  1. Took the Scout back out today, and checked everything out at 100 yards. Federal 150gr soft-points today. 100 yards. Red dot. I'll take this all day long at 100 with a red dot. <thumbsup> Shot it out to 400, and had the hits on steel, with some holdover. Shot at the 500 and 550, and got close, but I wouldn't make a hunting shot at those ranges with the red dot, like it is now. I was surprised at how it did out to 400, though - I'd make that hunting shot with it. I flung one out there, to the left... <dontknow>
  2. I've got that rear sight on one rifle - it's damn good. <thumbsup>
  3. drop, not meaning to push you into that section, but there is recent info in there. Fire off some details on the gun, and what you'll be going after with it - that info helps for this kinda stuff. Personally, no matter what I'd be doing with it, if it were mine, I's be running a one-piece scope mount. Several QD manufacturers available, with Larue, ADM (forgot to mention them last time this came up), and Bobro. Armalite is always a runner in the contest, but they don't offer QD levers, instead using milspec-type thumbscrews. Still comes off easy.
  4. Lots of info in this section, brother - Optics & Mounts, BUIS, Sights: http://308ar.com/forum/optics-mounts-buis-sights/
  5. Different setups do certain things better. It's simple. Here's most of mine. The only one that's not a 5.56 gun is the top one in the pic, and that's the .308. I just finished another one that's not in the pic, and I have two more stripped lowers to build, both of which are already planned out.
  6. You can buy a chamber reamer, but that's not the DIY way to change headspace problems. It can help with minor problems with headspace, but that's a backwards way to go about things if there's a bigger problem. The only "DIY" way to set headspace - is to be a barrel builder. I've posted the steps involved before, so a search might turn up what all gets done, and the order they're done in.
  7. Break up the all-black outline of the rifle, if you ever intend to shoot it anywhere other than a shooting range... Looks great, 49! <thumbsup>
  8. You'll need the DD Lite barrel nut wrench - it's a proprietary barrel nut. Probably the heaviest bullet you'll be able to run is a 175 grain. Some 180s might make it, like soft-point hunting rounds, but most 180s will need to be loaded to a length that won't fit into the .308 AR-type magazines. I'm not sure if there are any companies still loading 178 grain cartridges anymore.
  9. ADCO prefers to just receive the barrel, only, when performing barrel work. If you send in the whole upper, you'll need to pay them to strip it down and remove the barrel, then build it back up after the barrel work - unless you'll build it back up yourself. Didn't know if you were aware of that or not.
  10. NEVERRRRRRRRRRRR!!! <laughs>
  11. That's VERY damn nice, man! <thumbsup> I love Gear Sector slings...
  12. The Troy MRF-308 will be long enough to almost completely cover that chopped front sight base. <thumbsup> It does completely cover a short, lo-pro gas block, so there won't be much sticking out with that one, once you chop it.
  13. I completely forgot to mention ADM QD scope mounts, and I even have one... :o
  14. I vote to chop the front sight base, and freefloat it with a longer rail that will cover it up. <thumbsup>
  15. They all mount on a receiver extension that's the same length as the AR-15. The RRA BCG is longer, so I suspect the buffer is shorter, so they can both fit into the same length of space - no other way it can work. Not sure what options you'll have for buffers... <dontknow>
  16. TNVC for night vision options... <thumbsup> http://www.tnvc.com/
  17. This is what I was providing for you. Measure the length of the buffer you have currently, provide that measurement, and then you can compare what else is available. Stocks have already been covered.
  18. Today was one of my good days... :o <lmao>
  19. Okay, got out to the range about 2:30pm today, and they close at 5pm. Overcast, no good vis on the longer distance targets (out to 550 yards), but everything up to 250 was easily visible. That comes into play later... Had to zero the 5.56 Woody and the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle today. The Woody is all completely irons, but the Scout is a mini red dot. Here's the Woody - National Match stainless heavy barrel and National Match carry handle rear sights; I still need to pick up the skinny front sight post for it, and a couple other things. Not quite complete yet, but it needed to be shot. Both guns, being brand new and never shot, we initially shot at 25 yards. I went to 50 yards after that, since it was a short day. On the Woody, I'll end up with a 300-yard zero, eventually, just based on military-ingrained mentality for a 20" 5.56 gun with irons. I'm thinking right now that I like having the Scout set up like it is - with the red dot and a zero that will go from 50 yards to 250 yards. The Woody first: 25 yard sight-in - all shot groups were 5-rd groups, just to get everything set up. Explanation in the pic itself, but I installed the A1 front sight post flush with the sight base, and I didn't touch the RRA NM carry handle sights - they were shipped this way. What you see in Group 1 is the way the sights were shipped, and install flush (front). At 25, I think I got it pretty good: I made a minor adjustment when I shot at 50 - first group is the upper right (in red circle), then the minor adjustment for the 50 yard zero (dead nuts centered): I rocked that thing after that. Hits on the 150, 200, and 250 steel were all there (man-sized steel silhouettes), and it was a great feeling. <thumbsup> The Scout: Here's the 25 yard target for the Scout - this rifle will very quickly become my favorite rifle, too. What a load of fun, and practical use. Talk about a brush gun from hell! I love it already... ;D First shot group at 25 is 5 rounds - those things were stacked, and I had the sight set on lower power to make the dot smaller and more precise. I was surprised at that group, even though it was 25 yards with a red dot. After the first group, I only did two round strings, then adjusted: From that point, I went to the 50 yard target, shot 5, and checked it - looks like 4 holes, but there were 5 shots, and I didn't miss. These were fired as fast as I could work the action and get the red dot back on target: I left it right there, and started shooting the targets at 150, 200, and 250. Ringing the larger steel targets with regularity. <thumbsup> Overall, I'm REALLY impressed with the Woody. I can't wait to get the Young NM BCG in there and the skinny front sight post, along with the Fulton NM A2 flash suppressor - that will complete it, and I really want to shoot it again with the skinny front sight post. What a great build. The Scout is something else - what a fun gun. I'd take that thing anywhere, just as it is. I planned to put a long-eye-relief Burris pistol scope on it, but I might just leave it like this. One thing I WILL do is pick up a Spike's .308 Dynacomp and mount that on the end of the barrel, just to see what it does. This is the perfect bolt gun to suppress, I'm thinking. :o <laughs>
  20. Working on target pics right now, but I took the 5.56 Woody and the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle to the range today, just to set up the sights. <thumbsup> Back in a few... <munch>
  21. Please report back and let us know how everything turns out - I'd love to send a bunch of stuff to these guys, just because I don't see anyone else offering this service. It would be great to hear some feedback - and pics! ;D
  22. 1) Google search "gas block front sight," and alot will come up. There are several manufacturers for these, and most are very high quality. Check back with some of your finds, and we will certainly opine... ;D 2) Yes, on the stock. Maybe, on the MOE handguards. Minor fitment may be required on those handguards. Very minor. 3) Quick suggestions, here. Higher priced and high quality, true quick detach: LaRue and Bobro. Lower priced, and still high quality" Armalite one-piece, which uses two thumb-screws for attachment/removal. Doesn't have a lever(s) to throw, but it's a damn good piece, and far cheaper than the other two I mentioned. There are others out there, also, but those are great.
  23. Like Robo said above, the basic parts that will interchange into the RRA guns from the other .308 ARs will be triggers, lower parts kits, pistol grips, and stocks. Any kind of back up sights will work, as long as they attach to a Pic rail piece. The RRA barrels are threaded 5/8" x 24, so muzzle devices will cross over. BCGs and charging handles will not cross over. Rails will not cross over. DPMS and Armalite pattern barrels will not cross over. Here's the Big Warning from RRA: http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=451 Also, check this NOTE written on the free float tube page about upper receiver threading: http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=537
  24. Still have to cut the 7.62 PRS to get it to work with the RRA .308s. They have a longer charging handle, which comes back further...
