rbril Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 I wanted to relate to you a catastrophic failure of a buffer purchased through Amazon.com, fulfilled by Tactical Military Gear and supplied by Ultimate Arms Gear. I installed a PRS MAG308 buttstock and the Ultimate Arms Gear USA Made .308/A2-Kit on my S&W M&P 10 and after 13 rounds the threaded plug blew out of the bottom of the buffer and lodged into my bolt carrier. Luckily the only damage was superficial scratches to the bolt carrier and to my wallet. I contacted Magpul and after looking at the pictures, they feel that the product was substandard and possibly not even made for the AR10. Amazon declined to replace it because it was over 30 days old. Tactical Military Gear refused a refund or replacement stating that they are a 3rd party seller, essentially a middle-man. Ultimate Arms Gear refused a refund or replacement stating that they only deal with wholesalers and business. Beware of buying buffer kits supplied by Tactical Military Gear and Ultimate Arms Gear, the quality is obviously suspect and the ability to receive a refund or replacement is nonexistent.
98Z5V Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) Ummmm.... That's usually not threaded. Post some pics of the entire buffer assembly, and include the measurement of the overall length. Edited January 11, 2017 by 98Z5V
MikedaddyH Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) I blew out three buffers in my 9mm AR ,solved it with $1.00 in Canadian quarters. Buffer was bouncing and slamming into the back of the BC. Get another buffer and put some quarters at the back of the receiver extension. Then load the spring and buffer . shepp Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 Welcome to the forum feel free to post up in the intro section and tell us about yourself the quote "you get what you pay for" comes to mind. Amazon and fleabay are two of THEE last places I'd buy gun parts from especially major shit like that. But that's just my opinion
blue109 Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 Wait...what? Why was that part threaded? Can you post a link to the item you bought? A buffer has a solid face.
DNP Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 Somebody's clever attempt at adjustable weights?
DNP Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 Something like this? Steel body with solid core? http://ultimatearmsgear.com/products/ultimate-arms-gear-pro-series-black-ar15-ar-15-m4-m16-223-5-56-heavy-4-8-oz-carbine-rifle-buffer-for-collapsible-stock
rbril Posted January 11, 2017 Author Report Posted January 11, 2017 Daniel @ Magpul told me he thought it was the wrong buffer for sure. I guess that's a given. As far as buying from Amazon, this is the first issue I've had with them and it's because the transaction was over 30 day old. Big box hardware store has the same policy.
98Z5V Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) Length on that thing, end to end, including the poly bumper on the end? Looks likfe almost 6" in one pic, but just about 5.25" in another. AR15 rifle buffer is 5.900" long; 308AR rifle buffer is 5.200" long. RRA LAR8 rifle buffers are 4.875" long. WHF , Never saw a Threaded Buffer before . Buy from named Retailers like Brownells & you would have the correct Buffer & if there was an issue, a new replacement .Free ! Inspect the End of your Receiver Extension for any damage that could of occurred , hopefully the bumper at that end absorbed any impact . Count the Coils on the srping & measure it also .
blue109 Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 Buying from Amazon isn't the issue....buying no-name gun parts through Amazon is.
survivalshop Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 Makes you wonder if that weight ( what ever its made of ) was banging around in there , like a Jack Hammer & the end being threaded , didn't stand a chance .

I guess that's what I meant, You know what I'm getting when You got to brownells for example and you got a seller with a reputation. On Amazon it maybe a crap shoot with somthing your unsure of and this is a great example.
rbril Posted January 11, 2017 Author Report Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) Shepp, absolutely correct. It's obvious that not everything is high quality and trustworthy. As the internet marketing world expands, some of us learn the hard way not everything is up to snuff. Edited January 11, 2017 by rbril

survivalshop Posted January 12, 2017 Report Posted January 12, 2017 2 hours ago, rbril said: Just over 5.27" Are you including the Bumper on the end , because it sure looks longer then that , next to that ruler . that Bumper at the end or cushion , should be included in the over all measurement .
survivalshop Posted January 12, 2017 Report Posted January 12, 2017 (edited) Photo of a Brand new AR 15/16 Rifle Buffer , 5 7/8", all one piece , except at the Disassembly pin for the Bummer at the end . Looks like they are the same size if placed correctly on the Measurement . AR 15/16 rifle length spring --12 1/2 " , 44 coils It does rattle a bit , when shook back & forth . DNP Posted January 12, 2017 Report Posted January 12, 2017 I do want to add...that buffer appears to be different than what was pictured in the original ad.
rbril Posted January 12, 2017 Author Report Posted January 12, 2017 Survivalshop, I micrometered mine so I know the measurement is pretty accurate. Thanks for the post of the real buffer. DNP, I noticed that too but didn't give much credence to it since illustrations are less accurate these days to what is sold. All buffers do matter, especially the ones that work. ;)
