skoobie Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 Hi everyone. As the title says I'm relatively new to the gun world. Use to shoot with my dad when I was a kid but it trailed off significantly into my college years. My father recently passed and left me his gun collection so I'm getting back into the scene. Among (several) others he had an ArmaLite AR-10 that I plan on keeping. Just trying to learn more about the gun itself and its history. I can't tell if this rifle is a newer, more common version or something older/harder to find. Everything SEEMS fairly standard on the rifle from what I've been able to dig up except one thing. There seems to be a Department of Defense Eagle emblem on the front of the lower receiver? It's not terribly clear though. So any insight you guys might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
unforgiven Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 Welcome from Indiana brother , sorry to hear about your loss.
edgecrusher Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 Sorry for your loss. He left you not only his interest but a great way to remember him. Welcome from Massachusetts
skoobie Posted March 27, 2018 Author Report Posted March 27, 2018 Thank you all for the condolences. Shooting and racing were things we shared while I was growing up. I now have three girls and plan to teach them to shoot with grandpa's guns. My 13/yo is especially excited to hit the range. I need to learn how to tear down and clean everything still, but we will hit the range soon. I think dad would be happy to see us all learning together. That being said, expect many questions from myself. haha
Rsquared Posted March 30, 2018 Report Posted March 30, 2018 Welcome aboard skoobie. The Eagle rubber stamped on the front of the receiver is something that Armalite used to do to their factory built rifles/carbines (I believe). They wear off over time (from cleaning). You're going to enjoy shooting it with your kids.
jtallen83 Posted March 30, 2018 Report Posted March 30, 2018 Welcome from Iowa, via Mississippi! Armalite used the eagle stamp to differentiate between factory built rifles and rifles built from stripped receivers.

If your serial number ends in a "K" that was a stripped lower. If it doesn't have a "K" is was a factory rifle. That's the LR-308 lowers - I don't know if that's the pattern they follow on 5.56 stuff. Edited April 1, 2018 by 98Z5V

Should be in North Carolina by the end of April then Virginia by June with a goal of being in Missouri before the end of July. Punishment for being the guy that will do it without bitching. The Missouri job should be a year long so hopefully they will let me sit still a bit then.
