shepp
Sighting in for deer season mounted my nikon prostaff everything went well there, bore sighted it at 15 yards set up at 100 fired three shots gun quit cycling thought it was cheap ammo (prvi partizan I have and shot before with no issues) switched to Winchester power point and still wouldn't look at the font of my gun and there's the gas block dangling. Got it sighted in single shooting but now I need to track down a gas block by Friday morning. Edited November 15, 2014 by shepp

DNP
How the fcuk does that happen??? Over torqued on the 3 screws? That sucks! Edited November 15, 2014 by DNP
shepp
How the fcuk does that happen??? Over torqued on the 3 screws? That sucks! I kinda thought that but that bayonet lug fractured too
DNP
That could still be. If the slot in the gas block was a little large and the metal it was made from was too brittle....I could see that tightening the screws could send most of the pressure to the sides. Add a little pop from each shot...not to mention the heating and cooling of the gas block over and over...just my completely unprofessional opinion. DNP
You're right. I can't explain the lug.
blue109
holy crap! even over torque shouldn't do that.
shepp
That's what it's suppose to look like but that looks a hell of a lot beefier than what was on my rifle
DNP
Can you take an end shot looking from both sides? I can see it broke at the thinnest point back at the block...still can't figure the lug. It's like control joints in concrete. There's always pressure...and when you give it a thin spot, you force the break to happen there. Where is that Matt Cross genius at...he'll figure it out. Dane Armory
How many rounds have been shot thru the barrel/gas block combo?
Dane Armory
That is very thin , what type of metal ?
shepp
200 +/- it's magnetic so steal, not sure the grade. Called a shop here in town I totally forgot about he was closing for the day but said he'd meet me there tomorrow (his off day) and get me running. survivalshop
Since it appears the bolted end of the gas block gave out ( torque on bolts or just a weak design ), more than likely the block failed while a shot was fired , the force of that end being forced up from the gas pressure , the Bayonet lug was twisted upwards & snapped because it alone wasn't strong enough to hold together & broke along with the bolted end . The Photo of this gas block in one piece , does appear to be made of a heavier casting .

The one in the picture is much thicker I can tell that too. guessing maybe this was an issue and they beefed it up? Matt.Cross
Holy crap, look at how thin that material is.... Where's the beef?
Dane Armory
Was I reading CAST steel ? If so, dropping it on concrete could cause a crack in the metal which would/could have caused the break.
DNP
And the gas port and tube are clear, nothing funny going on in the upper? No reason there would be excess pressure, right?
Tripledeuce
It looks like a stress fracture, from a bad casting. to me, Respectfully Terry
Boerboel guy
Wow. That's a fast way to ruin a day of shooting. Since you have it apart you may as well do it right now and have a pinned gas block installed. It absolutely boggles my mind that set screw only and clamp on blocks even exist. I've seen so many fail but have never seen a pinned one fail. That's the first one I've seen that deconstructed itself like that though, usually they just come loose and move around. DNP that thought crossed my mind I blew thru the gas tube when I got home and it was very free actually I was surprised how easy it was to push air thru Edited November 16, 2014 by shepp
washguy
Maybe "cheap China pot metal" ? American steel surely wouldnt do this? I would say the theory of barrel harmonics has just been proven :) Wash
