Your comments just turned this thread in another direction, so brace yourself for it. Just stick a 1/4" wooden dowel down the barrel, and stop when you hit the wood. If you drill with light pressure, you won't hit the other side anyway. EDIT - if you drill with heavy pressure, you're gonna break that skinny drill bit off in your barrel's gas port...
