A lot of different 308ARs in that price range as well. You could also get a base model of a DPMS Oracle or a Armalite Defensive sporting rifle for under $1000 and use the extra money in your budget to add custom features. An M1A is fun but is a completely different shooting experience and doesn't have the aftermarket customizing potential that a a DPMS 308AR pattern rifle would have. Personally? Screw the budget and get both. You might as well get your 308 addiction off on a proper foot.

If I were looking for a Ar10 with the old budget in mind, I would look at the PSA Second Gen PA10 Rifle.  Now, I went with a hybrid so it will use both NATO and .308 ammo but that is just me.  I have a lot of reviews about the PSA AR10 and it seems the first gen stuff had issues but it seems the second gen stuff works at least better, if not OK and they say works with Magpul mags.  I have reports of minute accuracy with their barrels.  NOT trying to shill PSA.

My money, I would still push the old APF 308 carbine. They should run about $1,100 all day long, and mine's flawless running along with very very good customer service.

Of course, I get no bennies for this, just my opinion and experience with mine.

Washguy, I went a Fulton Armory 16” Barrel, .308 Hybrid Weight, 1X10, Chrome Lined, Threaded, March Quality, Criterion with a JBEB-308 JB Enhanced Bolt Assembly and asked Fulton to match the barrel to the bolt.  They say the barrel will work both .308 and NATO spec ammo.

Yes they do , I have a 16" & a 20" from FA , mine are older , Kreiger /Criterion , but same Chambers . I had a 18" Hybrid Barrel from Criterion & it was the Contour of the Barrel that made it a Hybrid , that & it was a Nitrated ,Stainless Steel Barrel . Its a great Shooter , a friend of mine has the 18" now & loves it .

I guess it matters is what do you plan to do with it.  Baaderman1 says he wants a “.308 TO SHOOT AT THE RANGE FOR FUN.”  I hope I do not get flamed with this, but I have seen a lot of good review posts about the PSA Gen 2 guns in .308 and the go for $699.99 on sale and I might chance it.  (But looking at the Gen 1 guns, they have a LOT of issues and LOT of bad reviews.)  Now if MY life were on the line or if I were competition shooting, or if price were no object, that would be a different story.  But at the day, everything breaks anyhow.

You are correct that Gen2 PSA 308 are much better than the earlier version.  There is a PSA section to the forum that has some very thorough reviews on them.  Proprietary parts are an issue with them, as it is all across the 308 spectrum.

You can get the PSA PA10's even cheaper than that if you watch the sales and buy a complete upper and a complete lower. Then put them together. I got my upper for 399, and the lower for 179. 578 plus the 30 dollar transfer fee. So, 608 out the door. I added a set of 50 dollar scope mounts, and a free scope, and I'm in business. Mine works good, and seems to shoot decent enough. I haven't tried many brands of ammor or sizes of bullets. It's been mostly milsurp and factory 150's, because I'm a cheap bastard and can't stand spending tons of money on expensive ammo, lol.

That is a great price.  Last year, the stripped lowers were going about $250.00 alone.
