ATF changes rules on lenght of ar pistols
98Z5V replied to Magwa's topic in Firearm Industry News and Gossip
Go ahead, brother! Some enterprising young criminal will pick them up, and build whateverthefuck he wants with it, 'cause he don't giveashit about any gun laws that he doesn't even know about!!!... For real. They don't care what laws, rules, whatever are on the books... They do what they want anyway... Gun Laws only affect the law-abiding citizens. They don't affect criminals, in the least. If any of these recent "ATF Determination Letters" actually get into some kind of "law," it doesn't affect me in the least in my state. Not if I kep my firearms in MY state, and don't go out of State boundaries. A long time ago, in AZ, it was passed into State law that no more Federal Gun Laws would affect this state. All the ones before, are vaild - all the federal gun laws in the future, after passage of that bill, do not pertain to this state, inside this state. You like your bump-stock? Move here. -
You still didn't answer my recoil system questions that I asked you, but I'l tell you right now that is has more kick because you're "under-recoiled." Excuse me for asking meanass questions - most people feel "attacked" when I start asking questions, and quickly go "full-on defensive" about it, like I'm trying to insult their intelligence or something. But I'm gonna ask some questions, here. I mean no harm. "More than most you've had" means what? Other .308ARs? Other 5.56 guns? Bolt guns? It probably "has a kick, a bit more than most you've had" because it's a giant compromise in the two major systems that run the gun, and that's just to get it to work. There was a giant "money" compromise in the recoil system, AND the gas system - or a total lack of understanding on the manufacturers part, in it's design. That "money" compromise was aluminum vs. stainless steel in the construction of the buffer body, plus the cost of tungsten. The other compromise was in the spring - SO EASY to use an AR15 spring, or something generic - and not .308AR specific. So, there's a giant compromise in the recoil system - and how do you beat that, as a manufacturer? AR15 gas tubes are made from everyone - so let's just use those. Dime a dozen. The current "inexpensive" barrel-manufacturer route in the last couple years is to just drill a gas port location somewhere "between" the DPMS LR-308 gas port location, and the Armalite AR-10 location - somewhere "in between" - and then our customers can use ANY gas tube and it'll work. Another compromise in the system. And it doesn't always work. So, we're at a weak recoil system, and a gas tube that isn't at spec - what do we do to get the gun to run on .308 Win ammo now? Change the gas port diameter, go smaller. What you're getting into when you take on these kinds of things is "race gun shiit." You start dabbling around in lighter buffers, weaker recoil springs, smaller gas port diameters, - that's "race gun territory" right there. Might as well just toss in a lighter BCG while you're at it. Throw race gun parts at it. That does NOT make a functional factory rifle. Most of these "factories" do not understand that, and they make up a bunch of parts that "They" think will work, combine AR15 parts that are not up to spec on the larger ARs, and just say, "eh, it'll work for most of the people, most of the time, with most of the ammo..." If you're in that crowd, and your gun works - then don't change the ammo that you're using. You can build the gun right, so it'll function all the time - or you can take what you've got, with all it's compromises - and don't ever change the ammo you're using. Don't expect the same results from your gun if you change ammo.

This was all over the local news last night, with people in Chandler sending in cellphone videos to the news, of small ripples in their pool, or a chandelier moving a little bit in their house. I didn't feel a damn thing where I'm at. I was at Fort Ord for the October 1989 for the 6.9 that hit San Fran, and that was some shiit! Never seen asphalt roads "roll like waves on the ocean," but I did that day. Telephone poles swinging like a baseball player in the batter's box. I was a two-time earthquake lottery winner, and was at Fort Lewis for the 2001 Nisqually quake, at a 6.8 - and that one was wild as fuk. Running a Foreign Weapons range at the time, and had to yell at the idiot in the tower to get the fuk out of there and down on the ground. Again, dirt and earth rolling like waves on the ocean, and you can see each wave coming at you. Fucking surreal. I guess this one here that we're talking about was upgraded to a 7.1, and I've got local people that want to be in the news and "were part of it," but there wasn't anything to be felt, south of Phx. Nada.

That's like shooting a 55gr 5.56 projectile at 500 yards - it's beyond it's intended range. 400? No problem. When I shoot a 450-yard target with 55gr, I have to hold for a tick over 500 yards on a good BDC scope - because the bullet drops so much at that distance. Get some good ammo, heavier projectiles, and go re-visit the 400~600 that is giving you fits. Start with the ammo first. Don't change anything else on the gun. What kind of experience to you have with 400~600 yards with this cartridge? .308 Winchester?

Beer-Yoga... That crazy chick above - I'd actually run from that one,not even interested. She's fuckin' WHACKO. But they never start out that way - they start out "normal." It might be days, weeks, months... or even years later, before that level of crazy comes out. You never know, and you take that risk, every single time. Tell you now, though - it's in all of them.

ATF changes rules on lenght of ar pistols
98Z5V replied to Magwa's topic in Firearm Industry News and Gossip
As the law is written, right now, that is perfectly, 100% legal, in the eyes of the BATFE. Your state and local laws might be different, depends on where you live. You install a Vertical Pistol Grip on that thing, and you just created an unregistered AOW - but your angled grip is perfectly fine. These are a No-Go on an AR Pistol build: ^^^ Those, on an AR Pistol build, turn your (same) gun into an AOW. For an AOW, you need to pay your $5 tax stamp, and get approved, before you can "build" it... -
ATF changes rules on lenght of ar pistols

Huh, I responded before I watched the video, but after I'd read the comments here. Just watched the video... Now, this is all in response to something I stated up there ^^^. This is an individual response to some dipshiit that wrote them a letter. This affects 3 things, the way I listened to the reading of the letter: 1. Vertical pistol grips. Why would someone include that in a letter, when it's been written that way for so long? Why ask for a "determination" on that? Makes no sense to even ask them if you can do something that's already written on, and decided on, and it actually written into the laws already (notice, I'm differentiating on "law" versus "determination" there)... 2. AR Pistols that you can actually "adjust" the brace position on, i.e., SBA3, GHW Tailhook mod 2... If you can adjust the length, you can only count the OAL with it in the collapsed position. STUPID question to ask them to "determine." 3. Folding adaptors. Great WAY STUPID QUESTION TO ASK! Why ask them about that, and bring that into the "determination letter?!!?" Now, according to that letter, if you have a folding adaptor on your pistol, you must FOLD IT and make an OAL measurement... Now, since this was written as a response to an individual (that wrote to them and asked for "clarification"}, that's a good thing. Those types of letters, we've been cautioned and cautioned for a decade now - those letters aren't a blanket statement or a ruling - and certainly not a law - for everybody... That is a response to an individual, from ATF Firearms Technology Branch, TO that individual. No need for everyone to get worried. Yet. -
ATF changes rules on lenght of ar pistols

On the others, correct. On this one, incorrect. That forward grip is NOT a vertical grip. Only vertical grips are specifically mentioned in the actual terminology concerning AR pistol construction. Angled foregrips have been Good-To-Go for years, since they came out. Now, as soon as some dipshiit writes the ATF a letter and asks for determination, that could change. As long as people leave the sleeping dog lie, angled foregrips are perfectly legal on AR pistols. -
No, kinda. Other way around it quite true, though - any AP-branded barrel you get is a BA barrel. Correct.
-
This is how I would tackle that one.
-
Faxon or BA, both are fantastic barrel manufacturers. BCA is hit or miss, but they do have a guarantee.
-
The gas tube should end in the center of the cam pin cutout, by design, in order to have the appropriate amount of gas timing before the BCG separates itself from the gas source. I'd get that thing out of there and get an Armalite AR-10 Carbine Gas Tube in it. So, if you're cool with the function of it... - what's your recoil system look like? 3.8oz buffer that's 2.5" long, some weird spring, 7" internal depth extension? Know the gas port diameter in the barrel. 18" barrel midlength gas, 0.750 gas block diameter should be 0.080~0.085" gas port diameter. I imagine you'd need 0.085~0.090" gas port diameter to compensate the the shorter dwell time of the 16" barrel over an 18" barrel. There's a series of engineered or accidental "compromises" going on there, just to make the rifle function - but if you're happy with the function, then that's all that matters.
-
^^^ I laughed when I heard that...
-
It seems like there's something keeping that BCG from fully seating, and the bolt from locking in. Most of the time, that's chamber depth, or ammo. Grab a pic of that gas tube protrusion into the upper receiver, as well. It should end directly in the center of the cam pin cutout.
-
That was a GREAT interview!!! You killed it, brother!!!
-
Get a pic up here of the firing pin, laying on a tape measure. Can you insert one of these live rounds into the chamber, by hand? Just into the chamber (barrel) and it fully seats in there? No BCG in there, just the upper receiver by itself.
-
What spring do I use for the short 2.575" buffer?
98Z5V replied to joe448's topic in Building a .308AR
Sprinco Orange spring. -
I love that combo, brother - it's indeed very, very good.

My 20" rifle gas Wilson Combat .260 barrel is ridiculous for accuracy, and the 6.5s don't lose much in barrel-shortening vs. velocity. Amazing projectile. You can make "Mel Gibson Lethal Weapon" smilie faces on IPSC steel at 300 yards with this thing. It's worth hanging in there just for the cartridge, and it's potential. I'm supersonic at 1500 yards on my load, on that 20" barrel.
