blue109
Cool. The air and space museum had a SR71 on display a few years ago and two pilots hanging out to chat. Got to poke around it a little. Such an amazing machine.
jtallen83
As a kid I had a dozen model planes hanging from my ceiling, B-17 to the Blackbird. Read everything I could get my hands on about the U-2 and the SR-71...'Merica!
DNP
Air and space here has the sr71 out front right now. Saw it last Sunday. We were at the park and just happened to be near it. Haven't been into the museum since last year.

I know we got a few plane geeks here ;) Sr71 is next Nice! Pima Air & Space has four B-52s on display, one modified to hold an X-15 mockup under the wing. Still haven't been out to see the B-36 Peacemaker. Been there 3 or 4 years now. Cool. The air and space museum had a SR71 on display a few years ago and two pilots hanging out to chat. Got to poke around it a little. Such an amazing machine. They still have the airframe on display. About every weekend they have some pilots that flew something on display and have great stories. Sisco
The Minnesota Air National Guard used to have a YF12 parked at their small aviation museum at the Minneapolis Airport. Took my son there years ago, you could walk around and actually touch it. The YF12 was a prototype fighter based on the SR71 that never got produced. It was impressive. Since then it got moved somewhere in the country to another museum. An amazing class of aircraft. Someday if things calm down internationally I would like to visit the outdoor museum of the Red Army Air Force in Moscow. Doubt that ever happens though. Doubt that ever happens though. Pima has a good collection of Soviet era aircraft also, mostly fighters. They may have a Beriev Be-12. Nope, just fighters for commie stuff: http://www.pimaair.org/visit/new-aircraft-list
blue109
got to sit inside a MIL MI-24 (HIND) attack chopper. They have one at NTC they bring out for parades and change of command for big brass. We gave the pilots rides in our BMP but the favor was not reciprocated. Back when I was a kid, we would go camping in the Black Hills and those B- 36's would go over us at about 12,000 feet. When they changed their propeller pitch, Holy Crap! What a sound! First is Smithsonian Air & Space (by a LONG shot), then the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Been there but not the Smithsonian. My understanding is we can book a special all-inclusive tour, to include meals at the restaurant and a tour of AMARC (the Boneyard). It really takes two days to fully injest the entirety. jtallen83
I've did the SAC museum in Omaha, NE several years ago( they had a Blackbird ^-^ ) and the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola last year. Both are smaller but still well worth the visit!
MikedaddyH
Did the Wright Patterson in Dayton ,that was a big museum. Space crafts were the most memorable.

mineralman55
Battleship Park in Mobile Bay has a B52 parked on display right next to the USS Alabama. Wonderful place to spend an afternoon. BTW, I did not see the "Great Planes" episode the OP spoke of. If it is a canned program, it probably came from either History Channel or A&E. One of them had a long running series "Great Planes" in the 80s. I VHS taped them all. I'll have to drag them out and watch them all over again. blue109
You can't appreciate the belly and tail gunner bubbles on those bombers until you see them in person. Screw that noise.
shepp
Mineral, this was a newer show but the name sounded familiar. Sisco
Been to Smithsonian. It is ok but crowded and you can't really get close up to the hardware. Want to see Wright Patterson, my Dad worked there for a while before Pearl Harbor.

mrmackc
Pima air and space is my one of my favorite places to spend time at. It has grown since I spent a couple of days there in the late 1980s and several rolls of 35mm film. I was doing research when our High Sky wing of the CAF was trying to restore an old Douglas B-23bomber. Unfortunately we found too much corrosion in the airframe to restore to flying condition I think it may be in the bone pile or a static display at CAF in Midland. The Castle air museum in California has a Blackbird a B-36 and a B-23. I spent a full day there. Edited August 18, 2015 by mrmackc
MikedaddyH
There is a air museum at Williams,AZ. My girls went in every plane at the place except the one hanging from the ceiling.
EngrBob
B52s, boy that takes me back. In the early 70s I was the general engineering consultant for the City of Orlando for the Orlando Jetport at McCoy. McCoy was a SAC base until it was closed and deeded to the City in 1976, but in the 1973 and 1974 timeframe it was one of the quick response bases, with a squadron of B52Ds in the Christmas tree at the end of the west runway, fueled and ready to go. At that time when in full training there were over 100 52s parked wingtip to wingtip on the west ramp. It was quite a sight. What was really interesting I handled the base takeover for the City and negotiated with Disney for storing their fireworks in the old nuclear weapon bunkers. Disney insisted that they be strengthened before they would lease them to store their fireworks.
