next month. I believe she's thinking Maui area.

Bore snakes are great for clearing a barrel from debris, but I don't suggest them for serious cleaning.

Having 2nd thoughts about one thing.......
Robocop1051 replied to NoFail's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
I'm pretty sure the LMOS has a buffer too. Possibly a spring as well. The whole point of the system is to cut as much gas as possible. No heavy buffers or special springs. Combining the two systems would be counter-productive. -
Funny little side story. My father was a deputy for 34 years (still working as an annuitant 6 years later). During his career he was a Sniper on their SWAT team for about 17 of those years. He cross trained with every LE, military and federal branch you can imagine, within a 500 mile radius. Needless to say, all my life I've strived to shoot as good as him. As we were shooting his new AR, he wanted to sight it in. We were standing in the middle of my friends ranch, so I guesstimated 25 yards with a piece of paper on plywood and we got started. After we got it as close as we could, he pulls up the rifle, fires off three shots, standing, and puts them all in the same hole. Who shoots a 1/2" group standing/freehanded, with a brand new rifle??? I looked at him and said,"I give up!" I don't normally toot my own horn, but I'm a good shot. Some say a damn good shot. My department holds small in house shooting competitions and I take top-gun and QuickDraw every time.... But my father makes me look like the Christmas Story kid with his Red Rider BB gun.

I like the barrel. Clean lines, good finish and slick lining. The barrel feels very sturdy for a pencil barrel. DD was the only .625 (pencil) I could readily get with the mid gas system. It's a gas block. I thought it looked off, but it's working perfectly so I'm not changing anything! That skinny pencil barrel makes things look out of proportion.

So a few weeks ago my father came to me and asked about lightening his old AR15. This old Colt had been his trusty duty rifle prior to his retirement, and was faithful and reliable to the end. He knew I had been working on rifles and building my own, so he was ready to try out something new. I've taken more from my Dad over the years than I will ever be able to give back, so I wanted to do something a little special on this go around. Stuck in his old ways, and afraid to crack the wallet, he instructed "nothing too crazy". I had other plans in mind, and seeing as how I was gifting this all to him, I was going to go nuts!! It started out as a standard 16" AR15 with a carbine M203 style barrel. Bone stock from Colts shelves, from about 25-30 years ago. After stripping it down for the basic parts, I began a complete rebuild. My intention was to keep as much Colt as possible, as I didn't want to break the heart of the old cowboy who'd be shooting it the most. Colt lower Colt M4 Upper Colt Full Auto Carrier (From a de-Mil'd Colt M4) Colt stainless steel bolt Carbine H buffer (from the same Colt M4) Bad Inc. BADASS Short Throw Tubb CS Flat Spring Daniel Defense 14.5" LW Mid CHF Barrel PRI .625 Gas Block with Flip Sight Battlecomp v1.5 Magpul Mid length Handguard (w/ VFG and Sling Mount) Magpul Trigger Guard Tango Down grip Magpul Gen2 Rear MBUS Did my first "15 Minute Trigger Job"... It took me about 45 minutes, but it works perfectly Last threw on a old red dot, flashlight and laser I had laying around Not only is it lighter than he expected, this thing pop's like a toy gun. The middy barrel with the flat spring and H-buffer are absolutely perfect! I took it out this afternoon and handed it over to him. The look in his eye when I said "It's all yours" was thanks enough. We popped off a few rounds at a friends ranch and couldn't have been more satisfied. He packaged it up and took off to go show off to his friends.

I sold my JD 308 over a year ago... maybe closer to 18 months ago. I have no idea what the serial was.

I'm the worst person to ask about whats "right or wrong" about cleaning. While I enjoy the time I spend cleaning a gun while watching football and drinking a cold beer.... I really hate cleaning my guns. I shoot them dirty and expect top notch performance with them. A flex cable seems like it would work fine, but it would take a long time. I'm sure it's better than relying on a bore-snake.

A decent bore guide will extend the life of your barrel... Well not exactly "extend", I guess it'd be more accurate to say it will prevent shortening the life of your barrel due to careless cleaning.

Strength, reliability and precision quality. You can buy one for under $100, but you're tempting fate with the possibility of airsoft quality parts. If you want to make 100% sure that you "picatinny" rails are exact measurements from tip to end, then you gotta spend the bucks. If you want to make sure that you can dish out a good beating on your rifle and be sure that the handguard is going to stay in working condition, you're going to have to crack your wallet. I agree that price tags like Superior Weapon Systems or even Daniel Defense can be intimidating.... But there's a reason why the best of the best use them <thumbsup>

Repoman, You should check out this site; http://tactical22.net/ That's a popular fun-gun. I've knocked around the idea many times about a new .22lr

Sorry I don't have a better picture of this right now. I'll get another picture up later tonight... Maybe <dontknow> I had mine sent to a guy who is a Duracoat specialist. He said there was a type of "finesse" required for painting the PMAG's and he added a special chemical to work with the flexibility of the mag. To be honest, I can't tell they're even painted. I allowed the full 30 days (and then some) for curing, before I started messing with them. Check out: Rob Hilberg http://duracoaters.com/ rob@duracoaters.com P.O. Box 3522 Santa Rosa, CA 95402 tel. (707) 235-5083 He did all my parts, worked very VERY fast, and had my parts back to me by the end of the week. I had him paint my stock, handguard and several PMAG's. He can color match as well. I sent him Magpul OD floor plates from some 5.56 PMAGs and he matched the paint perfectly. Compare for yourself against the OD Magpul MIAD grip I have installed.

Where can I purchase JD Machine handguard?
Robocop1051 replied to lilredsammy's topic in .308AR Parts
NoFail, Can we get the exact weight of that handguard you got? I'd love to know how it compares to my Apex CNC 12.5" -
I read semi-recently that the current generation of JD 308's will work with the LR-20 PMAG.... But I can't find it again, and I can't confirm that 100%. All I know it that MY JD did not work with PMAG's, thus I no longer own it.

I now see and understand. <munch>

You still have to find a slick side upper receiver without an ejection port cover. Otherwise you'll have those little port hinge holes sticking out.
-
Lookin good! <thumbsup> The JP LMOS is fine as long as you run the adj gb right. That system is designed to use the least amount of gas as possible.
-
NoFail, where are you located. I'm from Santa Rosa originally. Now I'm in Sacramento.

If the cost of te Noveske barrel didn't scare you off, try contacting Dave Branson from the MA-Ten group buy. He used to have a good line on custom Rock 5R barrels. You could also look into Satern or similar companies for a custom stainless barrel.

First .308 build need a little help with gas/ cycling
Robocop1051 replied to phantom01231's topic in Building a .308AR
That's the problem. You need to try out a box of factory .308, and it should be over 160 gr. 7.62 NATO, especially surplus foreign stuff, is not as powerful as good old American .308 Winchester. You might need to run some high octane stuff till your gun breaks in. After the parts settle you can try the surplus stuff again. You may also want to try different brands of mags. Although, you should be able to test mags by cycling the action with your hand. -
so yesterday, i went shooting my build.....

Robocop1051 replied to phantom01231's topic in Building a .308AR
What size bullets are you shooting? It sounds like you need more pressure. At least until things are broken in. -
<thumbsup>+1 That's good info there!
