Of course...anything bad about firearms in the hands of WASP folks get's attention like poop draws flies. 2000 dead folks in car wrecks by stupid people driving when they can't operate a flashlight go right on , and on, and on! no problem...

Sad situation for that mom and kid.That being said I feel that a purse is a bad place for a firearm,it's easily snached.Now what, someone has the firearm.The only way to carry a pistol is on you'r person.Just my 2 mags.

Exactly what I thought when heard this. Tragic, yes. But not responsible on her part.

No disrespect intended, but a purse is not the place to put a carry gun if your a woman. As Unforgiven mentioned, thats what the bad guy wants is the purse, and where is the gun? Also carrying a gun in a holster in a purse to keep objects out of the muzzle and to prevent A.D.'s may require you to use both hands to remove the pistol from the holster. Or just the opposite a gun without a holster  and the woman draws out a pistol with a lipstick tube or tampon stuck in the barrel. Not to mention the time it would take for a woman to dig in her purse and try to find the gun somewhere in that  portable Suitcase of a Pandora's Box also know as a purse.

really is a great article...and makes me angry. frak everyone who force people to be self conscious or embarrassed about their decision to not be helpless sheep. ironic that's its the same people who go ape if you make fun of a guy wearing a dress, or if you attach a negative statistic to skin color. "don't tell us what to do....unless its something we don't want you to do"

I agree with you about the purse not being a place for a woman to pack.  However, I work with a sizable population of women who are plain clothes/professionally dressed LEO.  They do complain with regularity about practicality, fashionality, and concealability (hips) of holsters that are worn on the waist line and even the ankle.  They do it, but I can tell you they don't like it.   IWB seems to work well for some and a couple with slender hips pull off the owb with success.   I say all that to say that it comes as no surprise to me that some women not in a LEO choose the purse.  Just an observation.  

 

I know Jon and others have more experience working with women in an instruction role who could provide some more insight into this.

Excellent article. I bought my wife a Flashbang holster. She says it is just not comfortable. So, I got her a concealed carry purse. I has a seperate zippered pocket for her pistol. She likes it but it does make me a little nervous. I don't want someone snatching her purse but she is very careful.

IMO the author of this article hits on a MUCH bigger issue:

 

Anti-gunners say guns are dangerous but they don't want PSAs to let people know that, they don't want publicly funded firearms training, they don't want publicly advertised firearms training (look at the stink in Phoenix), etc.

 

Look at all the billboards for "Put your kid in a carseat" or "Buckle Up: It's the law".  Jeez man, they still have anti-smoking death billboards all over!

 

We have firearms retailers that point the muzzle of guns at anything and everything, and seasoned shooters making excuses when they violate safety rules.

 

"It's my Second Amendment right to bear arms!"  And what about the "well regulated militia" part?  "Well regulated" back then meant "trained to the highest standard".

 

We're bearing the arms we demanded.  When will we demand decent training standards that are acceptable?

 

"Thanks lady!  Here's your pistol. Here's a $175 purse to keep it in. Don't pull the trigger unless you're in danger."

 

We see how well that works...not only in this incident but incidents like these:

 

 

There have been multiple snatchings like this recently in Arizona, with some women getting dragged across the parking lot at 30+mph, so no, a purse or Maxpedition "man-purse" is an unacceptable carry method.  The first-time (or second, or third, or tenth-time) purchaser doesn't know, the clerk making the sale has no idea (usually) what works and what doesn't.  If they did, Uncle Mike's would have quit selling "universal" nylon holsters decades ago.

 

Back to the author's point, the general public...the same general public that has 9 firearms for every 10 citizens...doesn't KNOW that this carry method is foolish.  Why isn't there a general effort and consensus that safety training should be publically sponsored?

 

"Gun training should be MANDATORY!" is NOT what I wrote here.  That just brings out the "I don't need no trainin' for my rights" a$$holes.

 

But it NEEDS to be heavily encouraged!  By government AND the shooting public, if not American Society at large.

 

For well over a decade my advocacy has been that the government (state, federal...I don't care) give ANYONE who attends firearms safety training course(s) get a dollar-for-dollar tax break.

 

In the 1960s and prior, many public schools had firearms safety training and shooting sports.  Yet we now have a higher per-capita firearm ownership and less public training for youth.

 

Something needs to change.

 

We have our guns. THESE are the golden years (if you don't live in a commie state) of gun ownership.  We NEED training to MATCH that.

Yup. And a GREAT program it is!

 

And of the hundreds of people I've told about, maybe 10 have taken one so far.  Which brings us back to the original dilemma:  HOW to get training to people, instead of people to training?
