lmt mws accuracy

I am having horrible groups with my lmtmws 308 20 inch 1 in 11 twist barrel. I have tried 150, 168, 175 gr projectiles @ 100 yrds. I have a night force optic. Does any one have any recommended loads for this rifle.

What's horrible? Might not be ammo related.Take a good look at scope mounts. Do you shoot other 308AR's much? They are a bit different than bolt guns.

Thank you. Yes this is my 1st 308 in AR platform. It has the LMT Tactical stock. ( I normally handload for my Rem 700). I have a burris one piece mount on the LMT. My groups are not even 3 inches @ 100yds.

Walth      Is the Burris mount the one piece pepr quick detach mount?     So what you are saying is that the groups are greater than 3" at 100 yds?          Wash

Are you shooting from a table? with a rest?, sandbag? sling?or Bi-pod?. what kind of environment (Wind and light)  were you shooting in? What trigger are you using? We need pictures of rifle handguard. Scope and mount.  Did the rifle function well no fail to feed, extract or eject? Brand of Ammo, please What did the bore, brass and chamber, BCG etc. look like post range?  did you do a through post range cleaning?

Don't get excited, first range trips are often hectic. specially with a new build and new platform. Do you have a good break in plan for you and the rifle?

I had lots of problems with the QD version of that mount, the cross bolt would stretch then the QD would pop open.

I was shooting on the cement tables at Kelbleys range in Ohio where they hold the national benchrest comp. . I use a front rest and sandbag. The burris mount is a quick release; pictures enclosed. I broke the barrel in. The rifle cycles good, no fails. The brass does have a nick on the neck on all cases. None of my bolt rifles do that. I used Federal gold match 168, privy part. 175 match, Remington 150 gr lorlock.( I normally handload for my Rem 700).It is a lmt factory trigger. I always clean the rifle after the range, nothing different noted.

Walth       I have a burris pepr quick detach mount thats in my scrap pile. Im not saying its your problemo with your rifle,but it was for me...I think with the nice rifle and scope combo,and you shooting the right ammo... it could be the scope mount...was for me           Wash

The scope mount is backwards, taking the Gs of recoil from the opposite direction that it was designed for.  I wouldn't count that out of the equation, along with previous comments about that particular mount.

Turn the mount around and try it.

Walth i recently had a bad shoot day. I have a BHW 1/11 twist match barrel on my lr308 build. I shot some of the same ammo you did. I was shooting in horrible conditions plus shaking like leaf. Im going out to shoot again. It was probably just an off day like i had

I will just try another mount. I have a spuhr waiting for my Les B 308 that's been on order since Janurary just sitting on my bench, so i'll try it. Any favorite handloads for this LMT 308? I'm looking for good groups at 200yrds.

I have the Burris fixed mount, which works fine, I have heard of problems locally here with the QD Burris. After you switch that, think about other things. Did you do a break in procedure on the barrel when it was new? My current favorite for my AR10's are 39.6 grns. RL 15 behind a 175gr Sierra Match King in my 1 in 10" twist 16" barrel. Winchester primer, M118LR Lake City case. In my 1 in 11.25" twist  20" barrel rifle, I am using 41 grns. RL15 behind a 168 gr SMK BTHP, Winchester Primer, M-80 Lake City case.  Not max loads by any means, but quite accurate.

A lot of guys here like that peper mount, I couldn't make the eye relief work with my fat head. Maybe start with mounting it the correct way, and make sure everything is tightened down good.

Walth when you mount the scope again you should move it up towards the muzzle...the end of the scope should be about even with charging handle. The way it is now besides having the burris on backwards like 98 said, will not allow you to get a good cheek weld with the rifle cause the scope is hanging off the back of the rifle too much           Wash

I'm at the range tomorrow.  I will try the Spuhr and ACTAR first. If it gives me good groups, i'll place the Burris back on the correct way and to the end of the charging handle as washguy suggested. I'll update, thanks.

Kinda seems like more of a personal preference thing there? Or at least dependant on the scopes eye relief. it shouldn't matter where the scope is as long as you are consistent. 

 

Make sure the Mount is pushed all the way forward into the blocks before you crank it down though.

what I do when shooting my ARs is put my nose against the charging handle to get the same cheek weld each time... but then again I have a big nose. lol.

having the scope about even with, or slightly before or after the charging handle depending on your cheek weld should be about right for most people. before tightening it down, find what works best for you so you can get a consistent cheek weld each shot. it is about what works best for each person and what is comfortable. but I believe wash is right, the scope does look to far back. with any rifle, you want to lean into it whether you are standing or in the prone, a scope to far back means your head will be back farther which naturally moves your shoulders back. you wont be absorbing the recoil as much.
